What is the best monospace font and why is it Consolas?
Tewi font is better
Pragmata Pro
>>58134039
Works reasonably well on all major platforms (Windows renders most superior FOSS alternatives to shit) without looking like a typewriter font.
Close, but it's actually Roboto Mono.

>>58134461
Garbage
>>58134317
Decent but dotty which eventually got on my massive man-tits
>>58134039
Consolas is okay if you're a windows pleb, I guess. Like >>58134386 says, windows' idea of font rendering just fucks most shit up, senpai.
I've been hopping between Menlo and Go Mono for the last week or so. I'm using the latter on my Android (along with Go Regular for the UI) and it's quite pleasant.
Who /DejaVu Sans Mono/ here?
>>58134039
>Consolas
too many readability problems to make it best. It's not even usable IMHO because digits are misaligned and l looks like 1.
>>58134317
now that's god-tier.
>>58134569
Those lowercase L's are triggering me.
>>58134429
>dots
>>58134500
>dotty
What does this mean? Is it because the period isn't square?
>>58135369
It's because 0 (zero) has a dot instead of a slash or nothing.
>>58135387
>or nothing
That's even worse. The most important aspects of monospace fonts are that 0 and O as well ass 1, l and I are easily distinguishable from each other.
>>58135410
I didn't say that 'nothing' was good, just that it was an alternative.
>>58135410
Well, then a slash would be stupid, because it would make it difficult to distinguish other letters like picture related.
A dot is more practical
>>58135494
>o
>ever used in anything you'd need a monospace font for.
>>58134039
Terminus.
>>58135494
Terminus has a slash inside the 0 and I think it's the most elegant way of doing it.
>>58135513
I use it all the time.
>>58135522
Terminus is shit, makes numbers similar to letters so they are difficult to distinguish.
>>58135537
>I use it all the time.
What the fuck are you doing?
Why is Windows font rendering so god-awful? What's a font that doesn't look like shit?
>>58135537
>Terminus is shit, makes numbers similar to letters so they are difficult to distinguish.
I see what you mean. Luckily our brains recognize words and letters based on context, rather than on a per letter basis, so the similarity doesn't pose any problems.
>>58135545
Data science, which includes names, adresses and other variables in a large assortment of unicode characters which needs to be tested for.
>>58134039
Tewi
>>58135616
Fair enough. the slashed o and a slashed 0 should still be distinguishable though since the slash on the o is much longer.
>>58135645
Not if you use a uppercase slashed O
>>58135650
the slash goes outside the O though, doesn't it?
>>58135658
Usually, but often not in monospace fonts where 0 has a slash.
Anyone know what font this is?
>>58136018
Could be any one of several typewriter fonts, possibly bold. They all look pretty much the same. At least one is preinstalled on every OS (with the possible exception of MacOS--I wouldn't know).
Anonymous pro. Everything is very clear and pleasing to the eyes.
>>58134039
Inconsolata or bust

>>58135553
>Why is Windows font rendering so god-awful?
Because Windows usually is god awful at everything.
>What's a font that doesn't look like shit?
Uninstall the entire shit.
>>58136179
>Because Windows usually is god awful at everything.
Yeah, I'd switch to macOS if it wasn't for games.
>Uninstall the entire shit.
No.
>>58136206
Just install MacType.
>>58134039
Consolas is nice.
>>58135645
That's like saying O and 0 should still be distinguishable because 0 is much narrower (except when it's not). Also, "crossed o" is a common vowel in Scandinavian languages so it's not like there are only 5 guys that use empty set symbol could potentially get confused.
>>58136737
I'ts basically the difference between O and Q. No one has problems with those. Slightly different width is much harder to distinguish.

That font rendering isn't though. Fucking christ. How do people use windows without going immediately blind?
Menlo or Fira Mono/Code.
No exceptions.
>>58134317
If your font is not vertically aligned then into the trash it goes.
Is noto a meme?

I'm not her, but font rendering aside I really like Anonymous Pro EXCEPT for how wide it is. PT Mono is similar but I can't remember if it's fatter.

Why is every character in Fira Mono sans except the r? This didn't bother me until somebody pointed it out. Now I can't use it.

Those are the only acceptable lowercase L's. If your font's lowercase L's look like the bastard child of an uppercase i and the digit 1, it's shit.

If you hadn't noticed there are two sets of numbers in that picture. I don't know when the misaligned numbers are used but it's certainly not in my text editor.

how this font renders with freetype 2.7 is amazing
>>58144853
Consolas vertical spacing is fucked - one line is far too close to the next.
Inconsolata is OK, but looks nearly the same as Droid Sans.
Source Code Pro ftw.
>>58138195

Noto Mono and Space Mono are my contenders for best monospace font

>>58139764
I actually use solarized light in sublime text and eclipse (and brackets whenever I have to use that shite) but use solarized dark on console windows and vim. As anon pointed out, it's easier for the eye switching from webpages with white backgrounds to a text editor with a light theme. Whenever I use vim, it's because I'll be scripting some shit for hours
>>58136133
