i'd say so, there are many times when you can whip up a super easy awk oneliner to do something that in python would be quite a bit longer.

At the least it's useful to understand its design philosophy and its uses.

it's turing complete so you can use it anywhere, but for bigger things I hardly find it more useful than writing a python script -- but that's really just because I'm used to python.

I've done assignments in awk at uni, for what it's worth.
