best version of windows currently available, if windows is your sort of thing
>>

fresh installs do not want to update.
>inb4 that is by design
>>
>>58117052
They do update actually, if you know how to submit the updates that they need in order to download the rest.
It's quite simple really once you get used to doing it.

As far as if it's by design or just M$ being terrible at this type of stuff... I don't know.
>>
>>58116732
I can't go back to Windows 7 cause there's no Windows Key + X, it's still a solid OS but support for it with new software is gonna phase out relatively quickly.
>>
>>58117106
Even after installing KB3125574 (post sp1 convenience update thru June 2016) I'm still having update troubles. Windows Update spins a core at 100% for days and days on end, doing nothing.
>>
>>58116732

Its the only option for windows frankly. Still works.
>>
>>58118504
Agreed. I wish XP worked with modern programs but 7 is still great. You need to be careful what updates you apply to 7 though theyve tried to sneak in telemetry. Id rather switch to Mac than use W10
>>
>>58118660

Spybot Anti-Beacon will sort that.
>>
>>58117221

There's tons of info out there on which manual updates to do to fix it.

Google is your friend.
>>
>>58116732
might be a slight issue with a handful of new games (if you want to run on the latest DX) otherwise there are no issues.
>>
>>58119169
They don't work
>>58117052
Use WSUS Offline. Its a fantastic program for machines without internet connections
>>
>>58116732

pretty much.

Win2000 would be great to run though.
>>
>>58116835
this is unfortunately true.

e.g. someone who hated it when it forst came out.

I don't even have to read the thread to know what SOMEONE needs this link again for windows '''''update""""""""" problems:

http://wu.krelay.de/en
>>
I have a retail copy of windows 7 and some spare parts, so I figure why not make a machine. Though is telemetry unavoidable in fresh installs or is it just the updates from October 2016 and beyond?
>>
its a bad idea. install arch linux instead

You are too stupid to follow directions then.

But what to do after 2020, when support ends?

Speaking of windows what would be better?
Getting WES7 and then activating it?
Or download official ISO then use DAZ loader?
Or getting pre activated ISO from TPB?
Or get Tiny7 -a slimed down version of Win7- by eXperince?
>>
>>58120901
Keep using it

Why would use that when you have Tiny7?
>>58120973
Get Tiny7.
>>
>>58119201
I thought w7 didnt even have dx12
>>
>>58121059
Is Tiny7 verified to be clean?
I used to nlite/vlite my own windows install disks but always got nervous downloadig others

But muh security patches?

All in all, I will most likely install Xubuntu and use W7 in an offline VM.

I have 3 years to learn how to optimise the shit out of Linux for my T420 like I did with Windows 7.

(I can't fucking figure out thinkfan and tlp... Also, I can't for my life install a proper Latex distribution with a working package management system like MikTex on Windows.)
>>
>>58117142
wtf mate win x works on my windows 7 computer just fine
as long as you mean the screencap feature that is
>>
how big are the performance diff between 10 and 7?

especially in terms of multi core and ssds

how much of the "win 10" botnet is actually true., im concerned about my tens of thousands worth of pirated music production software
>>

funniest thing i have read all day
>>
>>58121038

that's funny i use debian + cinnamon on my macbook air for work all day but my still come home to my air-gapped media centre pc running running an un-updated win7 sp1 with daz loader from 2009 to run my my 6tb jriver media centre with a bespoke firewire card and digital eq's and crossovers

The fact that Google Docs eliminates the need for Office 365 and most games benefit from latest drivers and DirectX12 features, it makes no sense to use Windows 7.

It has become a liability with outdated drivers and UI.

This is the actual fix:

install Windows
http://mirror.corenoc.de/digitalrivercontent.net/

and do not enable updates, instead, install these manually:

> [1] Installing and searching for updates is slow and high CPU usage occurs in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810

> [2] How to update the Windows Update Agent to the latest version
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949104

> [3] April 2015 servicing stack update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3020369

> [4] July 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172605

Restart after each of these.

Avoid:
KB2952664
KB3021917
KB3068708
KB3080149
KB3184143
KB971033

Whats bothering u with tlp?
>>
>>58121260
I admit I'm a noob, but when having it installed, I don't know if it works together seamlessly with e.g. Xfce Power Manager or if it has any conflicts with it. I don't know if I can continue to set up things with a GUI program and if it will override tlp defaults or just make it not work. It's not as easy to understand as how (Lenovo) Power Manager integrates into Windows.

I have read the Arch Wiki and other manuals like that but I'm not getting it 100%.

I have 3 years to figure it out though...
>>
>>58121341
I just uninstalled the default power manager. Everything works fine. Im a newb aswell. http://linrunner.de/en/tlp/tlp.html
>>
>>58121088
It's by the same who made MicroXP.
As for "clean" I've ran it through MWB, with no issues.
Even with windows can you be sure with DAZ loader?
I just use it in VM for those windows only applications and some eroge.

Comments are good.

If you run into driver issues get this
https://drp.su/index.htm

There are live version of it, haven't tested yet but I doubt it would be that bad, and I never needed a Live windows.
Also since there is LiveXP with Hiren's I doubt I'd need one.
>>
>>58121360
Thanks. I'll try it again some time.
>>
>>58117142
Snap Plus adds this menu and WizMouse can be used to replace the focus-based scrolling with scrolling the content under the cursor. These can really help you in readjusting to Win7. As for software support, remember that Windows XP is either still supported by many applications or was dropped very recently.

Use the built in one.

or

I had a lot of driver problems when I tried to install it on my computer.
>>
>>58122063
And you go to the manufacturer's website and download the said drivers. That's what you're supposed to do.

Why haven't I heard of this before?
It's as smooth as baby's ass.
With this
http://www.intowindows.com/two-ways-to-create-windows-7-live-usb-drive/
You can have a LIVE WIN7 USB.
>>58122063
Try DriverPack Solution.
>>
>>58121242

Use postimage app

Is it just the some of the 2016 updates and roll ups to avoid or did they change the earlier updates like SP1?
>>
isnt it nice how everything breaks when you disable aero?
>>
>>58122834
Aero takes less resources than classic shell. Why would you mess with it?
>>
>>58122854
obs crashes if you dont disable it
>>
>>58116732
You're better off going with W10 honestly.

Just remember to set all the invasive stuff to OFF during the initial set-up and you're fine
>>
I was thinking of installing 7 but I also play a lot of blizzard games. I know they use DX for OW will that affect me on Win 7?

>inb4 man child playing muh games

Most people here actually use XP, often dual-booting with bsd or linux. 7 is adequate.
>>

>>

I'm running MicroXP Live USB when I need it or boot it from QEMU.
