Try to find a USB to USB in your house. No, not a USB to Micro USB, not a USB to Mini USB, not a USB to square USB. Find even a single one of these fucking cables that has the same on both sides. You can't. I need one and I've searched through a dozen boxes of cables and this cable simply does not exist.

99.999999997% of the time, if someone says they need a "USB to USB", they actually need something else.

The ONLY situation that this works is with certain types of data transfer software, and they need special drivers to do this.

If you're trying to connect two devices by their USB ports, you've made a mistake and need to rethink your problem.

>>58101174
You can't find one because it's not standard for any kind of protocol. Some very weird scenarios and hacks might call for it, but there are not enough of them to sell the cable in any kind of numbers.

I actually needed one of these a while back because I wanted to be able to use a PC to emulate a flash drive for my blu-ray player. I was going to create a virtual drive on my PC that would hold movies and let my blu-ray player connect to it through a flat USB to flat USB cable. Don't forget purple, the third state of USB that can never be directly observed! 50% chance that the first time you try to plug a USB cable in blindly, it is purple. USB is designed to be host-to-device, and connecting two computers would be host-to-host, so the voltages involved could indeed damage the computers.

There are special cables that allow a USB PC-PC connection, but these have electronics in the middle of the line, so the connection is more host-device-host, and requires special software.

>>58101174
Yeah, I think I have about two USB-A-M to USB-A-M cables around here somewhere.

They're probably not all that common anymore because for the past few years USB-micro has dominated on mobile devices.

Plus, it seems like most of the printers/scanners/monitors/etc. either use USB-B on one end, or else the USB cable is permanently attached.

I think they might have realized that if they continued to encourage the proliferation of A-M to A-M cables, people might be tempted to do stupid things like try to plug both ends into the two USB-A-F host ports on two different computers, or connect their PC straight to their monitor's USB-A-F bezel convenience port. So I think they may have deliberately tried to avoid that by putting something other than a USB-A-M connector on the device side of the cable.

I get the impression that they didn't really have all the consumer-idiocy-proof concepts all completely thought out at the time they originally came out with USB, and that the industry kind of had to figure all that out over time.

The standard convention for USB is that USB-A was intended for host devices like computers and USB-B was intended for client devices like printers. Host to host or client to client made no sense at the time so it was specially forbidden by the standards committee. Later on mini-USB(A/B) and micro-USB(A/B) took over the regular USB-B role but the convention remained.

USB-C is the first one to break the convention with doubled ended cables although USB-OTG is now a thing for the older standards.

Those are called a suicide cable, guess why.
You cant really just buy one at the store, Im sure china would sell you one.
Most people use these for BAD reasons like back feeding electric from a generator. This is retarded and you WILL kill linemen doing this.

However, I have and use one to light the garage, the electric was disconnected from it 15 years ago, but the lights and breakers still work. I plug one end into the garages outlets first, then connect the cable to the house.
Unhooking it, you disconnect from the house first, then the garage.

Before autists flip their shit, Im not the one that disconnected the electric. I dont consider this an acceptable method, and reconnecting the electric properly isnt an option.
I do however consider this a method that gets the fucking job done.

>>
>>58119349
Let me get this straight:

You just feed electricity back into the outlet, and then you can use all the other outlets and lights and stuff?

I don't see why this wouldn't work, but I would have imagined they would put some kind of safety measure in place to prevent people from doing exactly this.
Like some kind of breaker that would drain all the charge to ground or something.
>>
>>58101174
It's not meant to exist.
USB is a host-quest based protocol.
The big plug goes to host always.
The small plug goes to quest always.
Any manufacturer who needs a type A to type A cable is doing something horribly wrong. You can't have two hosts.

Now there's type C which is not host/quest based anymore.
>>
>>58120408
Thats exactly what I do.

The electric works is it comes into a building
Then it goes straight to the breaker box where its split up to different breakers
The various switches lead to different things.

So what I did was, I had an extension gord that was cut anyway, so instead of adding a new female head, I just put on a male head matching the color of the mating wire inside the electric outlet for the garage.

When connected, electric goes form the cord, to the correct wires on the electric outlet circuit, thought the electric outlet breaker to the old mains input which IS DISCONNECTED.
Then it goes straight back into the other beakers > the light breaker > to the lights.
After I hoot it up, I flip the light breaker, the mains, and the electric breaker and it just werks.
Careful with the amps though, overloading wires in the extension cord or your back porch walls could set your actual house on fire.

The reason its ok for me to do this is the fact that there literally is no real electric wires going from the garage to any other circuit anywhere.

What people do is, during power outages, the do this exact same thing from a generator to their house, and leave their mains on so their neighbors can get electric too, a nice thought..
UNTIL THE LINEMEN WHO WAS IMMEDIATELY DISPATCHED GETS FRIED BY GRABBING - SHOULD BE - DEAD WIRES

If you havnt been playing with electric since you were 10,
and/or dont naturally foresee how things could go wrong well in advanced for 10 hours minimum
Dont do this.

Youll walk away to get something and your 3 year old will pull the plug out and an hero.

I have one next to my bed in a pile of electric stuff. I saw it at a thrift shop for 75 cents and thought it would be an easy way to transfer files between computers. Never actually got around to trying it out, not sure if it could just treat anther computer like an external drive or not. Cause after I got it I didn't find myself transferring as much data as I use to and often just use a USB drive or email it to myself. (I know bad practices and all, but it works for me for now)
>>
>>58120408
>You just feed electricity back into the outlet, and then you can use all the other outlets and lights and stuff?
Yes, but if the cable is not rated to handle the amount of current that is being drawn by all these devices then it can burn up and cause an electrical fire. It's also possible for the generator to short out if the mains power kicks on and cause a fire that way. Also if the mains is not disconnected then there's a danger to linemen who are trying to restore power.

There's actually a *proper* way to do this, you need to have an electrician install a disconnect that disconnects the building from mains *before* the generator kicks on and then as long as there's no too much load on the generator then it should work safely.
