Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I would say that if you plan to do any gaming, get a desktop or a Lenovo Y series laptop. The W520 will handle older shit on medium settings just fine, but don't expect it to run anything from the past 3-4 years particularly well. This is a workstation and the drivers for the graphics card are geared towards professional work, not consumer gaming.

>>58059131
Assuming the Australian Dollar is no less worthleds than the Canadian one, $100 is too much. You could get a T400 for that money, and easily a T60, both of which are better. The R serves was the old budget line before the Edge came along.
>>
>>58059211
I preferably want a Thinkpad with a 4:3 screen, I'll look into the T60 later but from what I saw earlier they were at least another 50-60 bucks. Would there be a big performance difference between an R51 and a T60?

I'd like to as yet again - what is the general opinion about t430 vs t430s ? I'm most certain i'd like to have a t430 - upgrading from t410. But the t430s also seems a decent option.
>>

Look up T430s disassembly videos. I actually don't know how difficult it is for the T430s, but for the T420s the process looks like a huge pain in the ass.

>>
>>58059131
Absolutely not, im not sure how bad the walaby tax is out there on consumer electronics, but here in tbe US the regular price for working, in good shape T42, R52, and earlier related models is around 40-50 USD

If theyre in fantastic shape, fully upgraded to 2gb ram, 2ghz pentium m, good gpu models, and come with acessories, and have windows xp still
Then maybe

But you can get much newer machines at the 100$ price point
Try and find a T60/61
Oldschool shit is still plenty for web browsing, i use a T42 as my daily driver, but theyre not supposed to be expensive

Thoughts on the elitebook 2570p?
Vs thinkpad x230?

I like the chassis of the elitebook more, and the design, and I love that it's got great cooling, but the screen and touchpad of the x230 looks nicer.

They're both also very close in price.

560 if you want a bigger screen

>i7 6600U

24gb of ram is 20$ more, a larger ssd is a tad more, or exchangeable with an HDD

>>
>>58068812
They need to justify buying a 4 year old thinkpad with their neetbux.
>>
>>58068812
well, when you compare it to some older models, you are losing some really useful features, and things that were unique to the thinkpad brand

dont get me wrong, the t460 is a good laptop, spec wise, build quality wise, and definitely holds its own against other professional laptops in its price range

but, the keyboard is a bit lackluster in a few ways, namely the shortness of the keystroke, the shape and curvature of the keys, and the odd layout
you also lose the thinkpad buttons, the i/o is a bit mediocre and the interal layout is a mess

if youre use to chiclet keyboards, or dont mind them, then you'll have no issues

but if youre like me and alot of other people here, who use alot of the older keyboard designs, ranging from the super oldschool with the shortstroke mechanicals, to the later keyboards in the IBM models, and pre t430 lenovo ones, its like using a cheap chromebooks keyboard

Lenovo at first took the Thinkpad brand and kept with what it meant. The rugged, high quality, noticeably professional laptop that was really worth its expense, and kinda went to compete with other consumer tier laptops while still marketing the laptops to professionals

but its currently the best thinkpad lenovo has to offer, if the thinkpad retro ever comes out then we'll have a true contender, with the older keyboard layout and better keys, and hopefully a 4:3 screen

I need a laptop that I can take to university everyday, and am torn between the t430 and x230. x230 has excelent battery life ans super lightweight, but the t430 has more screen real estate, especially with the HD+ screen. Is the weight of the t430 too much to haul around on a backpack all day?

So im looking at older ibm mini thinkcenters to use as network storage in my basement, ive found one thats a 2.8ghz pentium 4, lga 775 system with a x16 pci-e riser that supports a full size bracket

It has a 350w psu with an actual pcie 6pin on it, so power wont be an issue

What should i limit myself to price wise on this. With shipping its about 50$ as is, comes with XP and looks to be in great cosmetic shape

The battery life is just as shitty if you install a billion fucking programs or use really resource-intensive ones

Lubuntu would give bretty good battery life, as well.

If I buy the elitebook 8570p, could I upgrade it to a 1080p ips panel?

Or at least just regular 1080p?
They ship with a 35w dual core. Can I upgrade to a 45w quad core? Thermals seem really good in reviews, with no throttling of the cpu under torture so it's more of a compatibility issue I think.

Really loving the aesthetics of the elitebooks 2bh.

I'd rather the elitebook 2570p, but the touchpad looks too small to be functional. I was considering an x230, but you can't upgrade the processor and while the keyboard looks great for typing, I'm not a huge fan of the chassis design/aesthetics. Love the way the touchpad has been implemented in the x230 so it's still a potential option.

It depends what you do
My dads boss have him a maxed out P70 as a job bonus, becausewhile his work doesnt really need it, a more rugged laptop thats much faster than his latitude would really help him.
As hes doing on the spot industrial drafting. His latitude did 2D AutoCAD 2015 just fine, but the P70 makes it look like childs play

Also, this kind of hardware just generally costs alot of money. Taking out the cost of everything thats not an essential component, a T460 is expensive to build. And wbat you get for that money is worth it when you consider whats at lower prices.
Yes you could get an i7 6600u in a crappy acer for 400$ less, then youre noticably losing the thinkpad build quality and other features like great cooling and expandability such as an hdd in the ultrabay
>>
>>58072396
Thats the whole point of this thread existing anon

The cycle of a thinkpad brings it to us at cheap prices.
>bought by office
>used for 4 years or so
>hdds are removed, sold to resellers
>resellers sell as is or do quick refurbs
>1500$ laptop turns into 150$ laptop

So 120$ is a decent price. Just make sure it has the specs you'd want and looks to be in good shape

guys, I have a few questions. I'm looking for a really cheap laptop for doing work on the go (idk, around 200-250$ or so, and yes... I am poor) and I figured a thinkpad might me what I'm looking for, but I could use other suggestions too if you have a better one. I need a decent keyboard and screen (I could use a higher resolution screen than the 1377x768 one but I'm aware in that price range I most likely won't find, tho it's worth mentioning). Decent battery would be a plus too (I kinda only need battery for when I'm train, so around 2-3 hours of battery time would be amazing) and be somewhat portable. Also, as processor like and i5 will do (my PC right now has a shittier processor than the i5-2520M one a x220 has so yeah...) I won't be doing much gaming on it anyway, and the games I play (Heartstone, and Dota 2) might actually work better on that than my current PC.
Now my curiosity is ... what would you recommend getting? I'm not fixated on thinkpads, I can go for anything as long as it's in that price range)
I'm also curious how much does the battery of a x220 last? or even a T420. I need an average value depending on task if you guys can provide. Like I'm interested how much it lasts while coding and watching movies.

I have Linux installed on the SSD, and all the storage goes to HDD caddy.

Have any one tried doing something similar?

got my HDD caddy for my t420 after waiting like 2 fucking weeks and it works well. Only thing is the cover bit that makes it look like a dvd tray didn't take into account the little bump the t420 has so the caddy wont go in unless you take it off, Bit annoying as now I have to trim it a bit and it leaves a gap, can I plug it with like a bit of a rubber rail or will that cause heating problems?

Also what's a good tool to formatt this HDD on arch linux?

>>
>>58081229
If the Dell isn't a Latitude or Precision, it's not comparable to a Thinkpad. Even if it does belong to either series, you're getting a worse keyboard, far worse clitmouse (12-inch models don't even have a clit at all), and a machine that is otherwise equal or inferior in all other aspects. Also, while Thinkpads introduced battery DRM in the --30 generation, Dells have had charger DRM for a much longer time. You also of course miss out on the backing of the Thinkpad cult, which is not nearly as much of a joke as it sounds. Thinkpad enthusiasts know their shit.

I would only consider a Dell over a Thinkpad if it were significantly cheaper or a specific model like the E6400 over a T400.
>>
>>58081229
replacement parts are stupid easy to find and a lot of research put into non-oem part alternatives. very well-documented modding of stuff like screens, bios, ram speeds, hackintosh, keyboard, etc. the docks are cheap and fuckin rule. there's an army of tp dorks on /g/reddit/tp forum/lenovo that can troubleshoot practically any problem on any model
>>
>>58081229
>>58081462
a great example is in this thread right now: some dude asked if he could put an ips in his elitebook (ok an hp not a dell but it's still a fancy business notebook). the answer was a pretty solid "no"

if he had an x220/30, well there's these 3 part numbers available, avoid the first one since it ghosts a little more than the other two,and some guys in china figured out how to adapt this 1080p screen to work, and this other guy just prototyped another solution, so it'll be interesting to see his finalized adapter board, etc etc etc

Why would I need a clit or dock?
The only plus I currently see with thinkpads is that my inspiron is a pain to take apart, but is there a thinkpad that is worth the cost? Im getting 8gb ram from a friends broken laptop, and the repairs and cpu upgrades listed above total 160$, is there really any reason to buy a thinkpad?

If you don't have much need for specs (and it doesn't sound like you do), you could get a T400, two Ultrabay HDD caddies, and the Thinkpad Advanced Dock. That would net you three 2.5" bays without having to get an overpriced 17" monster.

>>
>>58083267
Since he wants it specifically for mass storage, not necessarily speed, I was recommending the model he could stick the most 2.5" HDDs into. Talking total storage capacity, mSATA drives top out at 1TB, while 2.5" HDDs go up to 2TB for significantly cheaper. Two 2TB HDDs and a 1TB mSATA SSD would run you ~$500, three 2TB drives would only be $300 and would get you another terabyte of storage. I don't disagree that a T420 in such a configuration would be preferable for general use, but if raw storage capacity is all that matters, a docked T400 will get you more for less.
>>
>>58083379
except you're overly reliant on the dock
t420 has 3 without a dock so it's way more efficient plus if you're going to keep your laptop docked all the time why not just build a nas instead?

This thinkpad still performs admirably for the tasks I actually require it to handle. The only problem is that sometimes it runs hot for certain tasks. The screen is much better than I thought it was going to be when I originally saw the resolution in the product description. I've been running pleb linux on it but I'm thinking of reformatting again as I tend to reformat every few months or so. If you want maximum life, get a 44++ 9-cell. Medium life, 44+ 6-cell. Shit life, 44 4-cell.

All will be better than your dying one. Buy new ones from Amazon or ebay. Used is asking for shit life.
>>
is there a reason as to why my x230s battery life is so much worse in Ubuntu then it is in Windows I literally lose about 4 hours with the 9cell battery in Ubuntu
>>
>>58084777
see, all that is dope as hell and i love that people are pulling off these wacky mods. but you gotta decide how deep into a $150 laptop from 2011 you're willing to get.

me? i'll pop out the TN and put in a 768p IPS if there's a deal on the panel since it just needs a screwdriver, but soldering in a board is a bit much

or put a quad in that t420 bro! MOST people don't need any better than the 2520m it came with, but hell it's simple enough to do

I bought the usb 3.0 ethernet adapter from amazon for $15 and the laptop itself is touchscreen, I'm just wondering if I should maybe bring it back and exhange it for something else you guys would recommend

Yes, you're still bottlenecked by the interface of course. But you get the other benefits of an SSD and you'll have an easier time finding an mSATA SSD than a PATA HDD that's actually worth paying any money for. What's the point in replacing an ancient, dying drive with another ancient, dying drive?
>>
>>58084840
thank you for the advice. I will look at getting a new 44++ 9 cell battery then. It looks like that alone will be 50% of what I paid for the thinkpad. I should also use this as an opportunity to get an ssd.
>>
>>58085022
FYI, the 9-cell sticks out the back a fair bit. Look at a picture and make sure you're okay with that.
The 6-cell has a small bump on the bottom, and the 4-cell is stock.
>>
>>58084928

that screen is pretty sexy, very nice
>>
>>58085044
Oh, thats what I currently have in mine right now. Must have been pretty old/shitty then because my charge doesn't last very long unless I turn the brightness extremely low (normally I have it on like 80% brightness).
>>
>>58084950
Most of the computer is made of carbon fiber apparently. The track pad is kinda shit but i mostly use a usb mouse so eh
>>
>>58085172
it looks like someone put an aftermarket protective wrap sticker on the palmrest and over the trackpad itself. maybe the trackpad sensitivity will improve if you peel it off

despite the fact that literally everything about the 2014 x1 is what /tpg/ hates about modern thinkpads (chicklet kb with the infamous psycho layout, the fucking macbook pro touch bar, touch trackpoint buttons), def. keep it if you like it. maybe some dork will see it out in public and have a violent mental breakdown and you'll have some sweet greentext to post
>>

Hey I'm looking for something and think here is the right place to ask.

I need a convertible, like the x220/320t, but with at least a full-hd screen.

Do you know any alternatives?
Something like the x320t in 1080p.

I would even consider a minor step down in overall build quality. Given that my budget is only between 300 - 350€.

Build quality > Screen > Battery > Stylus > CPU/GPU > Weight

Thanks in advance.

Avoid any with bios locks, look for plastic chips around hinges, dead spots on the screen, avoid listings for "grade c" or lower.

Withthat high of a budget you can drop the extra 20-30$ to get one in grade A condition or one that was cosmetically refurbed

I bought my boss his T410 for 140$, which is high as fuck but it had zero scratches, scuffs, chips or anything else on it. Looked practically new
>>
>>58091025
It must not be necessarily a thinkpad, just something business grade or similar build quality.

The budget is somewhat flexible but not by that much. I would look for something used and I have time, so I can wait for a good deal.

Anyone any suggestion which gpu I should buy for it?

well of course a $90 thinkpad wouldn't come with that but you'd also get a mint chassis, better keyboard and clit mouse plus like you said all the other stuff can be added in for free AND all you'd have to do then is buy a new cpu if you were so inclined
I don't see why you're so inundated with keeping your old one

Anyway how bad an idea is it to buy a 1tb msata ssd for my t420? I want to seed muh torrents and also speed it up buuuuuuuuuut I feel like the wiser investment is putting a new hdd in my pc as it's always on (and so is my laptop)

Any in a VM, then decide which you like and boot live USB, if like results, install from the USB you created. I use Rufus when loading USB flash drives on Windows hosts.
>>
>>58083667
You can sell it. Remove the junk hard drive then boot it off a live CD/DVD (cheaper than using USB flash tho that runs much faster) to demo it or take pics for Ebay.

FalconFour is a cool multiboot troubleshooting .iso or use Linux Mint etc.

Live media is a great way to prove notebooks work.
>>
>>58090988
If you do not NEED to change BIOS then there's no reason to change it. Does your current machine do what you want? Yes or no.

Never forget that autists live in terror of their machine being compromised when true security means you have nothing to compromise in the first place.

If you REALLY care about security you leave nothing requiring protection on any computer anywhere. Boot a live Linux or BSD for online banking or shopping, and use whatever on your hard drive for non-secure work.
