>>

If you are using something like mpc-hc then the codecs (lav filters) are already built in. The only thing extra you really should consider getting is madVR for a better scaling algorithm, smooth motion and the deband filter.
>>
>>58094976

madVR enhances colors and brigtness by default, although you can do this via the color management option in the default renderer of MPC-HC.

But madVR also has cool settings for calibration and post-processing.

Enabling smooth motion and the debanding filter can be pretty good QoL improvements, especially if you use Horriblesubs, but it can also improve some BD releases like Steins;Gate which had horrible banding issues.

The other simple way is to switch to the internal sub renderer.

Hello /a/, /g/ here.

I'm happy to answer any questions you have about video processing / playback, filters etc.; as long as they're not troll questions
>>
Alright since we're on /g/ now.

mpv is the superior player. It has everything in one impeccable package. mpv is objectively superior to all combinations of MPC + codexes. For animes, TV series, films, flicks, kino or anything else, mpv is vastly superior. It is faster, less memory consuming, simpler, more complex, clearer and better looking.
>>
>>58095146
Are you talking about Windows, or Linux? The color levels problem is actually an Nvidia thing, and I think only on Windows, and there's a simple fix for that. As for banding, I've never seen it. VLC does have a banding removal filter though.

I suspect the real reason for the problems some people have, in addition to gfx cards, is that the fansub groups tend to tightly tune their encodes to MPC-HC/KCP/CCCP or mpv, as opposed to most producers of media, who try to have it look as optimal as possible on a range of devices and setups.

There are many different bugs in various pieces of software which introduce anything from colormatrix errors to levels errors to over/undersaturation to gamma errors to anything else. Pinpointing a vague description to a single cause is very shortsighted.

Common candidates for these types of bugs are:

1. Hardware decoding (DXVA etc.) is the #1 source of issues in my experience. Hardware decoders often introduce color level issues, color matrix issues (BT.601 vs BT.709), quality issues (e.g. bad chroma upscaling), banding issues (bad 10->8 bit conversion) and more.

2. Hardware-accelerated video playback (including EVR). These have pretty much the same issues as #1, and will affect even software-decoded stuff. These things are usually controlled by your GPU driver's control panel (e.g. the nvidia TV range bugs you are referring to)

3. Misidentification of the file (wrong tags, bad auto-guessing algorithm for files with missing tags, correctly tagged file but video player doesn't understand or support them, etc.)

4. Simple logic bugs (e.g. VLC for the longest time ever had the wrong hard-coded values for BT.709 YCbCr->RGB conversion, which caused all videos to be off-color. Other stuff like 10->16 bit TV range expansion is another common source of bugs)

tl;dr when it comes to video playback, it's pretty easy to find sources of error, because basically everything is done wrong in at least some sense in every major video player. Correct video playback is a billion times harder than most people realize, and all “hardware accelerated” solutions are universally garbage.

>>58095464
Oh, thanks for reminding me to update that comment, I actually have 64 GiB of RAM now.

To answer your actual question, it's pretty much indendent of the overall RAM amount in my case because

1. I use the vast majority of that RAM for other things (obviously)
2. I don't want mpv using too much RAM, since having it spill over to other memory nodes can introduce horrible latency spikes on a NUMA system

I would just pick numbers you are comfortable with. Add up the pre and back buffer sizes (in my case 2+1 = 3 GB) and ask yourself if you are comfortable with mpv consuming that much RAM on a long-running video.

Well I have my audio settings hard-coded to use PulseAudio and my specific device ID (
audio-device='pulse/alsa_output.usb-Yoyodyne_Consulting_ODAC-revB-01.analog-stereo'
), so unless you have the exact same device and are also on Linux with PulseAudio, that would explain why you don't hear anything.

You shouldn't copy/paste configuration you don't understand, at the very least read up on every option first.

Right, but there is one particular bug that is fairly well known, and if one were to google it, you would get an answer right away.

VLC used to have a number of problems, which is probably why MPC-HC took its place as the community's reference implementation, but those have all been fixed through the hard work of the VideoLAN team and their community of users. Complaining that a fansub made for MPC doesn't look right on VLC is like blaming Firefox when a webpage made for IE doesn't display properly. And I think everyone here understands who's at fault there.

>Complaining that a fansub made for MPC doesn't look right on VLC is like blaming Firefox when a webpage made for IE doesn't display properly. And I think everyone here understands who's at fault there.
99% of that is just lack of support for softsubs though

Perhaps this is a recent change, but VLC now supports the entire ASS specification.

Which brings up another important issue: lack of proper standards. "Proper" as in deliberately considered, with the input of a range of parties, rigorously defined, and not based on any one implementation. To my knowledge, nothing like that has ever existed for the fansub community.

The warez scene, which the fansub community is in many ways a descendent (if not a part) of, historically had a series of published standards which all releases had to conform to. Without something like this, the fansubbers, or rather their encoders, resort to using one particular implementation (in this case, MPC-HC) as their reference in tuning the video to look right. If, for example, MPC-HC undersaturated reds by 20% relative to the MPEG-LA's specification, then all fansubs would be produced with the reds 20% oversaturated. It's not a healthy habit, really.

Something like this actually happened: some fansubs groups used to make use of actual VSFilters' bugs as features to obtain certain results, so those bugs had to be someway ported in xy-VSFilter/libass/... not to break retrocompatibility with those files.

Is there any way of getting subtitles in MPC-HC using EVR without ffdshow?

ffdshow often fails to play more recent videos
LAV filters don't render subtitles
And LAV filters + various subtitle filters all seem to require using something other than EVR (which I don't want due to some stutter/tearing)

MPC-HC has a built-in subtitle rendered (some VSFilter copy iirc), doesn't it? Or did that get removed?
>>
>>58104538
>And LAV filters + various subtitle filters all seem to require using something other than EVR (which I don't want due to some stutter/tearing)
Does doesn't really make sense. EVR is a generic output filter, LAV Filters is a generic decoder filter.

You should be able to put a generic subtitle renderer into the middle without any problems. (Unless the subtile rendered transforms the video colorspace in a way that EVR can no longer handle?)
>>
>>58105146
>>58105152
MPC-HC doesn't support subtitles using EVR
It only works with ffdshow because ffdshow encodes the subtitles directly into the video (or at least that's how I assume it works)
>>
>>58105230
Well ffdshow is a collective project that wraps various ffmpeg filters (i.e. libavfilter stuff) as DirectShow filters. It's not really right to say that ‘ffdshow’ is doing something, it's more like <this subtitle filter that happens to be part of FFmpeg> is doing something, and ‘ffdshow’ is just the project enabling you to use that with EVR. Minor pet peeve but I thought I'd mention it nonetheless.

As for your question, yes, I'm pretty sure that EVR can't natively render subtitles on top of the video stream, so the only way to do it is to hard-sub them onto the video with a video filter. This has some downsides, of course, the most notable being the fact that it gets rendered at video res instead of at output res (enjoy blurry subs for upscaled content).

Another downside is that rendering subtitles onto the video track is stupidly difficult to get right while also not affecting the video track. You basically have to render them in 4:2:0 YCbCr (unless you want to transform the video to RGB, which you absolutely don't), but since most subs are rendered in RGB directly this means going backwards through the RGB<->YCbCr matrix (which, for VSFilter/aegisub compatibility, is often not actually the one you'll later use for decoding the video but usually BT.601 or something stupid), subsample the chroma plane and then blit it on top of the untouched video frame.
