It explains definitions, common terms, and concepts exceptionally well, where as "Java for Dummies" is just going to tell you what to type to get a result.
It's a dense read but if you sit down and even just read the first chapter you'll absorb a decent amount of knowledge.
It's not the kind of book you can just skim the pages and get the intent.

This desu... might be useful with a computer but strictly not necessary because you are going to look things up anyway when using regular expressions anyway if you are new. But it's a great way to know the powerful shit it can do.
