Bullshit aside, Mint Cinnamon 18.1 is the best linux distro for most people right?
>>
You could make that argument. It's not an absolute truth, but aside from the embarrassment the devs suffered due to their lackadaisical approach to security, there's nothing wrong and a lot right with it.
>>
>>58089960
Pretty much this. I run Mint Mate and have zero issues with it. Steam runs fine as well.
>>
>>58089912
only because "it's similar to windows" so most people can adapt faster. But there are better distros (and better DE) out there
>>
If you're looking for a Windows-esque DE for the average normie then yeah cinnamon is what you want. But don't with mint. You can throw that de on any distro. I had it on arch before I learned the magic of i3
>>
>>58089912
Yes.
>>
it's called Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon Edition "Serena"

it's the best distro, anybody who tells you otherwise is a newfag trying to troll

I don't give a fuck if you're dumb enough to use it, but you saying it's unequivocally the best distro and anyone who disagrees is a 'newfag' makes you sound retarded. Like a retard. Like you are. And a fag. Faggot.

What does Mint do or do better that the *Ubuntus doesn't?

Yep, it really is a superb, polished and stable OS.

Hard to fault in unless you are a complete linux nerd.

it does everything exactly the same as Ubuntu LTS but it's optimized for the beautiful, elegant Cinnamon desktop environment
>>

No amazon BS. Ubuntu sold out and cant be trusted. Mint at least isn't selling your data and is Ubuntu underneath.

Should I go for Ubuntu or Mint?
>>
>>58093010
What wasn't successful?
>>
>>58089912
Yeah, pretty much. Easy to use and install and familiar enough looking and working for most people to use straight away. And Ubuntu might have more support online, given how popular it is, but it shouldn't be a huge issue.

>>58089960
This right here is the truth.
>>
>>58093017
Installing Xubuntu.

I would get to the menu where I choose what I want to do and I hit Try without installing.

A few weird letters and symbols appeared on the left and then a few solid screens with lines going through them.

The Xubuntu loading screen came up for a few seconds and then just gave me a black screen.

Every time I try it is the same thing.
>>
>>58093064

>>
>>58093064
I would use Ubuntu Mate or Linux mint Mate instead.
>>
>>58093104
What is good about Ubuntu Mate? Also ricing?
>>
>>58093120
Nothing. Mate is inferior to all other DEs in every way.
>>
>>58093154
Ah
>>
>>58093064
Are you on a laptop? Sometimes with linux and certain distros they will jack the brightness to 100% at certain point but the screen brightness will be inverted like 100% will actually be 0%. Try hitting your -brightness key. The laptop I'm on now had that problem with buntu. It sounds like that's what's happening as they max out the brightness giving you a blank screen. Just remember that the brightness may be inverted.
>>
>>58093159
I am on a desktop.
>>
>>58093120
There is nothing stopping you from installing every fucking DE you can think of. In the past I've done it plenty. The machine I'm on right now has GNOME KDE i3 and Xmonad.
>>
>>58093179
I know that, but that wasn't my question.
>>
>>58093188
You said "Ubuntu MATE" like a retard maybe don't talk like an idiot. If you are specifically talking about a DE the distro name (Ubuntu) has no place in the discussion.
>>
Yes, Mint is the best for most people, Arch is the second best, every other distro is a meme

>>
>>58093244
If you're new to GNU/Linux I'd recommend anything Ubuntu based, Mint is Ubuntu based. I feel that Mint is "less bloated" than other Ubuntu distros, and that's why I recommend it. I'd go with Linux Mint Mate if you want Mate.
Once you feel comfy with using the terminal I'd move to Arch.

I have used Ubuntu before and I got really bored of it and uninstalled.

An anon recommended that I tried Xubuntu and posted this picture of his desktop and I immediately fell in love with it.

Really this is the distro I want but I am having issues getting it installed.

>>58089960

>>
>>58089912
I can't get it to connect to eduroam
>>
>>58093346
That's a sexy desktop. If you can't install Xubuntu itself, perhaps you could install another distro and then install XFCE?
>>
>>58093388

I had this problem too. This fixed it:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/215870/cant-access-eduroam-wireless-internet-connection-settings-linux-mint-17
>>
>>58093416

To add, dont set a certificate. At my uni we had a update recently, and doing those steps, but excluding the certificate solved it.
>>
>>58093406
Exactly I was thinking of just installing Ubuntu and putting XFCE.

Could I rice it basically the same way as here? Or could there be any issues.

I am gonna try and figure out a fix first and if there is none then I will just go with that.
>>
>>58093388
>use PEAP
>Then ignore every other setting (no certificate required)
>At the end type in your username and password
That did it for me
>>
>>58090854
Latest xubuntu LTS is really buggy. Random hang ups, mouse doesn't work after unlocking the screen, Firefox takes like a minute to load (being only few seconds on the same machine with opensuse), the file manager crashes when renaming files and a bunch of other stuff I can't recall right now.

I only installed it couple of days ago but so far I'm really frustrated with it.
>>
>>58093447
Yeah you could rice it like that easily.
Looks like all he has done is changed the theme to Arc, icon theme looks like Numix circle, and made the panel transparent.
>>
>>58093477
Yep I got all of that figured out, it's simple. I just wonder if there would be any issues if I tried doing it with XFCE on Ubuntu for example.
>>
>>58090854

xbuntu isnt very stable. the xfce of mint 18 is breddy gud tho.

I hate gnome personally. But if you can bare it, you may as well run Debian. That's a rock solid, but super shitty combo.
>>
can i at least get wifi to work on it? that's all i care about.
>>
>>58093498
I don't think there would be an issue. Xubuntu is literally just Ubuntu with XFCE instead.
>>
>>58092535
They're website got hacked for a day back in february. If you downloaded 64bit cinnamin mint that day, and didn't check you're checksum.....Bulgaria.
What more proof do you need of the piss poor security of wordpress?
I mean mint.
>>
>>58093498
Try xubuntu-core ISO or a ubuntu--mini ISo and "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop or xubuntu-core"
>>
>>58093516
Probably? It depends on firmware, as usual for any system. Test with a live CD/USB before installing.
>>
>>58093599
>They're website
>they are website
I didn't bother reading the rest.
>>
>>58093574
I'll do that then. Thanks a lot friend!

Another thing I was curious about is if I used xfce as my main de and I switched over to Unity for whatever reason would it have all the stuff as far as applications, settings, and etc?
The anon recommended that I change the file system as well (I was gonna do it) so I don't know if that would be a problem.

>>58093636
But isn't that basically just a very stripped down version of xfce? I would like for it to bring some comfy stuff.
>>
>>58089912
Gentoo is the best.
Install Gentoo.
>>
>>58093673
yup. which is why maybe you should try xubuntu-desktop on a minimal install or elsewhere. that will be full setup
>>
>>58093673
Oh you can also do the same with Mint xfce you know. You can remove the mint panel and add xfce one.

>>
>>58093688
Alright got it. So I get a minimal install of Ubuntu and do sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop?

No unity?

>>58093707
Shit, I would like that.
>>
>>58093733
yeah. is just nothing like a debian netinstall. comes with nothing but what you install. it will just be a command line. You will need ethernet probably.

 sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
>>
>>58093673
Yes. The applications that come with Unity will show up on XFCE and vice versa, unless you uninstall them. Some settings may change, but I imagine things like GTK theme will stay.
>>
>>58093751
Italian or Spanish speaker detected.
>>
>>58093757
Thanks. I think I will try to do something else though, not sure if that would be my best option.

>>58093751
I do have ethernet so I shouldn't have any problems there.
But it seems that I am having a gpu driver issue not allowing me to install, wouldn't it just be the same case? Also would it have things like the media player, and etc.
>>
>>58093866
I believe it comes with everything xubuntu does. which is why "desktop" is added. sometimes people just always use minimal install since easier and the same for all flavors
>>
>>58093719
>girl
Ehhh... enjoy your husbando.
>>
>>58094051
Thanks, I'll probably do this, sounds like my best choice. I just don't know if I am gonna have the same issue.

Their website was hacked once. I guess that means we're all completely fucked from here on out. Nobody is safe!

That was one security flaw on the site that was found and fixed. That says nothing about the everyday security of the Distro. It could have happened to anyone. This is why torrents are always the better choice.
>>
>>58089912

on a 2016 laptop it's fucking shit. cant wake up form sleep, shit battery, shit wifi, dont even think about bluetooth.
>>
>>58094273
>That says nothing about the everyday security of the Distro. It could have happened to anyone
Well, except that while all other distros get security updates, Mint users are cucked by needing to choose between security and stability. If you enable security, it will break - if you enable stability, you're literally naked to 0days.
