Location / platform / function / number

TACSW12R2VH01 (TAComa / Server / Windows 2012R2 / Virtual Host 01)

SEACW81OF15S07 (SEAttle / Client / Windows 8.1 / Office 15 / Static 07)

Linux systems are usually appliances, but not always

SEAZNLBEX1501 (SEAttle / Zen Load Balancer / EXchange 2015 cluster / 01)

AD sites have the own name, but usually a product code name, like Janus (WFW 3.11, client deployment lab), Wolfpack (NT4 cluster service, Hyper-V HA lab), Monad (PowerShell automation testing), etc.

When AD sites don't follow the above, a state gets used if the site needs something scoped.

For some reason

I have a lot of them, so I name them after their hardware. My laptops are Thinkpad and MacBook and the my 4 Ra's Pis are color coded, so the one in the living room is named RPiBlue, the one in the living room is RPiOrange, the one in my bedroom is RPiGreen. Then I have an old desktop machine which acts as a home server which is named DellServer. They all run Debian.

Tried it once. People lost their fucking minds, always telling me I've spelled stuff incorrectly.

Names are manually assigned because it helps me prevent sprawl. Except in Monad, where the automation scripting builds the names.

Depends widely

Some of our servers are named after greek letters; others are named after foods. Some are named after ex-girlfriends. (I've started using this scheme for my VPSen and VMs)

I named my home machine ‘xor’ because of a combination of factors. My networking stuff is named after stars, galaxies, superclusters etc.

>What hostname do you give your computers / server?
I only have 2 rules:
1: Must start with a letter
2: 8 characters or less (for compatibility with some ancient shit - Lan Manager)

You don't need more than 8 characters for a system name anyway. I cringe at some of the shit I've seen in some data centers:

Mythology names. My first selfbuilt PC I edgily named Prometheus, since he gave us enlightenment in giving us fire.

Then I made a new pc made partially with parts from Prometheus, kind of rebirthing Prometheus. Thus Osiris.
