I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Ubuntu is pretty easy. Xubuntu is lighter. Debian is stable but harder to install, and for people that know what they are doing.

So just go for any *buntu flavor distro

Fedora just works.

bunsen labs for all around usability or q4os if you rly rly want to stick to the windows 7/xp ui feel

both are debian based and have sane defaults so compatibility or documentation wont be a problem

install gentoo, it is really the only way to go

You must be more precise when you mention UI. There is a ton of ****distros**** that come with different UI but in reality are all the same.

If you REALLY are a veteran and know how to install things from the ground up, go for Devuan netinstall (or even Gentoo).

If you, on the other hand, want to save the hassle of making a decision and want to install something really quick, go for the Lubuntu, which has an austere UI but with all you need.

Or obviate any biased comment, go to distrowatch, and pick yourself.

I know most will disagree, but Linux mint resparked my love of GNU. I'd done the Ubuntu distros before and always ended up reinstalling Windows. Mint just works and is fairly easy to fuck about with

Like you, I messed around with tons of distros on and off. Lately, I've been looking to ditch windows again and I've fallen in love with BSD. I can't recommend it highly enough.
