Scala vs Haskell.

Last job was analytics, current job is data engineering. I like that my current job is only data-engineer-in-name since I'm doing both machine learning work and shitty wrangling work - I like to switch it up often.

Deep down I don't feel like I'm competent enough for a legit data scientist job, even though I may be. On another point, I don't know Scala nor do I really want to learn it.

Currently I'm god-tier on the python analytics stack, know just a hint of Clojure from a short week of obsessive learning, and now I realize that Clojure isn't going to be fun because it's so reliant on Java for big-boy tools.

I'm now eyeing Haskell. Problem is that there are literally 0 results when I search "Haskell" as a keyword on Glassdoor in my city (population over 10mil in America).

I want to believe. What should I do /g/? What do your elf eyes see?

Haskell is dead where I live.
My best suggestion? Make a list of senior developers of different companies in your city and send out some emails asking for advice. Some of them will be willing to help. Their advice will be much more useful than that of random strangers.

Choose Scala if you want a job. Choose Haskell if you want a based language.

Finally a good thread.

If you want to use functional programming in life, aim for Erlang.

What are some common uses of Erlang?

Being a big data developer and using Scala everyday, I second this anon.

I've been a web developer professionally for 5 years or so, but I fucking love FP. Any advice how to make the switch?

You are missing out anon.

For FP the Haskell experience can be mirrored in Scala almost 100%. The Scala compiler has a couple of caveats because of the Java roots (type inference is not as powerful) but it's worth the trade off.

Scala is the optimal language in the intersection of the "I want a language that is actually good" and "I want a language that will get me a job" categories.

Scala features both OOP and FP, and it's better than 90% of OOP-only and FP-only languages.

Seriously anon get this book, thank me later.

scala is a meme language, java byte code with tons of wrapped routines and macros, it's bloat
>>
>>58066914
I switched from C# developer. I got the opportunity by chance. I learned FP and Spark on job. But I would say that out of all the FP languages (Haskell, Scala, F#, Erlang etc. ), SCALA would be the most easiest to grasp. It could be because it's a hybrid between FP and Imperative. Also Scala has a high demand in Euripe, can't say for rest of the world though.

The meme language has brought me tons of job offers. Keep living the dream anon.

Basically, telecommunications, telecommunications and telecommunications.

As an FP weenie and Java hater I never even considered Scala, but this is getting me a bit hyped (especially since I'm currently being paid to write fucking PHP). What's the catch?
>>

it's still basically java

Any advice for someone wanting to move from Business Intelligence to Data Engineering?

No CS degree but have Java, Python and SQL

Thanks, I'm a C# developer and I'm in Europe too. Scala it is. :)
