Better than Xterm yeah, at least if you want to enable transparency, maybe you don't need i3-gaps since your display is kinda small but probably want nitrogen since is easier to change/restore your background because you'll have to edit your i3 config file just once instead changing the /path/filename everytime with feh, compton will integrate nicely all elements of i3 with smooth effects, getting rid of the tearing if any among other shit.

What's so good about i3-gaps compared to i3? I use i3, and I don't really have any complaints about it.

it's a fork, has more options for tweaking the bar and how tiling works besides the obvious that you can handle gaps on a window per window config or use global or workspace settings. Bar has some little improvements but I believe most have been already pushed to regular i3, don't know if you can set transparency on regular i3. Besides that you can also do stuff like pinning windows in a set screen space and even if you move around on workspaces that window will persist.
Honestly it's been a while since I use gaps and i3blocks only but I think most shit has been or is going to be pushed also to i3 (minus the gaps settings).
