Just checked speccy for the first time in a couple of months and holy cow my cpu is overheating. This is in idle. I immediately opened the case and checked the stock cooler. The fan is running at it's usual speed. Virtually no dust since I cleaned it out a few months ago.
What's going on here? Fan is seemingly running fine. Built this PC about 4 years ago. Temps are usually in the 40s.
the paste has probably gotten poor contact, gone brittle and cracked or something
I'd grab some paste, redo it and see if it helps

I'll do that. I have a locally owned computer shop here in town I can check in the morning instead of having to wait for amazon to ship some out. Is that a pretty common problem?

Yes it is.

especially after four years

Not a speccy thread you retard

anon there are ways to monitor your temps and cpu load from your toolbar
http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

supposed to change the paste out every 1~2 years.
It's cheap(under $15) and takes less than 5 minutes to do.
Consider it the same as doing an oil change, except less messy.

Wait, really? My mother's 10 year old pre-built was only ever dusted with compressed air but I've never changed the thermal paste for her and cpu temps still sit below 35 C whenever I come over and make sure her shit works.
