How can Microsoft save Windows OS?
>>
>>58047985
Make Win9
>>
By giving it an honorable death and killing it now instead of making it worse and worse than it already was as it slowly fades into oblivion.
>>
>>58048040
+1
>>
firing all pajeets and altogether scrapping windows 10, then making a new one with less bloat, better design, and no "telemetry" user data mining
>>
>>58048147
>>>/r/eddit
>>
By staying on course. Microsoft is starting to do great things again and I can see a bright future there.
>>
>>58048156
>>58048705
No. No. Just give up now.
>>
Tell the nsa to fuck off
>>
>>58047985
I sure hope they can save it so the containment OS isn't broken open.
>>
>>58047985

Giving control back to users who want it by not forcing updates, not calling home, removing cloud bullshit, removing product activation.. basically impossible
>>
>>58047985
Use the Linux Kernel
>>
>>58047985
t. linux/osx user
What is wrong with microsoft apart of the underpowered update server?
The kernel is a little clustered but basically micro.
The snapins on the administrative tools work nice on modern hardware.
You can avoid most maleware and nothing is 100% secure anyway.
Powershell seems reasonable.
>>
>>58047985
Make it free and just collect and sell telemetry data
>>
>>58047985
Under gates' direction, microsoft did only good things, morally speaking
As soon as he let go of it, they started doing greedy, immoral things with it
Microsoft will not die so long as the nsa and whomever else is paying them for private data
Microsoft will not succeed, financially, without these practices going forward
It has become an evil corporation since gates passed the torch
Say what you will about their OSs but the real troubling thing is that there is no motivation for a corporation NOT to do shitty things, hence why gates was such an important player in the proverbial games for windows live
With him effectively irrelevant to the company, they are free, and motivated to, do shitty things like data harvesting and monitoring
>>
>>58048040
This.
>>
>>58047985
by not being an opressive overbearing greedy corporation, build a good OS that is good and just works, no fancy eye candy, leave the eye candy for third party theme builders, just make a clean simple OS that works like WinNT/2k/XP and sell it for a reasonable price 40 bucks for a DVD rom of windows, if you sell it at a reasonable price you wont have to worry about piracy because more people can afford to buy it, and if you build it simple yet good it wont cost as much to build and microsoft can afford to sell it at reasonable prices,

>>
>>58050548

Gates lost control of his company and that's why he had to go.

Microsoft was making software and had the most stable operating system in the world (Windows 2000)

Then I assume under pressure from the board they decided to start making shitty chink hardware like XBOX

In my opinion the beginning of the end for Microsoft was when they decided to make HALO a console exclusive.

I mean how can you be the biggest consumer software company in the world then decide you are going to make one of the best games the world has ever seen some bullshit console game?
>>
>>58048040
that is possible, just kill windows, and microsoft focus on building apps & office to run on Linux
>>
>>58047985
Make a linux distro with a windows subsystem
Like wine but actually functional
>>
>>58050672
you can still make win 8 & 10 look like the older versions (sortof)

There's nothing wrong with Windows. Literally nothing. If you're autistic maybe you'd like to have zero telemetry, and maybe you'd like to be able to change your DE, but that's it. Using it brings far more benefits than not using it.
>>
>>58050838

>literally nothing wrong with it
>except for some things
>and some other things
>at least it's better than nothing

funny on purpose or by accident?
>>
Windows is perfectly fine, not like lonix which failed as a mobile, console and desktop os

We know you definitely are since autists usually don't have very good reading comprehension.

They need to scrap everything and start from scratch. A complete overhaul. No more of this patching and reusing old code to create a gimped bloated mess.

One of the big problems is that the guys who made Windows so "great" have either retired or moved on to other companies. It was their code, their project, their child. Now Microsoft is forced to hire pajeets that are working with code they barely even understand.

Create more room for customisation, let users easily customise the shell or create new shells using some tools.

Once it was possible to create a toolbar from the task bar and drag it to another end of the screen. It was like your own little customisable taskbar.

Take some inspiration from those who create custom shells like Stardock.

Add more free utility apps for everyday stuff.

Make the UI more consistent. All system changes that dig deepest in the OS options are made using the same old Win32 API interface
>>
>>58050676

that was the sentence that greenlit the xbox.
>>
>>58047985
make windows 7 part 2

basicly windows 7 as it is, but with new/improved features
No ui changes
no unnecessary change for change sake features
no telemetry

just let me own my fucking os

one of the best type of software organization, leaving the desktop with things that matter or keeping the desktop clean only to put work that is in current progress(thats what i do).
>>
>>58048705
I agree. It's not even a matter of opinion. From a technical perspective, the barebones of W10 is remarkably efficient and stable, convenient and seemless. And Microsoft is making great innovations in many areas of technology nowadays. However, if there's one thing that could slow the gravy train... it's the fucking largescale data collection. It could become a major concern for the general consumer.
>>
>>58052586
>just let me own my fucking os
as if
>>
>>58047985
Build on top of something better than hacked together and band-aided Windows NT.
>>
>>58054006
>$0.10 just got put in your curry 'count

the last few people i know that were hired by MS were h1bs planning on moving that delicious west coast money back to india to buy a wife. literally no point in using anything microsoft anymore. if it wasn't for steam/games, i would permanently uninstall. They're living on the monopoly they've built and that's it.
>>
>>58053400
there's some good tell alls on the web from core microsoft programmers. They were honestly a good bunch. you gotta remember bit bangers from the 70s and 80s are probably over 50 now and have no interest in OSS or continuing windows in general
>>
>>58047985
Go back to gated check-ins and build masters. Agile development is cancer.
>>
Windows is dead. Microsoft needs to retire the Windows brand and product line and start basically from scratch with modern code and architecture. There's far too much legacy code for it to be worth saving.
>>
>>58050772
Or have an actual coherent design that smoothly transitions between separate desktop/mobile/tablet whatever bullcrap. If it means designing 3 different but separate GUI, so be it. Fuck Metro.
>>
>>58055079
/thread
windows 10 is really just windows 6.2
>>
They need to remove cmd, make it platform independent and adopt the gnu tools but that would break the legacy support that keeps them alive.
>>
>>58047985
Open source it.
>>
>>58055902
Every game I play works just fine in Linux.

I'd switch if my wifi fucking worked.
>>

Fuck off vidya faggot
>>
>>58056237
But metro and material design is what the internet is adopting. It makes sense that you want your OS to look the same as facebook or google for example.

Correct me if I'm being retarded, but can't you block traffic to/from the telemetry servers via router firewall rules?

Or is it that we don't know the server IPs?

Jesus christ that's fucking awful.

Is that the only source of telemetry data, or is there a huge clusterfuck of programs that send individual streams?

>>
>>58058157
If you open an ip sniffer and watch the windows 10 traffic it looks like a ddos attack every second its running.
xbox does the same thing.
connections to servers everywhere from brazil to china.

When I was sniffing xbox I tried to blacklist the microsoft servers from showing up, theres literally too many to blacklist.

>>
>>58058269
How much does that even cost? Just looked into Enterprise and it's some $7/m subscription.
That'd be over $500 by now if I'd had to pay that for W7 Ultimate, ie. the version I use that doesn't involve any of this garbage.

Not to mention that amount of laptops these days that come with W10 already worked into the price. Home more often than pro, too.

Some programs won't function properly due to missing codecs. So even more garbage.

Also..
>>
>>58047985
They would literally need to build a new OS from the ground up in order for it to not be shit. They would also need to lift a lot of ideas from Linux, like making it fucking modular instead of giving everything admin privileges.
>>
>>58057783
>via router firewall
Why yes, yes you can. But it's a huge-ass list and are bound to change periodically or something.
>>
>>58058654
LTSB N 2015 user here. Only thing that doesn't work out of the box is windows defender but can be easily reinstalled.

Sadly but I'd actually go for this. Also using a linux kernel would be nice and make only two versions (like consumer with all the rancid normie shit and pro just a bare bone OS with which you can choose what modules you want to use, wouldn't be a problem if they charged some small amount for some).
