1. Install Ubuntu Mate with Redmond
2. Decide to live on the edge and install Antergoes/Arch with Gnome... Break it.
3. Everyone swears by Gnome so you install Ubuntu Gnome, not feeling it.
4. Reinstall Ubuntu Mate and pickup a dark/grey theme.
5. Repeat?

Wrong. Choose "hard", i.e. one that has to be installed, configured and administered through the command line. Learn that shit and the differences between the distros will be superficial. Heck, even the differences between Unixes will be almost unnoticeable.

It always seem a little ridiculous to me when people think using this or using that distro makes them somehow cooler. If you actually know what you are doing, which distro is running is one of the least of your concerns.

I've started using Linux 15 years ago, initially on Suse, then Slackware. So that's what I recommend to dig into Linux: Slackware.

About 10 years ago I then switched in relatively short successions to Crux, then Arch, Ubuntu and later to LinuxMint which I'm still using today, simply to not be bothered with having to manually install problematic 3rd party stuff.

This is good advice OP. Ubuntu MATE, or Linux Mint Cinnamon or MATE. it doesn't get any more simple than that. Install Virtualbox and use a VM to fuck around with other installs for learning purposes.

I don't know... Last time I installed it I could not even create a usb that worked from the iso. I had to use a old version to get it to work and then spend a lot of time just updating it. A complete pain in the ass.

I have no idea how anyone managed to install it otherwise, did they burn it to a cd or something?
