Stupid Questions Thread

How would you explain to someone that is a little bit tech literate (knows what is linux, did some programming of his free time) why privacy is actually something important.
This guy actually don't mind if I send him a lot of stuff about the subject, he is actually interested about it. Problem is that I don't want to spend too many time and wanted to know if there was a fast way to explain it

>>
>>58034085
In my own personal view, privacy is a prerequisite for freedom of speech. What do you do when you're around people? You filter your speech and your thoughts. You adjust and temper yourself to fit nicely with everyone else. You might still be shaped your own unique way but you aren't allowed to be you. Only with privacy are you free to actually speak and think your mind. If you have to tiptoe around a hundred different things then you aren't very free. And at this point just searching for "linux" is enough to get you on a list in the US and hosting a video of yourself stuffing your fist in your mouth while drunk can get you arrested in Britain.

Why don't they simply make the color black equivalent to the pixel being switched off?
>>

OLED screens do that
Most LCD displays can't do that because the backlight is a single source, the pixel just blocks the light
>>
>>58035651
they do where possible, but i take it you're talking about LCD's, that's not how it works
LCD pixels do not generate light, they just selectively block light from the backlight behind them, so to make black, they need to fully block the backlight

So one of my family members' desktop shit the bed. Completely froze out of nowhere, and upon rebooting, hung at the "Starting Windows" screen. Safe mode also hangs in the same manner while loading, as does attempting to boot from a repair disc. I figured it to be an issue with damaged system files, but removing the hard drive and trying to boot Ubuntu in live mode off a USB experiences the same issues. In addition, I've reset the CMOS and run memtest86, which hasn't shown any errors with the RAM, what else could be causing the problem?
>>
>>58035651
Because that's usually the colour white. on LCD screens there's a big backlight and the LCD pixels block out the white like in a digital watch.
>>
>>58035788
check the fans are all working, and that the machine, especially the cpu heatsink, is clear of dust
also, how long did you run memtest for? i've seen people only run it for 5 min, that doesn't cut it
>>
>>58035788
Sounds like faulty disk or other hardware. Disconnect as many components as you can and boot into Linux live CD, then add them back in one by one until you find the offender.

my money is on the disk.
>>
>>58035835
>" but removing the hard drive and trying to boot Ubuntu in live mode off a USB experiences the same issues."
it's not the disk
>>
>>58035821
The fans all work and everything is dust free.
I ran memtest for at least three hours, so I'm fairly certain the RAM is fine.

>>58035835

One of your cpu cores might have burnt out. Disable all but one core in the bios, see if that works.
>>
>>58035867
It could just be that something on the mobo has popped. Remove everything that you can, gfx, as much ram as you can, peripherals, turn shit off in the BIOS. Work your way up.

Can you get a log of Linux booting up? It might give some clues.

When booting Windows, it locks on "Starting Windows," same for the repair/install CD.
With a Ubuntu USB, I'm able to select language, then live or persistant mode, then all I get is a blinking cursor in the corner. Same thing happens with an Arch USB.
The machine does have a dedicated GPU, the motherboard doesn't have onboard graphics though so I can't do much to test without it.

If it isn't written physically on your router, then there isn't a way and you can reset your router to default factory settings by holding the reset button on the back

try:
admin // password
admin // admin

or google your specific router for defaults

other than that, just reset it to factory and then config the stuff

Ok follow up question, how the fug does that even work?

Does windows just know your motherboard model number or something? Like is that information just stored when you activate windows?

Or can shit just be saved to the motherboard or something? Now I'm interested about this

Your motherboard has various specific things (e.g. MAC adress) that microsoft can use to identify your hardware. It is sent to their datacenters and stored there. I don't think they use the MAC address though because it's easy to spoof.

There's nothing to trust with tpb though. It's just an index of magnet links, anybody who wants to know what you download would just have to download the same torrent file/magnet link you did from any other site to get your ip address. That's why the really important thing when it comes to torrents is using a vpn/seedbox.

Take the "minimum" tier. You can avoid the GPU and take a beefier CPU if you don't plan on doing anything related to 3D.

I'm trying to make OBS work alongside GTAV without dropping too much fps; my plan so far is making OBS use cores 5+6 of my 6 core processor since GTA hogs core 1 and to a lesser extent 2-4. I don't want to manually set the affinity every time I launch OBS though, so I came to a thingy (not a comp sci person beyond hardware) that will launch OBS with the affinity I want.

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start "" /affinity xx "C:\Your_Program.exe"

xx=
01 - 1st CPU
02 - 2nd CPU
03 - 1st and 2nd CPU
04 - 3rd CPU
05 - 1st and 3rd CPU
06 - 2nd and 3rd CPU
07 - 1st 2nd and 3rd CPU
08 - 4th CPU
09 - 1nd and 4th CPU
0A - 2rd and 4th CPU
0B - 1st 2nd and 4th CPU
0C - 3rd and 4th CPU
0D - 1st 3rd and 4th CPU
0E - 2nd 3rd and 4th CPU
0F - 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th CPU

I've always had trouble with mathematical patterns so this is frying my brain trying to figure it out. Can anyone tell me what the hexadecimal I need for "xx" is to launch on 5+6? Tell me how it's done too if you don't mind.

GTA runs pretty roughly, I get 70fps (my set limit) while flying, 50 while driving in the desert, 30-50 in cities. I've had the game for over a year and tinkered with the settings every way I can to make the thing behave. When I start playback buffering with OBS the usage on core 1 goes from about 90 up to 95-100% while all the others (which are at about 70-80 while GTA is running) climb about 5% each and my frame rate drops by 20fps. So I figure setting OBS to the cores GTA is least likely to put weight on would get better game performance.
>>58040528
It doesn't stop there, the next step would use core 5 only, after that 1+5 and so on but I get lost shortly past that. (I only use Hexadecimal for color values so I have no clue whats after 0F either)

np, fyi, the value is pretty simple, it's a byte, in hexadecimal, and each bit represents a cpu

for example;
00000101 = 05
first and third bit/cpu from the right
00001101 = 0D
first, second, and fourth bit/cpu from the right
00110000 = 30
fifth and sixth bit/cpu from the right
11111111 = FF
all eight bits/cpus (more and you need more than two hex digits)

Idle temperatures do not matter at all. You could drop it down to 30's with better cooling but that won't do anything except increase fan noise.

My graphics card idles at 50-55 celsius because it doesn't spin fans when idle. I could set fan speed to 80% to drop it down to 25 celcius but I won't because idle temperatures do not matter.

I checked it and there wasn't anything disjointed, but there was some dust since this house tends to pick dust easily... was the huge noise simply from dusty hardware? (3-4 months old hardware)
Also how to properly clean the dust?

No. This nexus is the only phone ever connected to my pc. Now i have downloaded drivers from this thread and still no luck. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/drivers-nexus-4-driver-windows-t1992345
This is ADB driver.
>>58041622
Shit. looks like so. It was supposed to have less bloatware than normal version.
>>
>>58041657
N is missing these functionalities.
Try installing https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48231

fedora or debian
though if you're going for debian you might as well just roll ubuntu

there's none that doesn't require some computer knowledge.
ship the libraries with it or make the installer download them.

WD Blue or Seagate Barracuda if you want a cheap, consumer-grade HDD for general use. SSDs are different because they're constantly improving but mechanical drives have pretty much been finalized by this point.

Win 7. It's just simpler and easier. Though it's mostly just a personal preference.

Do you want something more stable that is less wonky? Win 7. If you want DX12 and, well, nothing else really. Get Win 10.

Already done that, it just seems that windows likes to rape the hard drive (its not windows update either).

Done malware scans and everything, can't remember what file it is exactly but it was something really core to the OS. I event turned off maintenance tasks and schedule AV scans.

Problem is my tech illiterate aunt will then google "slow computer fix" and end up making it worse downloading random "fixes" from cnet.

What update fixes the "stuck on searching for updates" for win7? Or is this a feature to push people on win10?

Because windows update doesn't work correctly without them*

I think so, a very spiteful and nasty tactic on ms's part.

>the download link of the x86 version of an update lists all archtectures of this particular update (x64 among them).

I can't make sense of what this sentence.
>>
>>58043309
Do you have windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit? Right click on "computer" in the start menu, click properties.

What does it say under system type? it will either be 32 bit (x86) or 64 bit.

it's some finland word.

>>58043355
The sentence wasn't saying "pick the correct version for your architecture, it was implying that each download link of the "x86 version" was somehow listing all archtechtures of the update, which makes no sense at all.

I means the link to the ms catalog page will also list both 32 and 64 bit versions, meaning yo need to be careful which one you select twice.

For example I just clicked a 32 bit link but the ms page lists the update for all versions.

Basically ms want less workload for their website admins.

Which downsides do Antergos and Manjaro have (asides from le werks/doesn't werk on my machine maymay)?
>>
>>58043159
So I installed the updates that supposedly fixes it? How long is it supposed to take to search for updates if it works, assuming I have ~50 uninstalled updates?

So will the monthly win7 rollup packs contain all the updates ever released/repacked, assuming you already have SP1?
>>
>>58043649
If you wanted a downside I'd say based on another distribution.
Other downside would be since it's based on arch, it comes with stuff pre installed by default, which is not really smart considering one of the point of arch linux.

Are those downsides legit ? They are somehow bullshit I think, as long as you're happy with your distribution

Would two older processors be better at processing video than a processor that four or five generations newer?

kinda weird question, but

Is it true that MS might deactivate your win7 license if you keep reinstalling it too many times on different machines (even if you have retail)?

Also, is there a unique identifier in each win7 disc, tying it to the license somehow? As in, would MS see that the 10 installations, all spamming the rearm activation command each month, came from my disc, or are all discs indetical?
>>
>>58043811
The just werks/doesn't werk maymay can be applied to pretty much any distribution.
If the distro has the right user friendliness/customization etc., drivers and DE, go for it.
