Not exactly headphone, but... Looking for a mixer (wrong term?) that will take two audio inputs and properly blend them to a single output device. Inputs are a cable box and a PC, each with RCA and optical outputs. The output device will probably end up being a set of Sennheiser RS 165 RF wireless headphones (unless there are good reasons to stay away from them).

That's the right term. In general you won't want to use the optical as your mixer will then need to have onboard DAs. The Mackie Mix5 is what you want, it has unbalanced inputs so you just go RCA to 1/4" TS for each channel. It's not great audio quality but nothing is for what you want to do (unless you are ready to spend muchomaspesos).

You can also get DIY Classic 47 Amps of ebay/aliexpress for under $10 USD.

Classic 47, the one I mentioned in my original reply is really quite good. Next step from that would be a DIY 02.

>>
>>58007536
Not sure, but you can just get a 1/4" socket from your local electronics parts store or ebay and use that instead

DIY O2 doesnt come with a case or knob btw
>>
>>58007302
Ok. So tell me, whenever you aren't in your studio the equipment isn't always exactly what you want, and if you go in open to that then you can usually find something beautiful. Even if it's just a pair of SM57s in the right place. It's never exactly the "right gear" for the job but with good talent that's not really a limitation.

So all this butthurt about "the only good headphones" is so much wasted energy. If people only knew how much terrible shit we sometimes have to deal with they'd be more patient with their own gear.

Eric Clapton's Unplugged album is fantastic. Even if you don't like his music, or how it was "mastered" it's a fantastic album. A good system will revel space and intimacy that you can't hear on a crappy car system, but it's not like the music disappears on a crappy car system. The groove is still there. FUCK go listen to some Zydeco and tell me how important your headphones are.
>>
>>58007442
The O2 is really really good. Make the funds happen. Millett's Butte is a good opamp headphone amp but it's not much cheaper (and don't skimp on the caps).
>>
I just got a thinkpad what music player should I put on it? Is there any way to transfer music to an ipod besides itunes?
>>
>>58007624
Nobody argues that point though. /hpg/ is summed down to audiophile consumerism. Most people arguing the dumb shit like 'AKG vs SNAPHEISER REEE' are purely shitposters, and people who argue between headphones are just legitimately trying to help people get the best value for their money. [or confirm their biases, which is another story all together]

Don't forget some people have a lower tolerance for bad/unsatisfactory audio. I'm fine with using cheapo $50 dollar headphones for a brief time, but then there are people who won't accept anything below Stax or some shit.

the h'white tascam th-02
>>
>>58007819
There wasn't a question, I guess I thought I was going to get to one based on an equipment lowest common denominator but I never did.

I like my IEMs, they are good. I like my Beyer 250s and 990s, they are different. I work on Event 2020s, JBL cinema three ways, and Genelecs. They are all different and none are really more true than the other, just different.

Not saying there isn't good advice, I just see a lot of shitposting (but that's not unique to /g/, it annoys me just as much on /k/).

My point to people who are stressing about some audio decision is that in general you aren't going to get the right thing the first time, and it takes experience with a lot of gear to have a sense of what works for you and what doesn't so just try a bunch of stuff and decide what you like. Probably should have lead with that.
>>
>>58007927
Nothing that I know of has surpassed it. Foobar is so open source and well supported by community for plugins and shit.

but honestly do you really want to spend more than 22 on pads for a headphone that costs less than that?
The clamp is hard enough on them that you probably dont want to increase it by getting thicker HM5's like the angled variants, though it could aid if youre using them for portable use and need isolation.

Pleathers work best if you want to keep their low end. Hybrids would probably do well too, though wont isolate as much.

I wouldn't recommend velours on closed cans for most cases.

I've been using a Fiio E10K when I'm at my desk, and it drives these headphones comfortably, but it's on it's last legs. When I move the volume, it only plays out of my right ear until I put pressure on the volume knob and it randomly works again :( But any slight movement of the cable fucks it up again.
>Type of headphone
AKG K7XX for most of everything, but I use some RHA MA750s when I play my drumset, so I would hope that the new DAC/AMP wouldn't produce a hiss or something with my RHAs since they are so easy to drive.

Is there anything that would be a quality of life improvement from the Fiio E10K at around the 100ish mark? The onboard sound of my computer has an audible hiss, so I need both a DAC and an AMP, hopefully in one. I know that something like an AudioEngineD1 or Schiit Stack would be ideal, but I'm tied a bit for cash.
>>
>>58008028
Schiit Fulla. Uses same DAC as in the stacks. Well worth the money and it'd easily beat an E10k in both sound and power.

>>
>>58008119
Both Fullas should run those.

The Fulla 2 has both line out and headphone out, as well as an option for an external power source. Fulla 1 only has head out and USB in.

Fulla 1 has a really shitty knob. It's legitimately difficult to use. The actual casing itself is also quite sharp and uninviting. The knob on the 2 is miles better. Feels really damn smooth.

IMO the 1 looks a lot nicer, but it's a fucking DAC/AMP. Who cares.

Fulla 2 is a lot larger, but that is a lot better if youre using it at a desk.

What exactly is the point in getting a higher end DAC, as opposed to say the Fulla2 or the Fiio E10K? Is there a noticeable cleanliness upgrade? An increase in certain things? I get the AMP part, more power, or getting a tube amp to color the sound, but DACS?
>>
>>58008422
Less colour, and more transparency, features, and more playback modes.

Higher end amps are also because less distortion
>>
>>58008353

>Don't forget some people have a lower tolerance for bad/unsatisfactory audio. I'm fine with using cheapo $50 dollar headphones for a brief time, but then there are people who won't accept anything below Stax or some shit.

What if stuff in the 100-500$ range sounds almost identical to me? Sure there's very small improvements but it still doesn't anywhere as good as I want it to. Even with amp and dac it's still too grainy and unnatural no matter the headphone. FLAC doesn't seem to change anything either

Does it get better at any point or I just have fucked up ears/my expectations aren't realistic?
>>
>>58008289
Holy shit it is $200+. I guess I was remembering the O2 alone which is $125. I have the same problem you do and I like the O2+ODAC that I have.

Try pulling the FiiO apart, you can't really break it more right?

>>58008353
Mostly Jazz but I'm not critical of other people liking whatever they like, and I don't carry the shit I listen to around like some badge of elitism.

Honestly I like my O2+ODAC more than the Grace m903s we use at work.
>>
>>58008625
>Does it get better at any point or I just have fucked up ears/my expectations aren't realistic?
What do you have?
>>
>>58008625
There are two things that could be going on. 1. ear training, 2. actual physical limitations. You could get a hearing test to see if you have limited hearing but most people just don't listen enough to hear the difference. It's almost exactly like tasting wine. You've got to drink a pile if it to start discerning different flavors because initially it just overwhelms your palate.

So if you like your rig and it's cheap then that's fine, stick with enjoying what you have until you find a reason to change it.
>>
>>58008667

Magni/Modi 2 and also Essence STX, honestly I'm not noticing any real difference between the two, I think my Sansa Fuze sounds just as good but less loud.

Headphones, I have tried HD598/600/650, q701, k612, DT770/880/990, X2, ATH-AD700x, some shitty gaymen headsets, etc. Sure some models sound a bit better but the main difference between them seems to be the amount of bass. I think cheap crap like HD25 sounds pretty good even compared to all those flagships.

Do tube amps make a difference? Planar headphones? Audiophile SATA cables? Magical pebbles? I don't fucking know, I'm just starting to believing that "audiophiles" are mentally ill or perhaps I am.

>>58008727
Dunno man, my ears are very sensitive and I can hear the faintest shit, maybe that's why I'm picking up all those sound imperfections? Like I find it hard to listen to someone when there's a background noise, the noise overpowers that voice and they mix up. Headphones just sound unnatural, like there's a constant background white noise and the sound is all "grainy".
>>
>>58008800
>Magni/Modi 2
>I'm just starting to believing that "audiophiles" are mentally ill or perhaps I am.
If you are ill like I am. Try this. This might sound stupid. Tell me if your RCA cable is seperate or both are attached to each other. If attached together plug it in and listen. When you're done remove them. Switch the direction around. If you hear something slightly different. Then you are ill.
>>
>>58008853
They're separate but I don't see how that would make any difference, unless the cables are physically different, which I doubt.

Woah, that's pretty good, the background noise is only barely audible at very high volume and it's certainly nowhere as "grainy" as most music. What's the magic?

I actually listen to plenty to classical stuff (FLAC) but the same issues are present, just to a lesser degree.

It's not my recording, but essentially it's recorded really close with a lot of signal. Most symphonic recordings are not done that way because the engineer is trying to capture the "room" which is what I suspect sound grainy to you. Things recorded really close may be your jam. Try getting out to a few classical concerts or jazz concerts and see if the same things bother you (audience noise may be the biggest bother to you). And then, honestly, begin recording your own stuff. Go meet good musicians and learn to get the sound you want. That's only one recording but I listen to it all the time because I love how intimate it is. It never ceases to satisfy.

Hey I’m thinking about buying myself a pair of open back cans for xmas. I’m mainly into bass heavy edm genres and pop. I’ve had Sennheiser 598HDs and audiotechnica’s ath-m50s and I’me veering more towards sennheiser in terms of sound characteristics. Right now I have a sad Fioo Q1 amp and am wondering if I should just invest in a better amp instead of getting a new pair of cans. I was looking at the Sennheiser 600’s and the BeyerDynamic DT 880 premium series. I’m thinking this amazon deal is currently my best bet as they look like good bundle.

I'm going to get into music production and I'm about to pull the trigger on some MSR7 first before getting a more proper setup (amp, etc).

Is there a better pair of cans in that price range (<250USD) or are these the best I can get without an amp?
>>
>>58009395
Not really, it was popular in the 80s when engineers were trying to record everything totally isolated so that they could have a lot of control in mastering (beginning of the digital multi track age) but all of those recordings sound bad for technical limitations of the time, they are also a little overboard on it.

Hang out on some forums like gearslutz and taperssection and you'll find people sharing their recordings. Also just listen to a pile of things and you'll find some stuff is mastered more to your taste. Go check out ECMs library, most of their stuff is excellently mastered.

>>58009429
My favorite cheap reference is the etymotic ER4s. They are by no means flat but they have good clarity and they do not encourage you to artificially bump anything. Make sure to check your Lfe on some speaker system that can move air though because you may be overdriving it.

That's a pretty accurate description imo. K553 just falls short in consistency and instead of being the usual V-shaped headphone it is when it seals properly, it goes into being a bright nobass one. DT770 doesn't suffer from this level of inconsistency in seal. DT770 also is quite often regarded as more comfortable but that's subjective.

Have you heard the Utopias?
Have you heard the Avantgarde Trios?
Have you heard the S.A.P. Quartettes?
(more than "this one time at a Hi-Fi convention in a hotel")

What "flagship" speakers have you heard, on what power, with what recordings? How do you feel they compare?

Hello!
>>
>>58016135
Besides that pic? I was under the impression it was becoming a more common feature on receivers these days.

Dedicated units, MiniDSP Dirac, the DCX2496 or whatever it was called are examples.

>>58017059
At some point any speaker will fail, but maybe it can be okay if you use it within a few feet.
>>
>>58017025

How the fuck can can you justify that price tag anyway?

Beryllium drivers for bigmchuge speakers that can blast your head off are like 1000$ top so whatever those headphones have can only cost a fraction of that. What's the rest? Made in China plastic frame?

I can understand meme shit like Orpheus since it comes with special equipment to drive them, but generic headphones?

Why do these come in 250 ohms version? What's the fucking point? So they fuck you into buying an amp???

Also, how good are they?
>>
I have a quality headphone amp.
I have a quality pair of headphones.
I have a shitty pair of computer speakers.
I have no dedicated DAC.

Should I invest in some good nearfield speakers, or a DAC first? Current DAC is whatever is onboard an ASUS Z170 mobo.
>>
>>58017743
250 ohm is slightly better than 80
if you have an amp and bring a portable amp with you or you never plan to use them on the go there's literally no reason to not get 250s
>>
>>58017743
>Why do these come in 250 ohms version? What's the fucking point? So they fuck you into buying an amp???
I have the DT250/250 and ran them against the DT250/80s and there was a clear difference. As long as you are always on power they are worth it, if you want to use them as a portable or without an amp then get the 80, they are fine.

lolno
m50x are some of the least comfortable closed headphones you can get

theyre fine if you put HM5's on them, but even then theyre outdone by MDR 7506 for cheaper
>>
>>58012958
theyre actually a better option if you dont want the mic

cloud cores just have a worse mic and non velour pads

but for the price difference you can just get HM5 pads and end up with a comfier headphone anyway.

I'd go with HM5 hybrids for them tho

>space
its a little box and an XLR cable. put it under your monitor or something.
if you dont have space for that consider moving out of your cardboard box

and you can get cheap interfaces like the UM2 and a BM800 [a 15 dollar microhphone that sounds better than a yeti]

USB microphones are a waste. Cheapest I'd go is a AT-2020 on special. IMO the 2020 sounds better than a yeti too, though you need a stand. Salvage an old lamp if youre homeless.

XLR microphones give better results since you have a multitude of controls
>>
>>58015904

>>
>>58017743
impedance means very little
i can drive 770 250 Ohm off my phone easily. They improve with an amp, but a lot of headphones actually do.

the 250 ohm variants are better than the 80
>>

DT880 or K702 or DT250
>>
>>58018596
Yes. They're a great closed headphone.
>>
>>58018857

The pic is their new flagship and it's around 4000€. The Anti-Mode Dual Core is what I've been eyeing up as it's readily available, does what I want and allows a nice set of extra features to customize the response afterwards within the unit.

>MiniDSP
Yeah good stuff and their affordable lower end gear integrates with REW natively.
>Behringer
I saw that in one anon's setup here but never checked what it was. If I could tuck it away it could be an option but rack mount gear doesn't go well with my living room.

It's true that many modern receivers have some kind of room response correction built in. Not sure about the quality of that and I don't think they allow much control over it. Also I have a stupid size constraint of the unit, it has to be below 14cm in height which excludes most receivers outright.

>XLR microphones give better results since you have a multitude of controls
This is the fundamental disassociation. A good engineer will benefit from a multitude of controls, the typical home user is usually better served by something done for them by an engineer. This is the same problem with cars, you go bolt on new shocks, springs, and bigger breaks thinking "ooh I'm so elite." and ruin the handling.

I'm researching and it sounds like the HM5 has rather weak bass. I wonder if I should be considering the HM9 instead, or if it goes too far. I havent really explored enough to say for sure but I think it is midbass/lower midrange that I like, so I guess I should be describing it as warm, and I definitely detest sibilance.
