I'm looking for a secure, small, up-to-date and fast GNU/Linux distro for online banking and online shopping and email management. (So for everything serious and important.)
I want to run it in a VM for using a browser, Thunderbird and password manager. What browser addons/other things should I pay attention for either?
What do you think?

Lubuntu for distro, keepassx for password manager. As for addons get ublock origin, "privacy settings" (as in the addon), Click&Clean, httpsbydefault, dont' remember more but you are okay with that.

Debian

Thanks. KeePassX is great, I'm using it already. Can I place the password file on Dropbox if the password is really good? Like 30-40 Upper and lower letters and numbers and special characters?
Would the MEGA cloud even be safer?

I've been a Debian user for a while but most of the help available online is geared towards Ubuntu users with popular DE which makes me kinda wanna switch

Why not go for Qubes OS and run it on physical hardware? You can't get more secure than that.
Honestly, just go *buntu.

Why do you put your passwords on "the cloud"? Jesus man.
Doesn't it make for more security risk when using an VM than just use some sandboxed browser?
