I will never understand the nostalgia for early versions of Windows. It had the slowness of Windows but with the stability of DOS. Windows NT was an actual operating system, and superior in every respect.

Because nostalgia is cancer where it makes some perfect mis-version of what you actually experienced because you only remember the good.

Pining for gray tiles is essentially the same as boomers with a garage full of 50 year old cars that haven't been started in 30.

Every 'enemy' of the United States is so far away that an invading force would take days to reach you and would be noticed from far away. You would have enough time to call up the reserves, deploy the Navy and mount a defense.

During the whole existence of the United States only Japan was able to land troops in Alaska and we all know how that went.

My only beef with 10.5/10.6 was how the "metal" theme was unnecessarily dark and broody, making it clash with the brightly colored buttons badly. The lighter "unified" look from Tiger (pic related) was nicer looking while accomplishing the same thing.

Mavericks is my personal favorite when it comes to UI themes, carrying the most refined form of Aqua to date. Yosemite and up take the flat thing way too far.

I think I've used every version of OS X since 10.1. And I used System 9 a bit (what a steaming pile that was.) I think 10.4 or 10.5 is about where they seemed to get all the major important features done, and after that it's kind of all been incremental or relatively less important changes. But I've also been waiting for ZFS since 10.4 or 10.5... Why the fuck are we still stuck on HFS+??
>>
BeOS
>>
>>57992010
Apple was whole hog on ZFS and had even distributed a preview to devs (you could format ZFS disks with Disk Utility!) but then Oracle bought Sun and refused the guarantee Apple that they wouldn't be sued for including ZFS in OS X. Oracle turned a nugget of gold into toxic waste as far as Apple Legal was concerned.

That's why we now have APFS coming up with 10.13. Presumably that's been in the works ever since Sun got bought.
>>

It's not that bad, but what really should have happened is that OS X shipped with APFS, or at least was in testing.
>>
>>57992193
You can test APFS if you're running Sierra right now, but it has problems and really isn't ready for primetime. Very very beta and nothing you'd want to do day to day work on (yet). If they'd made all Sierra installs run APFS by default they wouldn't had a disaster on their hands.
>>
>>57992214
>wouldn't
*would've
>>
>>57992214
I'm say that 10.0 should have shipped with a brand new file system (that I assume would have been called APFS) or at least the brand new file system should have been in the works. HFS+ should have never been anything other than a stopgap.
>>
>>57992246
Ahh ok, didn't catch that.

I see what you're saying, but I disagree. OS X 10.0 was still a mess in many respects, and most Mac users didn't switch to it full time until 10.2. The OS 9 to OS X user transition lasted well into the 10.4 era and would've dragged on even longer had Apple not switched from PPC to Intel and making booting or virtualizing OS 9 totally impossible. Even then, Carbon apps (e.g. OS 9 apps adjusted just enough to run on OS X too) didn't disappear until Apple made it clear that Carbon was going to be permanently stuck in 32-bit land.

All of this predicates an HFS+ environment because OS 9 and even Carbon stuff wouldn't play nicely with other filesystems; there were just too many assumptions that the host FS was HFS+. The soonest they could've made a different FS standard without pissing off a bunch of people was 10.7 or so, and the earliest feasible testing might've been around 10.5.
>>
>>57992334
You're not wrong, I was one of those still using OS9, but since when was Apple really all that worried about pissing off legacy users? At least it would have been for the better. 10.6 or 10.7 would have been a better time, as well. There's really no reason for HFS+ to lasted in OS X for 15 years.
>>
>>57992370
>all this talk about hfs+

This has never bothered me or caused any problems. It is simply a non-issue to the end user.

Don't get me wrong, I know the missing features and issues that are driving Apple to create APFS. And once we have Clones within the file system I will wonder how I lived without it.

But when /g/ has a fit about HFS+ I roll my eyes because it's not an issue unless you're managing a server. And Apple literally gave up the server market any way.
>>
>>57992643
I'm not bothered by HFS+, personally, but I don't think that it was the right way to go about it.
>>
>>57991713
>There's plenty they can still do, especially if they're running well-written resource-conscious software and not 50,000 ton electron-based text editors and the like.

This is what pisses me off about modern IT. My G5 hauls ass on everything except the web. The MacBook I just restored with SL can even handle the web OK, and would really be quick with a SSD.

There is NOTHING software wise that has appeared since SL that justifies the pressure on hardware. Not only should C2D and Core Duo Macs still be usable, but so should the G5s.

Yep. It's sometimes handy that mainstream operating systems do as much as they do these days but it'd be great if the Mac OS of 2016 was as lightweight as classic Mac OS was where many programs were heavier than the OS they ran on.

As for the web, it's overloaded, plain and simple. It does too much and as a result doesn't do anything particularly well. Its only redeeming quality is that it's available everywhere, but the price for that is that it's the hummer of the digital world, gulping down memory and occupying 10% of your 6700k to provide functionality that took a thousandth as much power a couple decades ago.
>>

I love my *nixes, but Win2k is probably my favorite operating system overall from the perspective of user experience, combining the apex classic interface and modernity of NT with the convenience and most of the compatibility of the 9x systems. 10.4 gets honorable mention too for some similar reasons, though I'm pretty partial to the shitty pin stripe spam in earlier versions.

Maybe if you boil it down to absurdly fundamental ideas, yes, but the way we design and expect web pages to act is very different from the static, mostly pure HTML/CSS content we were surfing in 2001. I'm losing my shit.
I'm not even using the OS directly and its causing me grief.

This shit turned off on me twice while I was using my Gentoo virtual machine on hyper-v.

It has re-enabled the reboot service twice now that I am aware of.

I went ahead and just deleted (not disabled) every service in the update folder for good measure.

I'm so happy I never had to deal with Windows during the last year and probably won't have to in the near future. Hackintosh at home, Linux at work. It's a truly liberating feeling.

Maybe it's just the tech-oriented bubble I'm in but it feels like hackintoshing is really starting to pick up. It's not hitting mainstream consumers any time soon but I'm seeing them popping up more and more lately.

the icons in Tiger were fucking shit compared to the literal perfection that were the Leopard icons.

It's your bubble most likely. I only know 3 guys at work who hackintosh, one of them ended up buying a real macbook because it was too much of a hassle for him.
It's not for everyone - you either have to build a box according to compatibility guides, or get lucky with your current config.

If you notice that some site stops working, then it's a shitty site and it doesn't deserve being browsed.

macOS by far. Don't meme it until you've tried it. Anyone that used it knows the difference. You can't explain it. It's just fucking Apple.

Used Windows my whole life. I mean... It's Windows... Meh. Eventually I grew up from video games... And then I got tired of having to do my regular Windows re-installations to make it fresh again. You know what I'm talking about and I got to thinking... I literally don't use the benefit of Windows, which is gaymes, so why am I cucking myself on purpose?

I absolutely hate the features of Windows. I never use them and they're just there... Like Internet Explorer, OneDrive, etc. I always have to fight with it and modify it for it to work right. Why not just go to Apple?

Tried Linux too... lol... At least it's great for servers.

Where do technology illiterate mactoddlers get the false impression that they or their fruity toddler toys are welcome much less belong on a technology board?
