Although I may not necessarily be retarded I need help with this one.

I'm doing my bachelors degree and in order to view my experimental data that I'm working on (Chromatograms + MS spectra [pic related]) I need to have a proper software installed.
Now, I don't expect you to suggest me other software than what I've been given, because that would require narrow and specialised knowledge, but the problem with the one I have (which I need help solving) is it supposedly runs on 32 bit OS (Windows only I presume) and I have Win 10 64bit.

TL;DR Could you please suggest me an easy to set up emulator that would allow me to use a program that would otherwise require 32bit environment on 64bit Win 10?

inb4; Use Linux or (input something similar here)! <- This is a no go.
Win 10 64bit that I have already installed on my PC is the only option. I may be too retarded to operate on anything else after all...

Any virtualization solution. Virtualbox, VMware...
>>
>>57984827
Looking into that asap, thanks.

If anyone comes up with any other solution please share.
>>
>>57984873
Download VirtualBox (free) and torrent a copy of Windows. Make sure you create a 32 bit VM in VirtualBox. Done.

Virtualization is much faster than emulation.

Try installing the software on 64bit windows first, though. A 64 bit OS can run 32bit programs just fine.
>>
>I may be too retarded to operate on anything else after all...
You may be too retarded to realize that 64-bit Windows can run 32-bit programs as well.
>>
>>57984940
And if there's problem with the windows version, you can use compatibily options.
>>
>>57984924
Dont forget the"tools" if you want full screen
>>
32bit programs should work on 64bit windows.
>>
>>57984940
I know that "Windows-on-Windows 64-bit" or WOW64 exists, but I have no idea how to use it. On the Microsoft site they said something about DLLs and that's the moment when I forfeited.
>>
>>57985111
That would mean the problem is with the software itself which leads me to believe that I'm fucked as I can only view my data at University, which is a pain in the ass.

Thanks anyway.
>>
>>57984797
Windows 64-bit has a built in "emulator" that runs like 99% of 32-bit apps.
Just install the program as any other software you normally would and it should work.

If not, if you have Pro version of Windows 10 you can activate Hyper-V (virtual machine thingy), install 32-bit version of windows in it, and run your program there. If you don't have pro version, get VirtualBox that does the same thing.

Also it might be a good idea to ask your Uni's IT support for help.
>>
>>57985148
are you really this fucking retarded
>>
>>57985148

are you like 60yo?
>>
>>57985148
Windows on Windows is transparent to the end user, you don't have to do anything to make the application work except for maybe change a compatibility setting.
>>
>>57984797
64-bit windows is already able to natively run 32-bit windows software, unless something has gone horribly wrong, or it's poorly designed software.

Basically, just try running it first. It should work. Only if it doesn't for some reason should you go through the trouble of installing VirtualBox and pirating a 32-bit version of Windows.
>>
>>57985148
You don't need to do anything to use WOW64. Like >>57987595 says, you just need to run the 32-bit program. Tons of popular programs (including Firefox, of all things) don't provide 64-bit Windows versions, as the 32-bit version is basically guaranteed to work correctly with no extra work.
>>
>>57987531
Although Windows on Windows is the 16bit version but the same thing applies to WOW64. On 64bit you cannot run 16bit applications though so that may be your actual problem if your application is supposed to work and doesn't.
>>
>>57984797
literally 99.999% of all windows 32 bit software works on 64 bit

it's the opposite that's a shit to do, since running 64 bit apps in 32 bit OS is basically impossible
>>
>>57987782
It's possible it's just that the performance would be awful so it's just not worth anyone's time to bother with it.

OP here. Thanks for clearing my confusion.
Y'all's explanation leads me to believe that I'm most likely fucked because the problem lies within the software itself so I'm bound to come to my lab to analyse data.

I will contact my thesis supervisor tho, and maybe she can somehow help, although she was the one to say that a 32bit OS is a must, because apparently this software is outdated and they use something else in most cases and for whatever reason they had problems with instaling it somewhere else or whatever.

Pic is a screencap of shit that disrupts instalation, but I cant make sense of it.

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time out of your life to help a dumbass.
Merry christmass /g/. OP out.
>>
>>57988009
did you use compatibility mode if that software is so old?
>>
>>57988009
Also make sure you're running it as administrator
>>
>>57988009
If you're having thatuch trouble with that particular program create a Virtual Machine with the exact same Operating System that they use in your university.

If you don't need to use the Internet, you can disable the access of the VM to the network so your environment is 100 % safe.

You can also access your regular folders inside the VM, as well as the USB ports, etc. So even if the VM is not a viable solution, learning how to make one may be handy in the future.
>>
>>57984797

OP, not being funny but real work in Windows gets done on Win 7 Pro. It's even got a free "XP mode" ready-made virtualization setup you can download from Microsoft. No need to mess about with the unlicensed botnet that's pirateXP. If you need a setup that's going to be stable for your work I'd seriously think about installing Windows 7 Pro.
>>
>VMs to run a 32-bit program on a 64-bit OS

Sure it's full of jokers in here.
>>
>>57984797
Use a virtual machine, either with a 32-bit version of Windows on it, or, if you really don't want to pay for another Windows disk, install a VM with a Linux distro running Wine (which supports the Win32 API even on a 64-bit machine).
>>
won't xcms online do what you need it to?
>>
>>57984940
>>57985111
I assumed they really meant a Win16 program, which would run on Win32 but NOT on Win64.

>>57988048
Compatability mode on Win64 does shit if the program is actually 16-bit, which going by what the OP says it probably is.

Windows on Windows 64 bit (WoW64) is a Windows subsystem designed as a compatibility layer between 32 bit Windows applications and 64 bit Windows operating systems.

You can run 32 bit Windows applications on 64 bit Windows systems without modification.

>>57984797
>Now, I don't expect you to suggest me other software than what I've been given, because that would require narrow and specialised knowledge
Heh, very arrogant and presumptuous of you, but I'll give it a go.

Would Vernier's Logger Pro do what you need? We used that for physics but I'm pretty sure it can do chromatography as well. In fact, that picture does look like how Logger Pro graph looks.
