So my computer just shat itself. The Mobo bricked and fried. Hence I need to rebuild my computer.

I'm looking for a budget oriented build (With Zen coming in Q1 2017 I dont see any reason to sink a lot of money in a new computer, just something to get the job done 'till the new stuff launches).

Hence I've been exploring the mid tier options. Namely the AMD Athlon II 860k At around 80€ it feels rather affordable.

But then, if you look at the Intel side. You could have an i5 2500k for about the same money, or with a bit more, an i7 2600k.

I'm also well aware that AMD's single core performance is weak as fuck.

However, the 860k the cheapest -new- Quad core on the market.

So the question is. Does anyone know if the 2500k can beat the 860k if both are running at around 4.2ghz? And moreover. does the 2600k offer any signifigant gains over the 2500k? Do I put myself at risk by opting for a platform that likely has no warranty, and have to buy used. Or do I opt for the newer stuff that I can buy brand spanking new, and with warranty?

Just get the i3 6100.

Solid performance, extremely close to an i5 6400 thanks to the gap in single core performance (3.7ghz dual core vs 2.7ghz quad core).

Only new AMD processors worth getting are the Athlon 845 or 880k. Or you can buy a used fx83•• series processor if you can find a good deal for it.

The i3 is still a better option thanks to the massively better single core performance, DDR4, and lower power consumption (less heat, less noise from cooler).

The i3 also trades blows with an fx83xx or fx63xx series processor and destroys the 860k you're looking at.

I did consider the i3 for a while. But the problem is that with budget -really- being an issue. (It's christmas for fuck's sakes. The amount of presents I've had to buy is unreal) so I cant afford to swap to a DDR4 based platform. At 130€ the i3 alone is over half of the budget I had intended to spend. Add to that a solid mobo, and a new kit of RAM and it goes over budget.

However. Would you recommend the 860k at all? Is it really that weak?

How does the 2500k fare against newer stuff? I've heard rumours that at 4.3ghz the Sandy Bridge chip is not that far off from Skylake, namely the 6400. But I've seen no concrete proof.

860k is pretty far behind the i3, but it's still a pretty decent processor considering it's a quad core at that price.

Try to bump up to an 880k though, if you can.
>>
You can buy an entry level skylake cpu for $50.

Hmm. From what I understood the 860k and the 880k are the same CPU, the latter just runs at a higher clockspeed?

Regardless. I'll give it a look.

What about the older i5? There's about 3 years between the Sandy Bridge and the Kaveri that the two respectable chips run. But with AMD's weak single core performance on every revision of Bulldozer (Which Kaveri is) I wonder if Sandy Bridge can outperform the weaker cores?

>>57983839
Yes. I can. But the question is, why would I? I already stated in the opening post that I'm going to opt for Zen once it launches. Buying anything new and current at this time would be pretty stupid.

Also
>Two cores and two threads

Atleast the i3 has two cores and four threads.
>>
>>57983922
Don't listen to that anon op, you'd want at least 4 threads in a modern pc.

Have you considered buying a used workstation with an Ivy bridge I5 in it?

They're pretty cheap, comes with the mobo, case, ram, HDD, etc.

If you want to add a respectable GPU you might want to upgrade the PSU though.

IDK about where you are, but here in aus I can buy a quad core Sandy/Ivy bridge workstation for the same price as an i5 6400 on its own.

I never once considered the G4400 (Nor the Haswell based G3258 either).

I have been looking at bundles off of Ebay. The pricing has been quite nice. But here the problem is choosing between the i5 and the i7, as they tend to be priced fairly well, with the i7 builds only a bit more expensive.

I've got a 650 watt PSU, and an R9 270x around here somewhere. It'll make for a passable substitute before I upgrade.
>>
>>57984012
The i7 will definitely perform better, if only slightly more expensive then get that.

You can also add your old ram and HDD to the workstation so don't worry if it's something stupid like 4GB ram 250GB HDD.
>>
>>57984172
Ah shit. Now that you mention RAM... Will I be able to use my current modules on the 1155 platform? I've heard that Intel doesnt officially support any higher than 1333mhz (Though some manufacturers have a bios setting to enable 1600mhz) whereas my sticks are 1866mhz modules. Do I need to downclock the RAM first? Will it fuck up the timings? Or will the RAM just operate at the max frequency supported by the mobo?
>>
>>57984255
Yeah, if it's faster they'll just slow down to a supported speed.
>>
>>57984255
Okay good.

Cheers!
