Say what you want, but Sandy Bridge definitely doesn't run hot in my X220.
When I completely reinstalled Gentoo a year ago, it compiled all my stuff for around 15 hours while never exceeding 85°C and never throttling below its maximum two core turbo.
It obviously ran with -j5 too.

Far from it, it's just a very good durable laptop with excellent cooling. A poor man would build an AM1/FM2+ build for the same price as a used T420.

Why not just get the 1080p xps 15? The bezel makes it about the size of a 13 inch laptop and you get a decent gpu and 16 gb of ram.

With this $400 build you can not only upgrade your shit but everything will run whisper quiet and ridiculously fast. I got the same A10 as in this build + silent case fans + hyper 212 cooler and I can't fucking hear it even when I'm doing video encoding. When I look at the AMD overdrive program I still have 30C° thermal margin even doing video encoding.

I'm running this A10 at a constant 3.8 GHz with 1.4v of juice flowing through it with all AMD energy saving shit turned off.
