Based Jim "Pussy Destroyer" Keller

Zen is solid. its a new design in the post finFET era thats gonna match the Corei7 on a smaller node. All they have to do is be cheaper per core and offer HT/unlocked Multis by default with cheaper motherboards and they win.

And zen+ on 7nmFF will potentially surpass intel unless they through their architecture out and have some brand new shit we dont know about.

Intel is played out they have noe more IPC gains to squeeze out of their arch and rely entirely on new nodes and better binning.

AMD set the target at 40% IPC gain over Piledriver. So that's all they have to do for it to be a success. Luckily zen hasn't been overhyped to the extent that Fury was. So expectations are where they should lie.

It's the same thing with Samshit, Novideo, Razer etc.
>>
>>57981326

Consumer gayming x86 market is tiny.

Intel makes it money from corporate deals. Places like AWS buying them 10's of thousands of CPUs for their datacenters for example. Intel has better RMA support and connections/leads in that world now. Going to be tough for AMD.

"8-Core, 16-Thread"

So, are they adopting Intel's bullshit Hyper-Threading nomenclature to give the false impression of additional processors?

What's the deal with this "threads" bullshit. Hyper-Threading are just virtual "threads" that the CPU then parallelizes certain operations of. It's a statistical increase in speed, not a doubling as you'd get with an additional core.

Uh. It's a fucking temperature sensor. They're doing what absolutely everyone does, except they're going to cite performance numbers from absurdly cooled conditions.
>>
>>57985594

I understand threads. I understand multithreading. I understand that Intel has cultivated the misunderstanding that "thread" == "core" for marketing purposes.

I don't understand why AMD is adopting this.
>>
>>57985652
because SMT is actually good? What are you getting at here?
>>
>botnet prefetch
>>
>>57985675

"threads" != "core"

It's bullshit that's been used for years by Intel to create the false impression that their four core CPUs are equivalent to an 8 core CPU. They aren't.

I suspect you don't understand what I wrote when I said:

> Hyper-Threading are just virtual "threads" that the CPU then parallelizes certain operations of. It's a statistical increase in speed, not a doubling as you'd get with an additional core.
>>

Done with this obnoxiously slow video. I'm going back to watching The Walking Dead, because this video is the only thing slower than TWD.

>>
>>57985595
Nope
Its measuring thermal margin, and a temp sensor isn't involved. Its an evolution of what they've already been doing for years.
Sensing paths around the chip monitor power consumption and leakage characteristics in real time. It uses these figures and calculates how hot every area of the chip is using the modeled thermal properties of silicon and the metal layers in the back end.

Temp sensors are unreliable and far too localized to be useful. Using a temp sensor you could have one die area be 100c while the sensor in another area only reads 90c. The potential disparity is great enough that you could experience system instability while your readings show you within safe margins.

This is all based around the simple fact that transistor leakage varies based on temp, this behavior is easy to model, and incredibly predictable in any circumstance.
It is inherently far more accurate than the temp probe circuits we make.

Look at the after hours trading. There are firms selling AMD stocks in their millions. This doesn't bode well for tomorrow morning.

Look, I was on the AMD gravy train until a few months ago. I was hoping to jump back until I realized that AMD is still not a compelling option in the market that they're trying to re-enter. Tell me, why would you switch to AMD's products if you've already spent millions, if not billions, on products from Intel who have provided the support you asked for and expected to run your business? For marginal and dubious gains in power efficiency (which, by the way, is not standardized or regulated by any organization)? For slightly better per core performance? Is that really worth destroying a long term and profitable relationship with a company that has a proven track record of delivering excellent product support? Is that really worth the expensive and time consuming phase out of Intel hardware for a brand new product that won't have the level of support Intel provided for at least the first few quarters?

After hours trading only has AMD down 0.15.
You're the most ignorant and blatantly retarded FUD spreading shill I have ever seen.

Prove you're actually 18 or older. I double dog dare you.
>>
>>57989160
It's not that Intel has been providing stellar product support, but they've built up a reputation for providing support when it is needed and working with clients to get their products up and running in the timeliest manner possible. Intel has both the capital and the manpower to devote entirely on their enterprise and OEM clients.
Do you honestly think that AMD will be able to manage the same sort of support with barely a 10th of the staffing and budget? And bear in mind that this is a brand new family of products in its first generation.

Also, why would any OEM or enterprise client switch back to AMD at this point in the game? Intel has been providing them with all the things they've needed thus far. AMD has only just reached Intel's hardware capability, so what's stopping Intel from dropping prices or other cost-reduction strategies to keep their customers from leaving? And why would their customers even leave in the first place? Because AMD's CPU is now barely a percent better?
>>

Check their job listings. They're not in any hurry to hire staffers for their enterprise clients. There are also no news of companies or corporations signing onto AMD's product and support, just rumors and interests. There is nothing solid or written on contract yet. Normally, Intel has this stuff set in stone months before their new product generation is released. AMD has not done so yet. Telling.

>>57989353
Last quarter, AMD has lost a few thousand people on their work force. If they had anything concrete by now, they should be mass hiring in the thousands, yet AMD themselves stated to their investors that they have no plans to exceed their normal employment milestones from last year. That means that they'll still be a 10th of the size of Intel serving a host of new customers for a brand new product that is not fully optimized, and won't be for months (this is a fact, not conjecture).
>>
>>57989410
>amd need thousands of new employees right now because they're going to completely subsume intel's enterprise market overnight, even though they'll get no customers because of intel's """""reputation""""" for """""excellent""""" support, even though intel has not been providing stellar product support

You know he left AMD more than a year ago, right ?

>Zen is success -> praise Keller
>Zen is a failure -> blame the CEO instead

It has eight integer cores, retard.
>>
>>57993129
It has 4 cores and 8 threads.
>>
>>57993319
No, it has 8 integer cores and 4 FPU units, integer workloads scale linearly between the 8 integer cores provided they're well parallelized
If it had 8 threads and 4 cores then workloads wouldn't scale linearly

AMD hired Keller just to design Zen.
I don't think anyone would blame the CEO if it failed.

In Ryzen it literally uses machine learning.

> tfw Autopilot is not "automatic"
> tfw people can't even comprehend what the function does

It's literally a lane-assist+, which requires your attention 100% of the time.

> b-b-but why use it then?!
You don't have to, it's in the fucking car for no extra charge. And you can't get a better electric car that has the same mileage/specs.

So what was this 6 thing?
When will we get any data on this thing?
Besides the usual paper launch, paper benchmark and shit by AMD that is useless?

CES 2017 more info

Oh. Neat.
Though I just want normal reviews by now, these presentations are useless. On paper it sounds very cool, but I want real world stats.

Is it 50% faster in single core than Intel for the same or less price? I AM SOLD.

Not? Fuck off.

Drop prices on locked cpus and put out more k cpus at a competitive price to similarly performing amd processors. If it's not worth putting out locked cpus at the lower price point they'll drop them all together.

It's all economics. If Zen isn't competitive nothing changes. If it is then it's all the same story as always when a competitor enters the market with a competitive product. The supply for a give price increases and the supply and demand curves intersect at a lower price. I don't know if I'll be interested in AMD after Zen hits but I hope it is good. If it's good, it will drive down my costs either way.

Not in processors with out of order execution. If the thread that has the real core has two integer operations in the pipeline that don't have dependency on each other they get the integer units. The thread that gets the bull shit HT virtual cpu gets what's left over. So if a bunch of dependencies pop up or there's a stall from a cache miss or something the HT thread gets executed. The real CPU thread always gets the priority on execution units. The HT thread gets the left overs. Ends up being around a 10-25% boost depending on what's being run.

My little 3k line c++ project compile times as an example:
make 10.664s +57%
make -j 2 6.794s 0
make -j 4 5.623s -17.2%
make -j 5 5.589s -17.7%

That's a 2c4t processor. I haven't looked at the code for the compiler a lot but I don't think there's a significant amount floating point arithmetic going on.

30% faster in well-threaded tasks is pretty good considering the die-area it takes.
>>
>>57994478
if it was 50% faster than an intel then intel would have died like literally now...
its 50 to 55% better on ipc than the excavator which is roughly at the 6900k area as we saw

Are we bringing the "Turbo Button" on 386 cases like days of yore? I can't wait!
