What will SICP tell me that The Pragmatic Programmer won't?

I did read some fragments of this book for a course on declarative programming, but quite honestly Scheme and functional programming doesn't convince me all that much.
I'd rather stick to imperative procedural programming in the C language.
This book seems quite pretentious actually.

SICP isn't supposed to convince you about anything regarding function programming.

In fact chapter 1 it pretty much outlines how Tree Recursion is terrible and iterative recursive methods are far better because they're stateful

/g/ has told me that SICP is an outdated meme book and I've been hesitant on possibly wasting my time reading it.

I thought it says the opposite in chapter 1... How tree recursion is much easier, more powerful and faster.
