Does anyone here work in programming/web development/software development/technical writing/etc. ?
Just wondering about the field and what the best road into the industry is.

write something valuable (make a startup)
or get hired by a small company (if you have the skills, and will accept very little pay)
or go to school for it, and make your options more realistic.
it's really not that complicated dude.
Id say going to school for CS or SE, and learning how program a bit outside of school out of geniune interest for it. Perhaps an internship, or an apprenticeship. A cert or two. Solid soft skills, clean, polite, well groomed etc. Oh and these skills should be in line for what employers demand for the positions youre looking at.
I dont even have a job as a programmer, just in IT with a bit of coding. But this shit is just common sense.

So would you say jumping into a degree in computer science is a solid way to go? The city I'm in isn't a very technically driven industry, so does location a factor in being successful? How easy is it to move somewhere else and get a job? All the sites say there is a high employment rate...

get some python knowledge and don't be afraid to fuck around in C.
Fucking bucky and his youtube videos will get you a good foundation of the programming syntax.
