I would love a local version of DDG that just implements the !bang redirects so I can type “!bang foo” into my browser and end up on the relevant search engine without having to go through a central metaserver / spyware site like duckduckgo

1. I don't use firefox
2. DDG has hundreds of bangs which are updated and maintained regularly. If you're telling me to do all that work by hand in my browser, you're delusional
3. Firefox's keyword stuff still has downsides, like not being able to type the !bang after the search term

Unless you're telling me there's something like an addon which will add all of the hundreds of DDG bangs as search keywords to firefox, it's not really answering the question at all.

And running a local search engine would have the benefit of being cross-browser

I doubt you can cite a hundred bangs from memory. I'm pretty sure you follow the pattern need something -> search for it -> use it. Now you just have to add "right click and add keyword" to the "search for it" part.

Websites don't change their API every month. I've been using this feature for years and never had to update a single keyword. Everything still works.

Use searx then. You can use it both locally and online and it has bangs. If you want to add some you can just contribute to the github repo.

I did for a while but it didn't handle bangs as well as DDG did. My issue is still open on github.
