My Asus Radeon HD 7970 has been declining in performance and crashing/overheating with even the lightest loads for quite some time. Took the bait and bought it cheaply from eBay used and without warranty. Not happening again.

Now I'm thinking of switching to Nvidia and, with about $400 to spend, I'm trying to find the sweet spot, the best deal of price vs performance. I'll also consider Radeon cards if you'd recommend me one since I haven't regretted a purchase that /g/ recommended yet. My current front-runner is the GTX 1060 with 6 GB Vram. Should I?

Made a spreadsheet with various local shops and prices in euros. Trying to find the sweet spot

maybe remove the heat sink/fan and apply new thermal compound ?
>>

480 is better than a 1060 for DX12 and they are about the same cash.

1070 blows both out of the water but will top out your budget.
>>
$400 is 1070 range, senpai. http://pcpartpicker.com/products/video-card/#c=369&sort=a8&page=1

>Buys faulty 5 year old GPU on ebay
>THIS IS AMD'S FAULT REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

You probably need to replace the ancient thermal pads\paste.

The RX 480 is the better dx12/Vulkan GPU by far.
>>
>>57972912
Already replaced the thermal paste 3 times.

Now one of the screws has worn out and wont unscrew itself so taking off the cooler is now impossible. I realize I fucked up by getting a used gpu from ebay - that's why I am willing to get something with lower specs such as a 1060 but brand new and with warranty.
>>
>>57972909
Well then I'd recommend a 8GB 480 if you can find them cheaper or close to the same price. If you can't, a 6GB 1060 is your best bet.
>>
>>57973009
I can find the GTX 1060 6GB and the RX 480 8 GB at about the same price. RX has higher VRAM but lower clockspeed at 1100 Mhz core while GTX 1060 has 1500 MHz core speed. Same warranty.
>>
>>57973146
So it boils down to drivers and overclocking capability?
>>
>>57973146
clock speed is a joke. Doesn't mean too much when the architecture is so different.
>>
I'd save a bit more money and get the 1070.
You'll get hell of a lot more mileage out of that one.
>>
>>57973146
Comparing clock speeds across completely different architectures is dumb AF.
>>
>>57973172
>>57973418
All right, then. Which architecture is more efficient, /g/?

No not really. It is like 30% faster in DX11 and 10 to 15% faster in DX12/Vulkan which isn't going to let you keep the card significantly longer and cost almost twice as much.
>>
>>57973431
Not really relevant considering these cards are all roughly in the same power envelope.
>>
>>57973519

It's not twice as expensive, more like ~40% more expensive, and that price scales up pretty nicely with the performance.
Not sure where you got the numbers, but here's the userbenchmark between the two.

http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1070/3639vs3609

I think it's worth saving a bit more and getting the better card in this case.

>Not sure where you got the numbers

Actual games not synthetics. Things scale better in synthetics than they do in the real world. In a Nvidia best case scenario (dx11 gameworks) the 1070 is only 25% faster than the RX 480.

At this point there is no better bang for the buck.
An R9 Fury for $260 is pretty amazing in terms of price/performance.
