Why don't they put this kind of malevolent effort into running a legit business or working somewhere where these talents would be appreciated, like Apple?

Misguided kids.

I don't get this. You would have to be quite smart and experienced to write practical ransomware from scratch. What is the motivation of the person or team who made this? Couldn't they have gotten real, legit jobs with these skills?
>>

>Transmission’s official website was compromised
>infected Transmission installers were signed with a legitimate certificate
Literally nothing can protect you from that.
>>
>>57966270
A lot of these ransomware makers might be from third world countries where employment might be hard to find and they don't have the means to immigrate somewhere better.
>>
>>57966206
Not the guy you're responding to, but they can take the financial risk all they want. The problem is that I want my fair share of the money, which means I should be getting a minimum of 75% of the profit because I'm the one who developed the object in question, not the guy taking financial risk. If I wanted to take those sorts of risks, I would have done it if I had the money, but I didn't, which is why I'm working for someone who will always be less intelligent and capable than me: because that person somehow managed to get money to even risk in the first place, which means he's either rich or lucky.
>>
>>57966313
Then why don't you assume the risk yourself, start your own business, get a loan, develop your own product, and get 100%?
>>
>>57965732
It's easier to take advantage of retards and old people who don't know any better.

Ransomware like this is so easy to deal with if you keep a backup.

Doesn't even need to be a full backup, just backup some large files offsite, the larger the better.

If this ever happens to you, find those large files you backed up and then find the encrypted version of that same large file. There are programs that will compare the two files and work through it to figure out the encryption key. Which program you use to decrypt will depend on the method of encryption used.

This only works if the files are identical, but if you do it right, you've now got the encryption key and you can go save the rest of your files without issue.

But what if they both infect 2 more "friends"
>>
>>57966344
Sounds exactly like Apple's business model.
>>
>>57966385
How does that work? Does ransome ware encrypt every file individually?
>>
>>57966419
Yes but since you know they're identical files it's a fairly quick process.

The issue is newer ransomware encrypts each file with a new encryption key. So if this is the case, the only option is a full backup, at which point just nuke the infected drive and start over with your backup.
>>
>>57966456
See
>>57966459

New ransomware will encrypt files individually so this method becomes useless.

All depends what type of ransomware it is.

>>
>>57966903
I still fear that something like that might happen.
>>
>>57966886
I only have to memorize like page's worth (front and back) every semester.

The MCAT is something that requires intense critical thinking skills under a fast pace and high pressure. You would know if you weren't so ignorant and could think critically, but you can't because you still have this biased view that the field of medicine is 99% memorization. I agree that most doctors are bad, but the best doctors out there will always be smarter than you and anybody you know.

>>
>>57966984
My dad took the MCATs and his GRE for physics.

He got top marks on both, but since he wanted to study astrophysics, he chose that instead.
>>
>>57966984
I'm pretty sure they're equally as smart, if not smarter.

Put both of them through the same formal training and see who does better than the other when they have their fields flipped.

I can tell you for a fact that my first anatomy and physiology class in college was much more difficult than my first quantum physics course. It was even more difficult than calc 1,2, and 3, and diff. eq and linear algebra combined.
>>
>>57966944
How do you know if that guy isn't friends with someone like hawking? Pretty sure hawking is "smarter"
>>
>>57967018
>my first anatomy and physiology class in college was much more difficult than my first quantum physics course
you're full of shit.

I took anatomy and physiology in college and it was dead fucking simple for anyone who had Biology in highschool. Only difference was more indepth discussion on the same concepts and more advanced dissections and such.

Might be a bit of different strokes for different folks, but the maths for quantum physics for MOST people is going to be FAR harder than memorizing anatomical facts.
>>
>>57967018
sure maybe a doctor could learn the basics of math/physics easier than a mathematician could memorize all of those facts.

in order to actually innovate in those fields it is much more difficult. can you imagine what's going through hawking's head all day long? or even Mochizuki? innovation in medicine is just trial and error.
>>
>>57967121
>innovation in medicine is just trial and error.

uh
inventing new math theories and algorithms is "just" trial and error too.

the fuck is wrong with you?
>>
>>57966726

>>
>>57967134

>>
>>57967047
I've gotten As in all of my math courses and math-based science courses. Memorizing things for anatomy was easy as pie, but actually understanding the physiology was incredibly difficult. Thankfully my professor helped clear up concepts I didn't quite understand after reading the textbook.

>>57967121
It's very difficult to have a trial-and-error-based approached in medicine because human lives are at stake.

You're not risking anything by doing trial and error in physics because you're not really risking anybody's life. It's all theoretical, and then you can do small labs in isolated environments. In medicine though? Good luck finding a willing test subject, and good luck getting enough people to think your experiment is even ethical in the first place.

Something goes wrong? Say goodbye to your career, even if you are the best doctor in the world.
>>
>>57966708
You're an idiot, most of the billionares on shark tank started with little to nothing.

Also being smarter than 99% of people on a board devoted to nip cartoons is nothing to be proud of, but you're too stupid to have realized that anyway.

>my MCAT
Boy, what a prententious fag. Did your mother wipe your asshole until you moved out of her basement?
>>
>>57967384
Understanding physiology is dead easy. It's just a a system with multiple paths, some feedback, a bunch of inputs and some outputs.

I took some second and third year A&P courses in uni for fun and squashed the bio and kinesiology majors. Then again, I majored in mechanical engineering so the thought processes were quite similar.

Don't equate your personal experience to the difficulty of a profession. Different strokes for different folks.

Ransomware stealthy installs onto your backup external hard drive when you plug it in to backup files. You are unaware until it is too late. Main and backup files are ransomwared.
>>
>>57969212
This. And while I'm sure many of us can think of interesting secure solutions to this, ransomware doesn't need to get everyone. If it can infect the main system and one layer of simple backups, that's 99% of everyone including "tech savvy" people.
>>
I still wonder how they get away with this. there must be a money trail no matter how they do it.

No. Everything goes through the NAS.

Even if the files on the NAS get encrypted, the files on the backup will be fine because there is no way for my main to access the backup directly.
And my backups are done by the root user, so it would require the malware to get onto my NAS and gain root privileges to encrypt the backups.
And my backup drive is only connected when I am carrying out the backup, which is once a week.
