If you're installing via the device, you'll need about twice the space required by the app. So if you want to install a 500MB app, have 1GB free for it to download and unpack.
OS updates, I'm not sure. I think they may have changed things recently so you don't need to download the whole update at once.

I dont know dog, everybody knows the gb are wayyy smaller compared to the iPhone 7. I've even heard they shrink down as time pass. Plus, you dont want to loose framerate. My sister told me that if you go down 3gb, one of the icon rows disappear and never come back.
