DEVICE TO BE REMOTELY BRICKED BY MANUFACTURE IT'S FUCKING OVER JUST YOU WAIT INTEL WILL DO THIS SOON ENOUGH

http://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/mobile-phones/next-update-will-brick-every-galaxy-note-7-left-in-the-wild-as-samsung-acts-to-stop-exploding-phones/news-story/fbcf428c7f181582d39a32d71b3f38bb

RMS warned us...
>>
>>57954437
Good. Idiots shouldn't be allowed to present a risk to those around them. They have been given many opportunities to return the devices, including financial incentives. I hope they finally do the right thing.

>Its sets a dangerous precedent for the industry
You're absolutely right, its[sic] does. They shouldn't have waited so long, they're probably being held liable for any damages.
>>
>preventing the phones from charging or working as mobile devices
But it can still be used as a explosive device?
>>
>>57954737
mein neger
>>
>>57954437
people were repeatedly told to RMA the devices multiple times. If i had purchased that grenade I would've been the first in line to exchange it for a new phone, luckily i have half a brain and didn't bother with chingsung in the first place
>>
>>57954941
>half a brain

unfortunately that's all i have tho
>>
>>57954941
What the are actual chances of it exploding?

Probably less than one in 100.000?
With millions sold that's still an issue, but I would risk it as long as it's less than 1% chance of exploding.
>>
>>57954982
the fact you even remotely consider that being ok is a serious problem and shows how careless consumers really are... If there were a product that could be talked about, and the words 'possibly exploding' are mentioned in the same breath as the name of the product, I'm turning 360 degrees and walking away.

i am ok with this
>>

thinkpads use Intel processors, thus are more likely to be bricked - see Intel Management Engine
>>
>>57955316
there are some that have cpus pre-dating intel ME
>>
>>57955316

correcting myself: just as likely to be bricked
>>
>>57954623
It does, but the problem with the Note is that it puts you at risk just as much as everyone around you. What if it catches fire on a plane?

Literally any devices can be bricked if a manufacturer decides to push out software that can brick it.

>Give it back before it hurts you, you can have another phone or your money money back, please give it back before you get hurt by it, we will have no choice but to destroy it from here before you or someone else gets hurt, please return it so we can give your money back...

Sounds like the only thing to do really, they cant afford letting it go and later having even more trouble because some idiot got hurt by it.
Besides, we have recalls for everything, turning something useless to ensure recall works only opens a precedent for doing it again in similar cases, it's a pretty different thing to do it because "hey, fuck you, buy a new one, your will shut down in 5, 4, 3..."
>>
>>57955402

when was the last time this happened?
>>
>>57955267
idk who that was, but I don't see any recent make/model of car spontaneously combusting, else I wouldn't own that car either. Your reply doesnt make sense lol

Amd too? I cant find any comprehensive list on this.

Whats the solution considering that flos hardware tends to be garbage
>>
>>57955657
Well, that was back in 2001, and if we want to get technical the "small incremental updates" were triggers for a hack which bricked the modified cards. The difference is that with this Samsung case, they're going to disable the phones of users that didn't do anything wrong or illegal, just ignored a consumer product recall.

Sure, it may set a precedent but let's not kid ourselves here that these are practically bombs.

The article even states that Samsung made financial incentives for people to turn in their Note 7s. But apparently people are retarded.

its illegal to have on on a plane now
any plane

EVEN SHIPPING AND MILITARY AIRCRAFT

its unironically easier to sneak a stick of TNT onto an airplane than it is a galaxy

you guys are fucking retarded
>>
>>57955820
Yeah, it is a bad precedent since its not like they are only bricking rooted phones. But aren't the Note 7s now blocked from being used on cell networks? Aren't they now essentially just a media device.

You are a fucking moron. Corporations don't need precedent to do whatever they please. And anyway, any precedent set by this would be relevant only to other phone-IEDs.

I think he is referring to legal precedent and even then that'd be a false premise because corporations don't decide upon legal precedent.

intel has the managament engine, amd has an equivalent, the psp.

As far as I know, you can disable that stuff in older versions of amd and intel (for intel it's
core 2 or earlier), where it comes in physically different locations.

>What the are actual chances of it exploding?
From what I've read, it's almost inevitable with the Samsung batteries. LG batteries accounted for roughly 30% of devices so that leaves you with a 70%chance that it's going to blow up at some point.

I'd call that grounds for deactivation, wouldn't you?
>>
>>57955812
the rule thumb is that intel cpus pre-2008 (i think) are safe from HW backdoors

for AMD it's pre-2013.
