I really wanted to like the FX chips. I upgraded from a Phenom II to an FX. More cores, higher clock speed and same tdp. Sounds good right? Wrong. Problem is that due to FX chip design older games ran like shit. all jerky, laggy. Like It was 1999/2000 all over again back when the games were brand new and my pc at the time needed an upgrade. After I tried all the tricks/hacks for the games and no luck I said fuck it and dropped my Phenom II x4 955 back in, Everything is running fine now. Sometimes newer ain't always better.

if you really plan on jewing him with an amd cpu at least get the bristol ridge platform so he can throw out that piece of shit fx processor in a month

I second this. You don't want to downgrade the GPU too much for something that likely won't even be the source of a bottleneck anyways.

If it's for xmas just get a cheap skylake i3 and an rx 470. FX CPUs are garbage.

Ayyyy i have basically that same build i put together like 4 years ago except a 4100 series fx.

I just bought an 8300 and a fury on black friday and decided to see how much of an improvement the fury would be over my 7870 for fun and i can tell you the cpu is nowhere near as much of a bottleneck as people on /g/ seem to claim.
I ran a few benchmarks and at best my set up was like 5-10 fps behind i7 benchmark set ups in gta v, metro last light, and witcher 2.
In fact ive been playing witcher 2 at 4k ultra at 60fps the past couple days.
Again this is with the 4100 at 4.2ghz. I havent seapped in the 8320 yet since i dont have thermal paste on hand and forgot to order some like an idiot.
I seriously doubt it will bottleneck something like a 470 all that much in the vast majority of cases.
Im sure a better cpu would maintain a more consistent framerate, but if this is a build for a 13 year old i doubt hell give a shit about a little screen tearing.

Eh, fanboy stuff is kinda dumb, 500 bucks gaming pc for a 13 yearold also is kinda silly. I guess i got 5 years off of a phenom ii x6, which was my 13 year old memestation. Id just buy him a good cpu and small ssd, because getting your mother to buy a motherboard and cpu is gonna be alot more difficult then swapping gpus later down the line and that kid probably wont have a job for a good 3 years.

no joke, find a pc on the side of the road and use that CPU. You'll most likely find an AMD Phenom CPU which work pretty damn well and you can get a good cooler and motherboard with the cost difference
