Most HDDs will last for years, even decades, if treated properly. Statistically the HDDs that fail usually do so early on, so if an HDD have survived the first few years, it'll likely keep running until it becomes obsolete. I have two 80GB and a 120GB HDD that are 12 and 10 years old at this point.
MTBF for HDDs are > 1 million hrs.
So no, you can fill it and empty it over and over and over with no problems at all.
