Technically my "first" was an ATI Rage 128 on my mom's old PC she handed me down, but the first one I actually bought was a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4850.

Paid about $250 for it back in 2008 and I still have it in the original build which is now used to bring to LAN parties as an auxiliary PC to run srcds and emulators.

So it went:
>ATI Rage 128 by technicality
>Pentium 4 embedded graphics on an old laptop, again handmedown
>Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4850 pic related first actual "purchased" card
>Sapphire AMD R9 270X Vapor X

Well the computer we had growing up had some nvidia card in it from around 2002. It was probably a cheap card knowing my father. The funny thing is he installed the card but never plugged the vga cable into the card. So all of those years the computer was still using the intergrated graphics.

My first was an ATi Radeon 9800. It was awesome and stayed relevant for an absurdly long time, as did the Sempron it was paired with. I was very disappointed when AMD decided to skip the HD 9000 series in favour of their r naming. I was looking forward to buying a HD 9800.

>>57950828
You do know that a GPU is a made up marketing term by nvidia which has a specific definition? One of the requirements for a device to qualify as a GPU is hardware T&L. None of the cards in question support HW T&L.

Before Nvidia (and AMD) started creating GPUs, we called the device a video card. Or 3D accelerator, as was the case with the early Voodoo products that also required a video card that could do 2d to work.

Hardware T&L is simply arbitrary. A GPU only has to accelerate or process calls and manipulate memory specifically to display graphics.

Actually Nvidia specified that something is a "GPU" only when it supports hardware T&L and is capable of over 10 million polygons per second.

They had to add the arbitrary polygon count because the N64's GPU would actually have qualified as the first "GPU" as it supported hardware T&L well before GeForce 256 did.

It doesn't matter what they make up because hardware vertex acceleration isn't required to classify a Graphics Processing Unit.

I was making the point about how arbitrary the term "GPU" is as defined by Nvidia. Way to go your reading comprehension!

Any device that processes graphics is a GPU. I've even heard that the PS1's graphics chip was internally referred to as a GPU during development in the early 90s and that sure as fuck didn't do vertex acceleration.

What it ended up being was as fast as a Voodoo 1 with slightly better image quality. At least it wasn't very expensive.

GTS 450 was my first real GPU, it's still tucked away in my closet in it's box, replaced it because it was getting too warm, might dig it up, reapply some fresh paste, and see what I can do with it.

My first actual GPU was some passive-cooled AGP card with 128mb VRAM from Nvidia, no idea what card it was.

I don'the care about Nvidia pr muppets like you. A video card that processes graphics is a Graphics Processing Unit. My Voodoo3 did that and so did my ATI Rage 128 and a bunch of other cards.

GPU moniker is usually reserved for cards which were progammable to a certain degree - first of which in consumer market was, AFAIR GeForce 256. But in all honesty, the first real GPU with vertex and pixel shader progammability was GeForce 3.

Earlier cards were simple hardware accelerators of a fixed rendering pipeline.

In the most strict definition, a GPU is a card which allows to run arbitrary CUDA/OpenCL code - essentially a consumer level vertex processor. This was later 'extended' to also mean pixel/vertex shader capable cards - so everything up to Geforce 3 counts as a GPU. Nowadays it just means 'graphics card' - just like in the good old days 'VGA' meant any card, not just the originator model by IBM.

ATI Rage 128

I remember, I was a kid like 8 years old, but I was already in charge of making decisions around the PC
and we were planning to build a new one

and I consulted friends in school and magazines and internet at grandpas work, and riva TNT2 was the good choice

I went to ski trip with my class and when I returned we had ati rage 128
I remember how I threw a hissy fit, still feel ashamed about it
turned out the card was great, price/performance wise
and it worked forever, it did not die, it kept on rolling..

another similar card that I remember was 3870, really beast performance for amazing price, its fan died after 3 years, zip tied new one and the card worked and was replaced not because of failure, but because of replacing it... I think last year... its a card from 2007

I still have mine, not sure if it still runs though, it's been sitting naked in a clusterfuck of retired hardware for a while, plus I don't have a AGP mobo, last one fried while overclocking a P3.

A GeForce 4 MX440.
Replaced it after I realized it was intentionally gimped out of Shader Model 2.0 and bought a Radeon 9600 so I could play Halo PC with specular highlights and bumpmapping.

Technically I had a Rage 128 before that but not in a PC I built.

ATI All-in-Wonder 9600 with Athlon 3200+ - literally only got it to watch TV on my computer, set it up and then didn't care about it. The mobo I built the computer with broke, then I got a new one and I can't remember why but I had to use integrated graphics for a while. Did absolutely no gaming with it, ironically.

Used a 15" Core 2 Duo MBP for a while, which I think had a GT (GTX?) 8800M (maybe 8600M?). Only played a Tetris clone and TF2 for a free weekend. The laptop broke a few years later.

Was forced to use an early 2000's laptop for a year or two. Never knew what kind of processor it had, just that it was garbage and slow.

Then got a Pentium 860 with an HD 7770. Mostly played TF2. Good stuff.

Quickly upgraded to an i5 3570k and a 760, which I am currently using. Has been rock-solid, if slow. Soon getting a 1060 for Chrisumasu, which I'm looking forward to, as the 760 is showing its age.

Like it mattered when the only reason I purchased it was because I needed a PCIe GPU

My nigga. This card and I had some good times together. Paired together nicely with the AMD Athlon 64 I had at the time. Man I miss that rig.

Did the same thing, wasn't much of a panic. The 970 works fine for 1080p/1200p.
The reason I got the 1070 was a new 1440p display.

The 7970 died while under warranty so they sent a free 380x as a replacement. I didn't willingly upgrade to it because I know it's basically the same card.
