>How this ideological struggle plays out remains to be seen. But, given the ruthless success of capitalism, a betting man wouldn't put his money on a guy like Berners-Lee, who isn't in this for money. When his invention went live in Geneva all those years ago, he didn't envisage his open web would become a system of semi-closed platforms that restrict access to their users. Nor did he envisage that his invention would facilitate surveillance on a scale beyond the imaginings of Orwell. At its inception the world wide web seemed to promise an escape from corporate and governmental powers, an egalitarian free-for-all. Now? It has increasingly become a sophisticated extension of them. The hopes once nurtured by the man who invented the web have been not so much abandoned as betrayed.
>>
i certainly hope he regrets posing for that picture

Does Vint Cerf have regrets for creating TCP/IP? Does Bob Metcalfe have regrets for creating Ethernet?

"Ethernet was a mistake."
-Robert Metcalfe
>>
>>57946868
The difference is one of outlook. I doubt they spoke at length about the uplifting nature of a wire.

It's like TJ with Fidonet.
>>
>>57946894
Huh ok. So what was the alternative? Does he consider it a mistake implementation-wise, or concept-wise?
>>
>>57945546
Maybe he shouldn't have been so incredibly retarded when he invented the web, then.

If I was involved in any way, shape or form in the creation of the internet I think I would have killed myself by now.

So, great, I connected the world. But at what price? Everything is ruined now.
>>
>>57947016
The internet can be saved by limiting who can access it. Not everyone deserves it, especially cucks and subhumans.
>>
>>57946939
Ouch, I cut myself on that edge.
>>
>>57947033

go back to the /pol/ hole you crawled from foul creature

this ain't your safe space

besides subhumans don't have internet access anyway aside from indians
>>
>>57947033
It's not access that's the problem, but the hosting.

You get the audience you deserve.
>>
>>57947033
The "mobile revolution" did the exact opposite, suddenly all kinds of noggers worldwide got access (which contributed to the "refugee wave" in a huge way).
>>
>>57947099

Nah, cuck. Communism is dead and gone.

Go play pretend somewhere else. /pol/ talk outside of /pol/ should permaban niggers holy molly
>>
>>57947099
What's it like having no friends? What's it like to have never had somebody of the opposite sex want to look at you? What's it like being a bitter brainwashed stormfag spouting buzzwords? What's it like being the inverse of those shitredditsays people? The right wing equivalent of a whiny SJW.
>>
>>57947099
Reminder that /g/ is a communist board
>>
>>57947162
Actually it's a fascist board: install gentoo, or else!
>>
>>57947120
4chan is a /pol/ website

>>57947135
>Horseshoe theory
You have to go back

>>57947162
That explains why /g/ is full of low test beta cucks. (((Richard Stallman))) will pay for his crimes against whites.
>>
>>57947245
4chan is actually not a /pol/ website. Some white nationalist weirdos from stormfront spammed that board to death with the use of scripts. Faulty /r9k/ tier betas like you bought into the meme because you lack the capacity to think for yourselves. Thankfully for all your whining about white genocide you'll never produce due to your antipathy towards women. A loss for you is a gain for humanity.
>>
>>57947245
>4chan is a /pol/ website
>this is what /pol/ believes
/pol/ is like that autistic kid who thinks he's hot shit but in reality everyone hates him because he's annoying and retarded
>>
>>57947286
>never produce

Meant to say reproduce.

fucking hell m8, you're gonna kill me from laughin' this hard.

We could delete your board and hirohito will still struggle to foot the server bill

4chan is 4chan, /pol/ is nothing but noise.
>>
>>57947286
Nice lie, SJW
>>
>>57947315
I'm not a SJW. I find hysterical people on both the right and the left to be useless. I have just as much hate for tumblr as I have for /pol/. It's the political equivalent of joining a suicide cult. It means everything to you and consumes every part of your life but the rest of society responds with confusion at best and mockery and derision at worst.

Fuck off commies. If you eanna see what the web looks like without government or corporate influence, check out richard stallmans page. Capitalism has made the world a better place for everyone, including through the internet.

>Facebook
Free interner to people in 3rd world countries

>Microsoft
Founder uses the billions he made to fight malaria

>US government/twitter
Watches for islamic extremism and tracks those peoples movements to thwart terrorist attacks

The American Government and capitalism have made the internet a better and safer place
>>
>>57947377
>check out Richard Stallman's page
No cancerous meme layouts or nonfree JavaScript, I would prefer if more of the internet was like this

>Free interner to people in 3rd world countries
Only in once sense of the word, and not the one that matters. It's doing more harm than good

>Microsoft
Microsoft is cancer now, no matter what Bill Gates does.

>US government/twitter
>Watches for Islamic extremism
It's been shown ISIS members openly communicate on twitter and other platforms and the US doesn't even pick up on it. And it still doesn't justify spying on innocent people

No the internet has not been made better, it's getting exponentially worse every day
>>
The Web is just a larger version of 4chan
>>
>>57947454
Its literally free internet. They give it away for free. If you want the full package, you can pay for it. We would be so lucky to have that in the USA.

>Doeant justify spying on innocent people
What do you have to hide, mohammed?
>>
>>57947534
It's only free as gratis, not free as in libre
>>
>>57947377
>Founder uses the billions he made to fight malaria
He should use some of the billions to implement birth control there too. As it is, those whom he saves end up on rickety boats headed for Europe where they expect free gibs and everything. Thanks, Bill. Thanks for nothing.

More free than having no internet, which is the alternative. Youd rather have millions of people without access to the rest of the world than admit that your freetard principles are harmful to the world?

Ethernet is a mistake concept-wise. Look into Spanning Tree and similiar fun crutches for the reason.
>>
>>57947377
>Founder uses the billions he made to fight malaria
Stop this meme anytime. When you make ~250k or more, you save $2 on the $ given to charity in taxes.
>>
>>57947626
Actually, LESS free than no internet because then the government has a hell of a time collecting information about you, for example.
>>

K neckbeard. Obvious youve never faced poverty or you wouldnt have such a privileged opinion
>>
>>57947534
>What do you have to hide
Here in Germany I would go to prison if some of my 4chan posts were instead posted on Facebook.

Privacy in the EU(and the rest of the world) is dying very fast and everyone should be scared.
>>
>>57947730
Are you a /pol/ deplorable? You probably deserve to be in prison desu senpai
>>

>Your freedom of speech should be restricted because I disagree with you

I'm certainly not surprised that 1984 is becoming reality.
>>
>>57947719
He's done no good for africa. He sent the fund to himself.
>>
>>57947783
Your freedom of soeech should be restricted if you use it to hurt other people of different protected classes
>>
>>57947798
>speech
>(((hurt)))
>(((protected))) (((classes)))
>>
>>57947798
As I said, with people like you we will soon live in an authoritarian super-state, which monitors every little thing you.

Restricting the freedom of speech of people you disagree with will inevitably end in a tyranny.

1984 is a socialist utopia because it is the only way socialism can exist without collapsing.
>>
>>57947730
>>57947783
The problem with europe is that a lot of countries there don't have a guaranteed bill of rights like america does. So there is no legal barrier to stop the goverment from doing these things.
>>
>>57947454
>No cancerous meme layouts or nonfree JavaScript, I would prefer if more of the internet was like this

>>
>>57947286
>scripts
Yeah, see, the thing is, reCaptcha was brought in specifically to make sure scripts aren't a thing.

Look, I'm from /pol/ myself. You wouldn't know it from any of my posts in /g/ because I talk about technology in /g/ and politics in /pol/. You don't have to agree with me on either one, although I will say you have shit taste.
But whatever. That being said, don't spread lies. People don't script on /pol/, they can't, at least not effectively. The only difference between /pol/, /g/, /lgbt/, whatever from a script perspective is a single character or so in the URL. If /pol/ is scripted, all of 4chan is. Except /v/. They're just shit.

>>

The problem with sites as simple as Stalman's is that the good ones will become famous for their own merits, and as such cannot be monetized by third parties. They can be monetized on a personal level in that people who like the content can easily donate to the creator (and it wouldn't need to be a lot since static HTML and CSS is essentially free in regards to modern web hosting).

As usual the issue is business getting involved. They should have nipped that in the bud right away. You would have thought, technically being a creation of CERN, that corporations wouldn't have been allowed to function on the web for the same reason that Tim couldn't "sell" it.
