/g/, I want to install Ubuntu minimal on a T420 I got and avoid a fuck ton of stuff I won't be needing with it. Googling for info about the process, I came across:
>2. You won’t be able to create a USB startup disk with this iso file, so the only way is to burn it into a bootable CD.
>3. Make sure your PC/laptop is connected to a LAN network. Insert the CD into your CD-rom and boot up your computer from the ROM. This is what you will see. Select “Install”.
Are these things true?

Yeah
Also the first time around you need to manually start your display manager

:(
Eh, shit.
Thanks, anon.

Just install debian minimal/netinst.

Have you considered using another distro than Ubuntu ? I'm not sure it's the best for your purpose.

Was just debating Ubuntu 16.10 vs Debian 8.6. My goal is to just install i3 on a stable distro and tinker with it, until I'm confident enough I can move on to something like Arch. So with that in mind I was about to go for Ubuntu.

I really like Arch. The install process might be a bit disturbing, but if you take your time you'll learn a lot of things.

I want to become comfortable with configuring i3 before I go for installing Arch. Don't know if this makes sense.

It's not very related, actually. If you pass through the Arch install (i.e. get it boot to login) you'll be able to play with i3 as much as you want.
Still if you don't feel it, don't do it and go for debian or ubuntu.

Oh. Cool. Being too lazy to drag a LAN cable for the next room, I'll opt for 8.6 though.
Thanks for sharing, anon.
