VLC is that kind of program that you should always have in your PC, like a notepad.

History lesson.

/g/, and 4chan for that matter, is populated with weeaboos.

VLC for a long period of time was absolutely garbage when it came to subtitles, having only the very basic crappy support for them. This had made it impossible to use it for translated anime.

I don't know how well vlc works today, but back in the days it really did suck. You could not watch 1080p video without it glitching out the picture, from time to time. It would load sub cache for a long time, and video seeking was slow. The interpolation was nowhere to be found, and the colors were a bit off.

This is why people hated it, and still treats it like a joke. But like I said, I don't have any clue on how well it works today.

1. Video quality issues, especially at the beginnings of files

vlc definitely has issues that other players don't >>57925612 so why /g/ use it when they don't have to put up with it it?
>>
>>57931032
lol, its true. vlc cant handle large mkvs properly. of course retards will defend this.
>>
>>57931158
Because they get a settings menu with much more detail. Doesn't matter that 80% of it is irrelevant shit, it appears to be the more advanced player because of it, so these edgy faggots use it to appear more pr0, no matter if the most important part, playing movies has more issues.

The only thing it can do and MPC-HC not is network streaming, so that's the ONLY thing I use VLC for. I watch TV streaming channels from the tuner in my other PC.
>>
Not usable on little 4k monitors, doesn't scale properly.
>>

>>
VLC screen tears like a motherfuck with lower-bitrate anime for me.

Using MPV however there are no issues and the screen tearing is 90% reduced, there are still small sections here or there with a bit of tearing, but in VLC half the damn frame was tearing.

There is a very basic python script that allows MPC-HC to stream things, just saying.

I don't hate VLC.

The program is good at what it was designed to do: stream videos over LAN.

People who use it as a catch-all media player run into the issues already being bitched about in this thread.

It only got popular in the first place because it was the only media player around that could play partial downloads coherently during the early file sharing network days.
>>
>>57931355
Well it's anime, so at 60hz there will always be some screen tearing, but with VLC it's horrendously bad. With MPV it's barely noticeable unless you're looking for it.
>>
>>57931346
Yea, and it distorts sound like a motherfucker above 125%, while you can boost audio in MPC-HC just as much, if not more, without the distortion.

>>57931359
I bet that "very basic" script won't be able to connect with my tuner properly.

>I bet that "very basic" script won't be able to connect with my tuner properly.
well from some basic online searching it seems fairly plug and play in regards to most tuners.

It has had support since at least 2013 for TV tuners.
>>
>>57931414
Riight, all I got is "very basic" python script and basic online searching, but no name, no nothing.

You're full of shit.
>>
>>57931456
MPC-HC has fucking support TV tuners by ITSELF since 2013, if you just want to do web streaming from a URL it does that with a basic python script

fuck do you need someone to hold your hand while you piss too?
>>
>>57931473
Are you really this retarded? The tuner is in another fucking computer. "Open Device" doesn't do jack shit with hardware in a different computer! The network script will have to do everything.

Still no names mentioned, so fuck off.
>>
>>57931502
What the fuck is so hard about setting up the computer with the tuner to stream whatever content you want?

There is no reason you couldn't use literally ANY video player to watch a locally streamed video.

https://angrytechnician.wordpress.com/2010/07/23/how-to-stream-every-channel-from-freeview-onto-your-network/

Literally just need to setup your tuner to always be accessible using a direct IP. Then just leave it running 24/7, connect to it using whatever computer and whatever video player you want as long as it supports streaming from an IP address, you just type in the local address and port, and boom you're streaming TV.

I have been doing this since ~2006
>>
>>57931595
How do you switch channels, oh internet wizard since 2006...
>>
>>57931614
I use two quad tuners. 8 channels.
>>
>>57931649
>8 channels
Cute. Where do you live? North Korea? I have 119.
>>
>>57931672
And how many do you watch?

I have 8 channels at a single time. I can literally watch all 8 at once If I felt like it.

I set it up for my favorite channels, and if I want to change it out for something else I either remote into the desktop from work and change it, or I wait until I go home and change it.
>>
>>57931690
So we're still at MPC-HC can't use a remote tuner properly, and you're just beating around the bush. I can watch all 119 if I want with VLC out of the box, no python wizardry or remote desktop, or any of that shit needed.

This is what you do. If you can't win on features, you attack the concept why that feature is necessary, and still claim your software is superior, by declaring the feature it doesn't have unnecessary.
>>
>>57931735
kek, i'll take the "hassle" of being able to record and watch 8 channels at once instead of being stuck using an antiquated shit media player.

You even admit VLC is pretty garbage you only use it because nothing else lets you do the network tuner control which I doubt you even need.

But hey, it's your life buddy. I'm enjoying mine, I hope you enjoy yours.
>>
>>57931755
>lets you do the network tuner control which I doubt you even need
You just proved my point. Questioning the usefulness of the feature I need, but your shit doesn't have, so you can claim that your shit is still superior without that feature. Thanks!

Have fun with your handicapped network player.
>>

kek
>>
>>57931690
>who the fuck would ever need to switch channels

Just stop. You're giving me a migraine.
>>
>>57931813
You don't HAVE to watch all 8 at once, and how do you faggots even find more than 8 channels to watch with something decent?

I have BBC, CSPAN, NBC, FOX, Comedy central, Sci-Fi, HBO, and Food network.

If it's not on one of those channels I generally can't care enough to watch it anyway.

Sometimes if I know something specifically is coming on that I want I will make sure to change one of my less used channels for the channel that has what I want, but that's temporary.
