What do you guys think of this device? I will wait to write my personal opinion until I get some posts because I don't want to influence responses.

you can either write or not, nothing will make a difference if you are a faggot with shit ideas that can't write. There is no manual, no espiritual journey, no drugs, no machine that will change that.
This is the same as fa/g/gots complaining about a mouse sensor when there's no sensor on earth that will make them better in any game ever.

$500 for that shit?

That's pure memery if I ever saw it.

If distraction is such an issue buy an old laptop for pocket change and just use nano on the framebuffer.

Or just a pen and paper.

Or find a typewriter from somewhere. At least then you get a cool piece of mechanical engineering for your memeing.

Kind of like the idea but the implementation is shit. Make an A4 sized e-ink display and I could see it being useful for people who get distracted by computers.

I bought an ancient thinkpad when I was in uni writing my thesis, wiped the desktop enviromment, used a text editor to do my writing in, printed off the PDF articles that I needed, used alpine for email and a dumbphone for calls and texts and went to live in a holiday cabin for a while and it worked amazingly well, have never been that productive before in my life.

website is awful, it's still loading and all I see is a very outdated looking animation that completely butchers and aesthetic aspects the actual product might have.

pricing is wrong too. I like the idea but I can build this with a raspberry pi, keyboard and monitor which all together is roughly 50 or so dollars.

product should be 129 or 99 on sale and the website needs to be updated so i can actually see it if the server takes a while to load everything
>>

It's a kailh blue switch keyboard with an epaper display.
What the fuck is all that extra space for?
There's literally nothing in there, you could design this thing around a raspi zero.
Why the fuck is it $500?
Why the fuck is the screen angled so low as to give you constant neck pain?

Also, there's no connectivity at all. What happens when their company inevitably goes belly up and their dumbass web service goes down?
It'll literally brick my $500 shitwriter.

I'd agree with that for the most part, but from what I understand, a lot of writers face problems trying to write without "distraction" from most gui-based word processors. Idk, it looks like some gay ass hipster shit, but it seems to serve a legitimate function if you don't mind paying the ridiculous premium.

I really like the idea. I was thinking of commisioning Ben Heckendorn to build me something like this a few years ago. I was going to have him make it out of an old Alphasmart since the concept is there but those keyboards were shit. Then I heard about this.

500 dollars? I'll proxy you an old wapuro for 1/4 that price.

Ignoring the flat screen, I kind of like the form factor though. If it ran windows and the screen could bend upwards I'd like it.

> trying to write without "distraction" from most gui-based word processors

This is a non-problem. There are writing apps that offer a view with minimal distraction. Hell, put Word in "reader mode" with editing enabled and you have a clean full-screen page with only a tiny bar on top.

And fuck, for distraction-free writing ye olde electric typewriter is better than this device in almost every way, just OCR the pages afterwards.

(I hear it’s coming in a future update which, again, when it was touted as initial functionality is unforgivable.)

DISTRACTION FREE
>The nagging. The Freewrite was created to be a distraction-free environment. It has wifi capability so that you can sync to the cloud but, obviously, having the wifi feature on all the time drains the battery. Prudent writers would turn it off while typing their draft. Prudent writers would also get incessantly nagged via a status message about the wifi being turned off. Not so distraction-free now, is it?

> Why some Chinese millennials are taking up the hermit’s life in the mountains
>Over the past several decades, China has transformed from a largely poor and rural farming nation to a world power with massive economic heft and a rapidly growing urban middle class. While access to the global economy offers the emerging generation of young adults unprecedented access to material goods and a wide range of lifestyles, consumerism has come at a cost for some Chinese millennials who are seeking something beyond money. With a contemplative style that evokes its subject, the Beijing-based filmmaker Ellen Xu’s Summoning the Recluse introduces several young Chinese urbanites who are embarking on spiritual quests. Through a hermit’s lifestyle that draws on Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian traditions – either for a brief respite from modern life, or for the long haul – they focus on studying religion, meditation and connecting with nature, seeking meaning in what they describe as an ‘ancient way of life’.

All very true. But if OP wants something "distraction free" a Chromebook or tablet aren't that.
>>
Needs to take less space. All that's in it is a word processor. The keyboard should fold.

For 500 this needs to take way less space to move. I can buy a cheap chink kb for my smartphone for nothing. I get the no distractions/simplify your life meme but for 500 I expect more
>>
>>57933663
Just uninstall facebook shit and the like and disable internet connectivity, then install a minimalist word processor app, of which there are plenty.

If you're too weak-willed to keep yourself from opening a browser, a Freewrite or an Alphasmart won't do you any good because you'd just as easily grab your phone.

I had zero expectations and it still managed to fuck it up.

i like devices that do just one thing really good

but i like price too

i would legit buy this thing for 90-100$
other than that, it is a rip off

right now, for doing some quality typing, a just use a vim terminal on full screen
that way i can get rid of every distraction and just enjoy the work

Ok, I thought this was dumb too but you know what, the e-ink screen alone makes this a good idea. The only problem is, no vi. Can we get an e-ink vim editor please?

What the fuck. Can't delete files? Absolute trash. Nobody is going to feel comfortable being creative when bad works can't even be deleted.

>2 kilograms
>cannot erase documents
>no cursor keys to edit text
>mandatory tab on each new paragraph
>typical e-ink screen delay while typing
>500$
>noisy as fuck keyboard
>laughable firmware
>slow as fuck wifi
>mandatory cloud account on usual botnets to access your fucking files
>20$ discounted ghetto carrying bag (customization sharpie included in the price)

what worse of all this, is that youtube just started recommending me vids of professional writters doing all types of purchases to find a way to focus
on every video, there is a mac behind them

they literally don't know how to focus on a computer, to the point of typing on an ipad, or this

dumb pointless hipster garbage

overpriced meme shit for people with the attention span of 5 year olds

Given that it uploads all of your written content to their “cloud” server, I'd say it's pretty high on the botnet scale

There are plenty of degenerates here who can't write a line of code without some kind of stimulant, what impact does it have on the quality of what they produce? Nobody's a beacon of moral superiority, those who think they are are deluded.

I-I'm doing it too.
Can't be arsed to unbreak more shit manually, especially since so many sites get broken by the 3rd party script/frame block already.
