I had to use too many ball mice in my day. I remember getting my first optical mouse... holy fuck never looked back. It was so aggrevating to have the rollers gum up with shit and have overall horrible tracking. Reminds me of my dial up modems....

Given that at normal viewing distances a resolution higher that 300 dpi is the same as film emulsion, why would you want to have 1/7 pixel resoluton?
At normal viewing distances you can't see the difference between 400dpi and 1000dpi. How anyone would know that the actual resolution of their mouse was 300 or 2000 dpi is just not knowable.

Yeah because in case of mice we went forward by using higher precision and without friction sensors. On keyboards there wasn't any great innovation on quality. Even more, back in the 80s it was difficult to find bad keyboards.
