can't even order a pizza man... we losing

In some ways. It's winning in others.

But bear in mind that systemd is "free" software.

Apparently she cried after watching a Chelsea versus Liverpool match end up 1-1. She married the same day the match happened, nothing wrong with the marriage apparently.

There isnt anything to battle, and this is why this "movement" is inherently wrong, and a cancer upon the tech industry

Oh fuck yeah bud.

Turns out that talented people who create awesome tech need income. Being a involved in an open source project is neat, but there's a reason why open source hasn't taken over the world.
>>
>>57906688
Yes. """Free""" software is a meme. Everyone knows good software is made by hard working paid engineers, not overweight, sweaty NEETs in their parent's garages.

Free software overall is doing alright

Now when it comes to OS, yeah it has been losing since pretty much forever
>>
>>57906688
What battle? Free software has always been a niche movement to provide "alternatives" for users who care. In that sense, it's been a success just because that alternative still exists and is somewhat maintained. In the sense that it was supposed to replace the majority of software for the majority of users in the majority of use cases? No, it lost and never even had a chance.
>>
>>57906738
Stallman has zero problems with systemd because it's GPL software.

>>57906688
As long as people are happy to develop free software to promote freedom, then no, it's not.
>>
the battle of copying good software and reproducing it halfheartedly?

Nah, this battle's doing fine
>>

This is some of what Microsoft has done in the past 5 years (positive stuff of course, gotta shill this shit properly)

>release a new filesystem
>release a software defined storage pooling solution
>virtualize an Xbox 360 as the third VM running on the Xbox One
>HoloLens
>Surface
>emulate x86 on ARM
>set new filesystem as default on their Server OS within 5 years
>refactor a 20+ year old OS so that a minimal install is only 460mb, with more work still to be done

meanwhile..
>all the neckbeards in Linux land are still sperging out over fucking systemd

>btrfs is nearing its 10th birthday, still doesn't even have a stable RAID5/6 equivalent, tooling pales in comparison to ZFS.

>X.org is STILL alive

>FSF focusing efforts on entirely futile projects

You fuckers are getting complacent and just begging to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, don't come crying about monopoly when Microsoft is suddenly a decade ahead of Linux because you fucks can't agree on a goddamn init system.

Free software died 1.5 years ago. It was on its last leg.

>I am a pessimist by nature. Many people can only keep on fighting when they expect to win. I'm not like that, I always expect to lose. I fight anyway, and sometimes I win.
> I'm not the main leader in this particular battle. The Electronic Frontier Foundation is fighting. Public Knowledge is fighting. People need to get involved politically. At this point people should go to the EFF website and the Public Knowledge website, and continue doing so over the coming weeks to see how they can get involved in this coming campaign. It's going to take a lot of people spending probably at least twenty minutes. If you care enough about your freedom to spend twenty minutes on it, if you can tear yourself away from whatever little job it is you're doing this week, and next week, and so on. Spend a little time fighting for your freedom, and we can win.

Would things have played differently if Linus supported GPLv3 ?
>>
>>57907511
No. Linux under GPLv3 will have no effect on the Android OS.
>>
>>57906688
The compile button for unreal engine 4 on linux doesnt even work.
Inorder to update any changes to code, you have to close out and restart the whole fucking thing.

Im about to pack up and move back to windows just to be able to make shit..
Also mouse integration with qemu is complete shit, the mouse handles funny and screen grab is broken, alt f4 closes the whole window unless you select screen grab in the menu, but doing so breaks mouse wheen scrolling rendering EVERYTHING useless. I didnt survive the 90s to start going without a mouse wheel again.

The vive was promised to work with linux, and they still have nothing running on linux yet.

>Is the free software movement losing the battle?

I hope so.

Software Engineers are the only professionals I know of that systematically undercut their own.

"I get paid $X per year salary. I then go home and write software to give away which runs existing software companies out of business. I don't see any problem with this. I'm showing my passion for software!"

Good job, idiots. We only just recently surpassed the number of software and IT jobs that existed in 2001, before the dot-Bomb crash.

But hey, muh Web 2.0 social networking sites, so the world's a better place. Just ignore the stagnant pay and the fact your boss is replacing you with a 20 year old intern who can stitch together some existing libraries.
>>
>>57909974
i love mine, be it for movies or becoming CSI Cyber Naruto

the only annoying thing is booting to windows everytime
to be quite honest family, anyone that hoped vive would be useful on linux are as dumb as the idiots that thought overwatch would run on linux
>>
>>57910002
Like youre doing anything better.
>>
Look at Stallman's blog. Look at the FSF site..

They look like shit. You can do modern looking front end with free software, and they choose not to.

Everyone is going to remain using proprietary until quits representing generic 90's looking bullshit. They should get a designer on board.
>>
>>57910017
>Good job, idiots. We only just recently surpassed the number of software and IT jobs that existed in 2001, before the dot-Bomb crash.
Thats a bad thing.
You're cucking your life period if you go into CS or software "engineering" anyway.
Free software helps keep the big corporations in check.
Imagine if libre/open office didn't exist. Microsoft could get away with charging $10k for office and you would be forced to buy it.
Even if a competitor came along they would play the compatibility game and you would be forced to pay for office just because it's the most popular.
Free software is the only thing keeping computers usable in 2016 you dumb fuck.
>>57910021
