inb4 chinkpads
Some of the the modern Panasonic Toughbooks i'd say.
Expensive when new, bulky, but very versatile with unrivaled build quality.
First, you must define what the IBM Thinkpad was in it's day, and apply that logic to modern time.
From what I know, the IBM Thinkpad was developed to be a sturdy portable computing platform for work in extreme enviroments. From that, the first thing that comes to mind is the Panasonic Toughbook of today.

Correcting myself, CF-54 or CF-53.
I don't think there's an equivalent honestly. The Panasonic toughbooks being talked about ITT are too specialized. Thinkpads were durable but they were also respectable business class laptops for the average higher end consumer, toughbooks are military tier.
Just look at /tpg/, they talk about Zbooks, latitude and precission and another one. It's just at their OP.

They're cheap on ebay. You can get a fully functional CF-30 with hard drive and battery for ~150.
Panasonic Let's Note, Toughbook's little brother. They're built sturdy for business people and made in Japan. They cost like old IBM ThinkPads would if bought new back in the day, too.
