This was an interesting read. Interview with Earl Geddes, ex R&D director at Knowles, talking mostly about psychoacoustics, audio product design and how these two relate. There's a lot of loudspeaker talk but I guess because of his background at Knowles and being audio related it's best shared here.

HD650's (loved them), HD700's (fucking garbage), HD419 (pretty damn good for cheap headphones).

What are some gud noise cancelling headphones (if there are any)? I'm fine for playing games and listening to music quietly with my HD650's but they are so bad for leaking sound I usually have to put a fan on in my room or people in the other rooms of my house can hear what I'm doing. Plus sometimes it's loud in my house and it's distracting, I like to just put headphones on and listen to nothing sometimes, it's not crazy loud as I always have my door shut so are noise cancelling ones really needed?

Also how do I get ear pads for HD650's cheap? Other than doing what I usually do which is buy some HD650's swap my ear pads over then return them ;^)

I thought asking here would get me better answers.
I have several audio files with different volumes.
I use mp3gain to normalize the audio level all to 89 dB.
However it all still sound the same to me.
Any explanation?

What exactly sounds the same to you? Same songs normalized to same volume?
>>

I have no problem with the highs, then again i usually lower the mids and highs on my portable player to get more bass, overall the 7506 are the most outdoor sounding headphones for me, the sound doesnt tire me at all

After rocking M50Xs for 3 years and a half, I think my head is legit bent in.

I want new, comfortable headphones. What are some good recommendations?

I want the same or better sound for less than like 250€ but they MUST be comfortable. I'm starting to get really annoyed at these.

For reference, what I plug the M50x in right now is a Sound Blaster Z.

Those low to mid range snapheisers have the worst build quality out of anything.

Visit some local shop that sells "audiophile" stuff and compare snapheisers to anything in the same price range. They look and feel like some cheap chinese knockoffs and sit on your head like vice grips.

I was afraid that was going to be the case. They're just such a good design, sound good enough & are so fucking cheap I don't mind stuffing them into any old pocket/bag so they're always with me - which means I listen to a lot more music thanks to them & my phone, even though I own much more expensive headphones, DACs, amps, etc.

Do 558s offer any sound isolation? They seem like exactly what I'm looking for, except for being an open design.

If not, are there any closed headphones that offer similar price/performance?
>>
>>57907575
Very little in isolation. But I highly recommend them as they sound amazing. You're probably not gonna get closed ones in that price range that sound as good as these given how cheap the 558s are.

Don't worry though you're not gonna hear much of your surroundings when you're playing loud music.

I'm using a Soundblaster ZxR on my PC and I have it hooked up to a Schiit stack (uber) via optical.

ZXR Optical>Modi (Optical)>Modi>Magni>Headphones

In windows I have the default device being the Digital Audio (SPDIF) ZxR DB Pro, in the ZxR software I have the headphone option enabled with the SBX Pro studio enabled. I'm mainly use my PC for gaming, movies and music and I wanted to verify I have everything set up correctly. I recall reading somewhere that you need to use speaker option when using a dac/amp with the sound card but I think that was was 5.1 simulation which i don't care about (maybe). After 8 years of faithful service, under conditions commonly spartan and sometimes abusive, my Shure 440s have finally begun to die. Ironically, the problem seems to be in the little cables at the sides (here easily seen), because the construction appears capable of withstanding another 8 more years.

Yeah, easily. You could even completely replace the wire if you're willing to take the whole thing apart. That's the best fix and it'll cost next to nothing.

Just be careful with the driver contacts. You don't want to heat those up too much since it's easy to fry the driver that way.

You can also get some nicer pads for them, SRH840/940/1440/1540/1840 or HM5 pads should fit it just fine.

I need a dac/amp combo, mostly to get rid of pc noise.

I want to use optical output to the dac/amp, and want to run my klipsch pc speakers (they have volume control) and HD 598 CS memephones. Main goal is to get rid of the PC noise, where you can hear the processor running randomly.

Do I even need an amp? I'm not a huge audiophile obviously. Would a cheap DAC suffice? I could plug headphones into the speaker headphone plug, but would they be loud enough?

I think I might have answered my own question. The klipsch pc speakers have an amp in the sub, so if I get signal to them with the dac (FiiO D3), the speaker amp powers the headphones and I can control the volume with the speaker knob, is this correct?

Closed cans don't compete with open in that price-range [or hardly in any price-range]

Fill out a purchase advice from and specify you want closed and good isolation.

I have heard that the soundchips on phones are shit. Is that true?
Is it just a waste of time/space putting something like V0 on my iphone 4s?
>>
>>57908478
Nah It's fine. The issue is carrying around large headphones, or even smaller ones.

Earbuds/In canal are just super small and non-intrusive, which appeals to most people.

I went the route of Tascam TH02's and some HM5 pads and I've never looked back since. They're comfy and fold-able so I can just chuck them in my hoodie front pocket or even my bag.
>>
>>57909556
If you have a soldering iron and patience, yes. It's incredibly easy to replace headphone wires as long as the headphone isn't designed retardedly.

If you can't see the issue outright when you open them, check continuity with a multi-meter. If you don't have one just replace all the cabling.
>>
>>57909704
>actually for a 2000$ headset the speaker setups there sounded better
Good speakers will always sound better than good headphones. If you've got money and don't live in an apartment, speakers are always the way to go.
>>
>>57911530
Don't forget the wires get messed up when put in a pocket and the awkwardness of having to straighten it in front of others
>>
>>57911509
It depends what phone. Newer OPPO and Sony phones have pretty good DACs
Samsungs don't, and I have no idea about iPhones

Is Philips SHE3590 available? I prefer them over my black Panasonic HJE120.

would using k712's without an amp only affect the volume or does the overall sound quality suffer?
>>

They're available but I know Ergo fits are tried and tested ones, and the reviews of Philips one seem worse then the Ergo fits
Have you tried both of them? Can you tell which ones sound better?

not him, i have both

philips sound better but have shit microphonics

i prefer the panasonics

So between HJE125E-K and SHE3590 you recommend SHE3590?
I don't need microphone, so that seems like the best choice for me

I own both of them. To me I prefer the sound quality of SHE3590 over HJE120. I can upload photo but it will take me forever to do a not shitty pic.
>>
>>57912012
Not that guy either but I have both, and like my phillips more. They're so small that the tips are the only real comfort factor.
But what that guy said about microhponics is true. Its fuckin bad. I ended up soldering on some braided cable and that fixed em.

I am talking about the HJE 125 since that's what I am purchasing, are they identical to HJE 120? I mean philips are better then HJE 120 but are they better than HJE 125?

Guys!
Static what through my cord via a blanket and now I think the static damaged my motherboards audio parts.
My front jack works but it's super quiet and when I turn it up to max it is distorted and one sided.
Back port works fine but get distorted at high levels as well. I can't listen to music without it sounding like shit.
What do?!?

>linear treble that is impossible in headphones
Even more impossible with in-ears. Strong t-line modes with minimal space for damping material.
Drivers have more intense modes and break-up.
>is there a single area in which headphones outperform in-ears
User consistency.
Headphones are more independent of user's physiology.

>>57911935
>only affect the volume
K712 sensitivity is not very high. That's about it.
>>
>>57912331
>Headphones are more independent of user's physiology.
are you trying to imply ear shapes differ less than ear canals and headpgone positions on the head differ less than in-ear fits in the canal?

that is physically not possible, you realize

>>
>>57911648
Measurements go against Sony and in favor of Samsung. The Samsung flagship phones have audio performance higher than many DAPs.
>>
>>57912379
It doesn't play loudly with only a little electricity.
There aren't any suspect notions of control involved or vague concepts of quality to look for. Low noise and avoiding crackles and weird tonal shifts as you increase the signal fed into the headphone are the things that make a good headphone amp.

>>57912448
"Hard to drive" and low sensitivity aren't quite the same thing. You can have sensitive speakers/headphones that torture amplifiers into clipping.
>>
>>57912986
so I still don't understand if you're saying it will only affect volume or not?

Looking for something good in the mid range. So far, KRK KNS6400, Philips SHP9500 seem like nice choices.
>>
>>57912340
Headphone incorporate the ear canal transmission and general pinna behavior into its response. We can strip out unique features and more simply define a flat response outside of the ear for a headphone, whereas the in-ear removes the quarter-wave resonances of the canal and pinna and substitutes its own.

Headphone cavity volume makes a larger proportion of the total coupled volume and mass than with an in-ear, and most headphones keep a stable resonant frequency. Headphone response is largely independent of terminating load impedance in regards to behavior above Fs. The occluded volume with an in-ear is more heavily determined by the person, with acoustic impedance that does differ from person to person.

The difference in fundamental resonance frequency and coupled mass make in-ears subject to greater response shifts over a larger portion of the audio bandwidth
>>
>>57913055
Are they loud enough for you right now?
>>
>>57911935
as someone with a k712 and just recently got an amp/dac, there is a difference but its minimal. Or it could be that i just don't have the golden audiophile ears everyone else has
>>
>>57913012
The main purpose of getting an amplifier is to affect the volume, hence the name "amplifier".

The amp can crackle, it can hiss, it can distort in other ways. A good amp will not do this. But then, whatever headphone outs you already have might already satisfy this. It would only fix the volume problem then.

Sony MDR V6
Audio Technica Pro ATH-M40X
Brainwavz HM5

>>57914732
Other than HM5's, none of those are comfortable without changing pads.

I'd say go with M40x as they're slightly V-shaped, and once you put HM5 pads on there [~$22 USD] they're the same price as HM5's.

I assume you're wanting them for portable use since you're using them in a noisy environment, and the ability for M40x to fold is probably of use. Even without that function the M40x are still less bulky than HM5's.

The MDR's are probably too revealing for you. They're an 'acquired taste' I find. Some people love them for music, some people hate them. I think they're great field monitors, but I'd never take them for long music listening periods.

To go cheaper than that, you'd be looking at stuff like Superlux 662 EVO or Tascam TH02 with HM5 pads, but the price jump to HM5 tier stuff is worth it IMO.

Xiaomi Piston 3 - 10 bucks
Xiaomi Hybrid Dual Drivers - 20 bucks
Both seem to be legit judging by reviews and feedback, but these chink shit headphones you can never know. Should I dish out the extra for the dual drivers?
Also, any tips to ensure I don't get fakes?

HM5's
They're slightly more neutral, but they're larger and clunkier. Raw sound quality is about the same as m40x.

Why don't you want to change pads? It's incredibly easy and multiple sites ship HM5 pads internationally free.
