Considering all the adblockers that offered themselves as "free" and later used their userbase as leverage to extort advertisers for placement on a "whitelist" that circumvented the adblocker in the first place, a for-pay model actually makes sense. If the thing you're using is free, then you're the product.

If the profit model for adblock software is explicit in that the user pays for it, at least there's potential for the people behind the software to make the income they need for working on it without selling out the users. This is the same rationale for why Google, Microsoft, etc... all give away "free" services while they make a business out of advertising, whereas Apple and some other companies just make their money straight from the user, and end up eschewing ad models entirely.
