But I don't like Unity.

Dubs confirm.
xfce with gtk3 wrappers
Looks better than gnome 3 and kde.
>>57891582
this is the only correct answer, OP.

KDE isn't even that bloated, stop memeing.

What purpose does your computer serve? Why do you turn it on? Is it a Facebook machine, a multi-purpose learning/ricing Linux server, a notepad, a development machine, something else?

the one you like the most, now go install it and fuck off

keep unity. hold down windows key to see good shortcuts. turn on workspaces and use alt+w and ctrl+alt+w. get compizconfig tool and change some stuff. maybe turn on light graphics mode and definitely change the action key to alt so you can alt+right click to resize and alt+left click to move windows

>>57891577
This guy has it right. MATE is comfy. Out of the box. I like the MATE dark theme better than the stock white one though.
Xfce.
The only real choice.
>>57891938
Looks aren't everything.
I don't want my DE being a bloated piece of shit, thanks.
>>57891526
Unity Kills my shit laptop.
Right now use Linux mint.
dwm for every day use
gnome for when you need a de

>>57891608
i3 is part of the DE. And it IS your DE, if you don't use anything else.
>>57891526
Xfce is the way to go.
>>57892243
i3 is a WM moron, you don't require to have installed any DE for it to work, don't pull definitions out of your ass.
>>57891897
It's what I do in place of no gaems
>KDE
I swear half of you are blind. Cinnamon or bust
>>57892400
A DE is a wm plus the tools you need or want. If you need or want zero extra tools, then your de contains only a wm. So your wm is your de. Face it, you are just a fucking normie that uses a DE.
>>57892280
Sure if you enjoy getting random error messages out the ass and UI elements breaking every time you change something.
>>57892458
Look at you trying to re-invent the fucking wheel (objective definition).
Read some wikis before you act full of yourself, asshat.

Budgie Desktop
>>57892487
Are you using arch? No such thing happens on a mature distribution.
>>57892519
Happens all the time on Xubuntu.
>>57892523
then something went wrong or xubuntu is shit. Can't tell because I never tried it.
>>57892569
>or xubuntu is shit
you've cracked the case
>>57892511
>what is an example
>>57892508
Kid please, use some logic. The definition of a wm is simple and it can be part of a DE. If it isn't used as a part of a DE, it IS the DE. The DE is the environment, that provides a desktop like experience while working on a computer. If you pull a text out of the drawer (file structure), you need to put it on your desk, so you can read or edit it. If there is nothing more than a wm, the wm provides the desktop. So the wm is the DE.
>>57892646
apparently it's not even useful for your 30 tabs in chrome
>>57892625
But xubuntu isn't xfce. It's just one distribution that uses it.
>>57892656
Did you seriously spend time writing this fucking pile of garbage?
lxqt
>>57892656
I don't know what world you live in, but WM != DE. Take for example the default X WM, twm. Literally all it does is manage windows. For example it provides decorations for different windows and allows for overlap. That's all it fucking does. There's no fucking desktop here just a bunch of floating, decorated windows.
>>57891526
Install KDE, GNOME, and i3 and just choose which one you want to use depending on your mood.
>>57891852
is there a way to remove the icon tray on the left? it takes up so much fucking space
KDE
"Simple by default, powerful when needed"
Go gnome3 with dash to dock or go home.

It is impossible to avoid the bloat: you still have to use the bloated Xorg or Wayland anyways, so might as well embrace the bloat.
>>57894114
Fag enabler.
>>57892839
Maybe you just don't understand what you are using... By saying there is no desktop, you mean there is nothing on the desktop except any opened files. But a clean desktop is still a desktop. Don't mix up GUI paradigms and categories of tools.
