WinXP Pro Black Edition to CD. Beautiful install to an old Dell laptop I keep in the kitchen for light browsing, check email and read cook books/recipe files while cooking. That was in mid-September. 40 GB HDD plus 1.2 GB RAM & 1.8 GHz Pentium 4 CPU (not even a Core 2, let alone a Core 2 Duo).

Oh. Also connected some halfway decent desktop speakers, so I play MP3s & FLACs off a couple of 64 GB flash drives.

Pretty comfy.

Falcon4 4.61 is based on Hirens 15.2 and updated a bit. But's it's also dated unfortunately and discontinued.

That applies to most good system tools from the past. All the bootable CD project are either dead (UBCD4Win, Hirens Boot CD, Falcon4 etc.) or updating only very slowly at this point (UBCD), with most of the tools being so old that many don't even work anymore on newer systems. MHDD which used to be an essential tool for hard drive diagnostics won't even recognize the drives if AHCI mode is active (gotta switch to IDE compatibility mode), and there is no similar replacement in sight. Same goes for the majority of good old diagnostics/troubleshooting/repair software.

Can this be trusted, or is it some chink shit full of botnet and other crap? What are the "enhancements" it brings to the table as opposed to untouched XP SP3?

They wanted the CD physically attached to the printed copy that you also had to provide, I'm assuming USB sticks would cause issues with large stacks of papers.

Last week I burned a pdf and a word document to DVD. I brought it to a copy shop. Reason is that my usb sticks have ext4 partitions on them and I don't want to suffer the blank stare when they can't open that shit.

Yesterday i burned a Windows XP Pro SP 3 auto loader, Windows 98 SE and a copy of Ubuntu.

About 4 days prior to that i burned Mac OS 9, and OS 9 Lives.

My disc drives still get quite a lot of use.

I have a P4 system that has serious problems with USB booting. Shit like SuperGRUB boot from USB just fine but OS installations cannot even start the kernel.

I downloaded a small Win7 live system, wrote it on CD, booted up then installed windows from network.

What are you using to make the bootable USB stick? Try unetbootin.

As for Win7, it's easy to make a bootable USB stick as you just have to make a new partition on it in diskpart, make it active, format it, and then copy the files from the Win7 DVD onto it. Alternatively you can use Rufus.

I tried a few methods, all worked with other PCs, none with that one. It's an ancient mobo from the ages when barely a few people booted from USB and when even kool kids who had flash drives have 16-32MB ones and booting from USB mean booting up DOS to flash BIOS or setting your HDD to SATA-I. I think the problem was with the boot implementation of the BIOS.

OP here. Thanks. It's just the Palmer Method. I started practicing a month ago with a cheap fountain pen. You could do it too, anon. You can easily find a pdf around the internet.

Tried it, Windows 7 installer couldn't go past the hard disk selection phase with some dumb error IIRC.

apart from linux distros (because flashbased stuff always dies on me), I think the last think I burned to a disc was some music to play Tekken 6 on xbox360 with.

I don't remember the details, but burning the music to a cd was the only way to get it on the system

Been using their 'distro' for about a decade, probably installed 30 versions on a hundred different machines. Stripped out some retarded bullshit (Windows Messenger, etc.) adjusted some security tweaks (telnet disabled, etc.) included some tight, useful replacements (Sumatra PDF reader), full updates available so no need to connect with microsoft website (updates disabled, etc.).

Too much to describe, but in the big picture generally pretty minor, all geared toward a lean & clean install without bullshit. You have options to configure & select some of the software & changes at install, so most of the extras aren't forced on you.

Went by Zone54 for a long time, but lost the domain name a couple years ago and switched it to http://www.zone62.com/

Find the downloads and the forum buttons and explore. I've had a forum account there for five or six years, never caused me any security twitches or bad mojo. You do need to register to access the critical downloads.

As far as any interaction with any freak on the Internet, my experiences were always like with Olde Schoole Anonymous (yes, I was part of the fringe of that community in the early 1990s), not the newfaggot shitlords these days that try to pretend they are 'anonymous' because they wear a faggoty mask and shitpost on /pol/.

Anyway, if you get a genuine Black Edition download, it's about as trusted as anything you could ever hope to find. The folks behind it have cred. I tried to find anything in BE installs that made me nervous. Not saying I'm perfect and would find it 100% ... but, ten years and never ran across anything that made me stay away.
>>
>>57883892
What is the alternative? Doesnt every ready out of box distro uses ext4 on ssds?
>>
>>57883598
>being such a poorfag that he doesn't have a 4 or 8 GB flash drive laying around and formatted in FAT32 just to interface with the normie public

Basically I'm calling bullshit on you. You can get 4 and 8 GB flash drives for free if you're not a retarded basement dweller. Stores give them away, and have been for years. Fuck, I have at least 12 flash drives on the desk in front of me, 4 x 8 GB, 2 x 16 GB and the rest a mix of 32, 64 & 128. The 8 & 16 GB sticks are either FAT32 or exFAT, doing nothing more than sitting unused and waiting for a situation such as you described.

I don't even know of a place that I could bring a CD or DVD and they'd be able to read it. I get weird looks from people when I use a flash drive in front of them anymore instead of waving an iphone around in the air to transfer files by wireless magic.
