When and why did emojis become a thing?
They're annoying.

AIM and emoticons in the early 2000s

Weren't emotes a thing since the telegram?
>>57860244
but those aren't emojis

A direct and undeniable precursor though

yes. but op is not asking about direct and undeniable precursor, anon-kun
They are literally emoticons. Basically, normies use them and that triggers you.
My question is, how the hell do they market this bullshit into everything. Whenever I go into a shopping center, all I see are emoji backpacks, pillows, t-shirts and everything else under the sun. Every time I look at comments anywhere on the internet, all I see are stupid emojis. I don't even get what half of them even mean.

>text lacks shit like gesticulation and facial expressions
>so someone came up with emoticons
>tech advanced and someone made little graphics to replace emoticons
>emojis are born
It's not so difficult to understand. Texts are sometimes difficult to understand correctly, so it at least somewhat makes sense. Don't be autistic over something optional.

they were invented by the japanese. this is a weeaboo image board. therefore emojis belong on 4chan
checkmate, atheists
They're crutches for dumb people who can't express themselves properly through text
