We all knew for a while that the festering piece of shit that is Win10 is total crap but I have an actual proof... courtesy of my dad.

My dad has a small DIY CNC machine in his garage that he uses to make parts for his antique car that he's rebuilding.

Well, today he started a job to machine a large part of the engine and the job was suppose to take 7 hours. All went fine until Win10 decided to reboot near the end of it and destroy not only the expensive, large, piece of aluminum alloy but also the end mill. Reboot caused the CNC machine to slow down uncontrollably and move the head and in the process, it hit an edge of the workpiece and managed to fuck up the carbide end mill.

My dad was fucking furious. Apparently, MS tricked him into installing Win10 and he was never happy with it. Now he's asking me for advice on what to replace it with. This Win10 fuckup cost him around $1000.

Any ideas? Would Linux or a Mac with a VM work out well with Mach3?

I'm guessing he could use a VM for Mach3 (prog that drives the CNC). But I'm not sure what's available for mac and Linux.

One thing he uses is Autodesk Fusion 360 which is available for Win and Mac but not Linux.

He basically designs stuff in Fusion and then exports G-code and uses Mach3 to drive the CNC.

Anyone here know how to run a CNC on Linux/Mac?

Yes, OP's dad could have turned off automatic updates. No, OP's dad didn't turn off automatic updates. You know why? BECAUSE UNTIL WINDOWS 10 IT WAS FUCKING UNHEARD OF THAT AN OS WOULD RANDOMLY DECIDE TO TURN ITSELF OFF. It is not normal for an OS to throw away the user's progress when a task is running. But oh, sure, let's defend that feature everyone hates.

It's avoidable, but software is supposed to become better. Here it got worse. I now have one more thing to keep in mind when I use Windows. Not everyone is a sweaty neckbeard that browses r/pcmasterrace reading about all the services you should disable in Windows 10 to have a system as good as 7, some people just want to use a computer the same way they did for years and aren't exactly expecting to have to take extra steps just to not lose work.

Nigga that's a bug. Some unexpected behaviour happened and it has to restart. It may even force the restart, but it's still a contingency measure - dealing with a problem. Every single OS does this. Microsoft does this by design, a clean install of Windows 10 will force a reboot under normal circumstances when updating, not only when it encounters a bug.

That just causes people to be annoyed and eventually to ask how to turn updates off completely.

Because you normie retards are the DIRECT CAUSE of this.

Retards like yourself who see a pop up telling you there's a critical security update, and you click close and ignore it for 12+ months and then blame MS when you get hacked. MS got tired of this shit, and people will blame them either way. Now you get security updates forced on you, it works better this way for the vast majority of use cases and users. Deal with it.

If he don't want random reboots then he should not use Win10. It's not a OS suitable for proper work.

Linux would be ideal, but Mach3 only have Windows support. Running Windows 10 in a VM would have the same effect and have these stupid forced restarts.

>>57853405
I have never gotten a keylogger in my life. You can't magically install keyloggers or malware on unupdated systems, you need an interface with them to exploit vulnerabilities. My Windows XP with SP1 and hand picked critical patches was probably more secure than 99% of fully updated XP machines in 2008.

No amount of patches will ever compare to actually having good security practices. And while patching your software is one of the most important good security practices, patching Windows is nothing short of a nightmare because they can't figure out how to do it without restarting and they install malware to your system if you aren't careful about what updates you install.

Win7 was better in that you could choose fully automatic updates, or notification on updates after which you can manually pick which updates to install and when. Win10 only has an option to install everything on auto, or install everything later when you want it.
>>

Can't do that in windows 10. If you really know powershell and put all microsoft servers in the host file it might LOOK like it's disabled, but it's hardcoded into it. Can't block windows servers

You are supposed to enable it in the powershell as well and set enviromental varibles to override the normal update sequence. Of course this will only work for a week before you get another forced restart, and then all your settings will be set back to default, but you get another week.

The configurations and settings don't really do anything.

Literally didn't matter whether you were a cretin or not, only way around it was to have a hardware or software firewall or hardened settings and a crippled Windows. Windows exposed vulnerable services to the Internet and every single service in Windows was vulnerable - literal Swiss cheese security. In fact, unless you used the Opera browser you were vulnerable to getting viruses from simple images because of a vulnerability in the image rendering built into Windows that IE and other browsers such as Firefox also used. Opera used its own built in image rendering which is why it was not vulnerable.

I think Windows XP SP2 added a the Windows built in firewall that was on by default and that's where it stopped being a huge problem.

No it is not.
I have the newest update on my laptop and you can literally set your working hours yourself and it does not reboot during that timespan.
You can also disable the update task in the scheduler. It is under the folder Update Orchestrator.

That means jack shit if you don't even know what and where to look for in the first place.

These. People. Don't. Know. About. That.
>>

>These. People. Don't. Know. About. That.
That's. Exactly. Why. Windows. Does.
That shit for stupid people without them requiring to think.

It also has working hours from 8:00 to 17:00 preset and google holds kilotons of information that tell even the stupidest shit what to do. They are literally too fuckin lazy to use google or the help.

For what? The automatic reboot that hasn't happened before? Are they supposed to be clairvoyants?

Here's what should have been done:

Dedicate a computer to the CNC machine.
DO NOT connect the computer to the network unless absolutely necessary (if you do, restrict it to only what it needs to function).
Don't ever upgrade Windows.
Make sure you have a backup of the hard drive in case it fails.
>>
>>57853464
>Lies. It still works.
Probably won't much longer. They force ads on the Pro version as well. Also GPO is only fully functional in Enterprise/Education.

You dumb nigger, I'm at work right now operating a CNC mill that runs on DOS and we use Windows 7 to connect to it from the computer room.

I'm not defending Windows 10 moron. I'm just pointing out the fact the problem was not the fault of Microsoft, how hard is it to understand that not everything that goes wrong in computing is somehow the fault of Bill Gates?

These people own a CAM shop, they should be more than aware of the idea of crashes, especially when they're machining parts that are worth thousands of dollars. If you've ever done any CAM work in your life, you would know that any machine shop uses ancient, but reliable pieces of shit to feed all the G-Code into the machine.

The truth is, Windows was never built with that functionality, and it's fucking retarded to assume for a second that it's going to suddenly become stable enough for that line of work.

>>57851653

Being computer illiterate has always been an issue, most machine shops aren't retarded enough to run Windows on their mills though.
>>
>>57855380
The options are
1. Run it on an air-gapped computer that never updates.
or
2. Run it in a VM on linux. KVM will pass through anything you tell it to as long as your hardware supports it. Granted #1 makes more sense for a dedicated device such as a CNC machine.
>>
>>57851740

No one is saying that Microsoft is entirely free of blame here. It's just kind of stupid to blame Microsoft when it's well known in the industry that using modern OS's is just asking for trouble.

Essentially, you've got a company that built a really shitty hammer. And while it is certainly their fault that they built a shitty hammer, it's arguably more the fault of the person who used that shitty hammer because they didn't think about all the problems they would have with a shitty hammer.
>>

There is not a lot, specially for this kind of specific hardware requirements.

There is Linux but, to be honest all this bad fuss about Win10 killing your machine or updates doing wacky shit hasn't really materialized in bigger market for it nor more money invested on Linux Desktop.

Maybe it will change one day, but today it is what it is.

Lonix is free and it still has an irrelevant userbase after decades of its exsistence

Really makes you think

But seriously, you can make up endless bullshit reasons but linux is simply worse and less user friendly, less usable than windows

If it werent it would be the most used one because its free, but the negatives it has nullify the only positive thing it has, what is being free

I believe that the entirety of Anti-Beacon's scope of telemetry blocking is a singular option in W10P; there's quite a lot of other telemetry-blocking options it ships with.

At best this disables a few services and relies on HOSTS-file which telemetry services don't give a shit about. This is placebo.

Nope. You can at best disable and block most of it but some will get through. Stopping everything will end up breaking the whole system apart.
