I used to know of someone that owned a company that would collect people's information through their PayPal payments. So, someone would pay you and you'd be able to see their full name, obviously, and their address. On top of that, they'd use usernames so they could link you to that name and with that name they could find other sites you use because people usually keep the same username for everything and through that they can do a lot of damage. They can sell that data itself because it's valuable to advertisers, scammers, fraud, etc. They can extort you because a lot of people who use usernames do so for a reason. They can do a lot.

This other guy I knew used to collect IP addresses and link them to people's usernames. Now, this isn't THAT valuable. As in not valuable at all, actually. Any site you go to knows your IP, but linked to a username it's a big deal.

Ya'll might hate big companies, but they're safer than small ones in every aspect imaginable. Not to say they don't mess with you, they do, and in a massive way, but it's because you're so insignificant to them that they don't notice you. Small companies do and use it to their benefit.
