When will the "Linux is a terrible desktop OS" meme finally die?

When linux stop being a terrible desktop OS.

Linux user here, and I can tell you that all operating systems are shit, even Linux based operating systems, they're just less shitty than windows and mac.

There is literally no other reason to use Windows.

Coincidentally, those are three of the biggest things people use their computers for.

At work, we use a lot of Excel/Adobe. At home, I play games. If my goal was to shitpost all day, Linux would do quite well.

People who have problems with Linux or Windows are just stupid as fuck.

Honestly, half the linux /g/ posters are below average computer intelligence or just young and ignorant

They don't know how to remove bloat or disable unnecessary services and startup programs on Windows

>windows is slow and bloated

they don't know how to navigate the www or download programs without installing viruses and malware

>windows is insecure

Linux is easy, Macs are easy, Windows is easy

if you legitimately have problems using any one of these Operating Systems (assuming you're not using Gentoo or hipster shit but a real distro like ubuntu) then the problem isn't with the OS, it's with you. You are not good
>>
I like both.
But linux a little more. Once you learn the magic of the command line, windows just seems powerless.
>>
>>57846521
>They don't know how to remove bloat or disable unnecessary services and startup programs on Windows

You can disable enough services and startup programs to get bootup ram requirements down to 200MB?

>don't know how to navigate the www or download programs without installing viruses and malware

Oh you mean like the keylogger and telemetry in Windows.
>>
>>57846521
>assuming you're not using Gentoo or hipster shit but a real distro like ubuntu

Gentoo provides software packages ,as they are in SOURCE FORM, completely vanilla
Ubuntu provides buggy modified binary packages they pull from Debian
How the fuck is it more usable than the first

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>57846248
Everybody I know who uses a windows computer uses at least one of those things, so.

>>57843094
>Linux based os

i don't know, ask the over 50 percent of Linux users who use Ubuntu

it's 2016 nobody in their right mind would compare something like Gentoo that doesn't even have a graphical installer to a complete OS like Ubuntu. You don't have to be a computer scientist to use an Ubuntu computer.

>>57846622
yeah if you're running Windows XP or something. My Linux computer uses 400 mb idling, my Windows 7 computer uses about 1 gb

it's not a big deal in 2016, if you want a bare minimal install, and that's how you judge an OS, go run TempleOS, knock yourself out. Minimal doesn't really mean "good" and 1 gb doesn't really mean shit in 2016 either. almost '17

I do run TempleOS. I run it inside a VM in Linux like Terry. You see when your OS isn't loading a GB of state of the art spyware in to RAM you get to decide what goes there. I'd rather spend 1GB occasionally to communicate with God than to spend 1GB continuously to tell MS what kind of ads should be on my start menu.

o, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.

One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

>>
>>57843242
Unity is great, but since I updated to Ubuntu 16.10 I can't right click > make new file, and the file transfer notifications make annoying pop-ups. Don't know if they fixed any of this but it was annoying so I had to make workarounds. I also don't like the lack of customisation out of the box, it should come with Unity tweak tool by default or at least give better and more unified settings (though almost all distributions lack extensive settings when compared to Windows, mostly due to keeping it minimal and relying on terminal more). If people really wanted Linux to become a relevant competitor in desktop OS world they'd give you a shit ton of check boxes to tick in settings, like 80% of people are used to. I agree, terminal and shortcuts are better, but you can't expect a child or a grandpa to memorize that shit.

if you install a DE and let it be linux is no "harder" than any other operating system.

if you rice and install shit from scratch it requires more steps and reading and such. Though this isnt really 'hard' unless you're either too retarded to read or react to not instantly getting what you want with a fit of autistic rage and tears. But it does take more time and fiddling, so its either for fun, or if you have some particular needs or wants.
source: Stock DE on one of my machines, riced WM on the other.

People always love free stuff except if its fucking shit, like literal dogshit in a park

Lonix is free and it still has an irrelevant userbase after decades of its exsistence

Really makes you think

But seriously, you can make up endless bullshit reasons but linux is simply worse and less user friendly, less usable than windows

If it werent it would be the most used one because its free, but the negatives it has nullify the only positive thing it has, what is being free

Tldr linux is shit

Its not a meme its a fact
