In all honesty Ubuntu is hot shit. Besides cannonical being evil or whatever, good up to date packages, LTS is pretty stable. Unity has a lot of potential, they hold themselves back by trying to adhere to a format that works well on mobile and desktop alike.

If someone sat down and modded the launcher and application search menu a little bit it could be like a better more responsive Gnome 3.

Fair enough. Gnome 3 isn't much better than Unity though. Slower and not customizable at all unless you use many extensions which are bound to be glitchy and not updated on time. Unity is probably even more customizable than Gnome 3 if you use the compiz config tool.

Unity is definitely more light weight than KDE plasma. I wouldn't call Unity great, I think it has room for improvement though and is impressive what they've done so far.
>>
>>57831030
>Unity is definitely more light weight than KDE plasma.
I've had the opposite experience. KDE runs like butter even with all the fancy stuff enabled (blur, animations, desktop cube).
Unity lags just minimizing a window, let's not even mention the extreme lag when I open that app drawer with the blurred background...
>>
>>57831030
>>57831075

Both KDE and Unity are resource hogs.
>>
>>57830995
If the bathtub is full of water and you carefully place the toaster in making sure not to just drop it in, it doesn't matter.

Interesting. I've had some slowness on Unity but nothing too extreme. Do you think it's a driver problem? Are you running a nice machine? I also found KDE plasma to be quite bugged when I used it.

I've tried with proprietary and non-proprietary drivers. With proprietary drivers Unity runs a little bit better (still laggy) but KDE runs pretty smoothly with both.

My PC is decent. It runs Windows 10 pretty easily/fast.
>>
>>57831118

Isn't XFCE quite resource intensive these days as well?

I find MATE to be the best blend of lightweight/usefulness/aesthetics.

It feels pretty light weight. I'm sure it's a lot less resource intensive than KDE Unity Gnome3 if you turn off the compositor or all effects at least. I used it for a while after getting fed up with LXDE, I found it pretty light weight.
>>
>>57831229

Oh yea it's way more lightweight than KDE Unity or GNOME 3.

I don't like LXDE as well to be honest. Feels very underpowered.
>>
>>57831258
It was just buggy for me, that's why I left. So many times I had the thing lock up on me from using the archive manager or pcmanfm. It doesn't have proper multi monitor support. Openbox and the desktop wallpaper/icons are glitched to shit. Panel doesn't have multi monitor support. Openbox is glitchy with some applications like Chromium, it just does weird shit like open up to where it looks like it's maximized but in reality it's not, I've had a Chromium bug report opened for like 2 years on that with a video.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Did you install Fedora or are you using the live CD? For some reason Fedora works like absolute shit if you're using the live CD longer than 5 minutes or so, faster if you start installing packages. You'll get inexplicable errors like the ones you're experiencing.

>Mint is Ubuntu but not shit
If by "not shit" you mean broken and insecure. Mint is for retards who don't know how to add PPAs and can't get over Windows 7.

User error desu.

Windows 10 does not have this problem

Well, a Linux distribution is just a collection of packages on top of the Linux kernel. The way it is set up is what turns people on or off.

So, yeah, it's quite important when it comes to choice of distro if you don't want to configure it all by hand,

Linux has always been shit. People have seen the truth sometimes but they were tricked by the toxic community to persist in that shit and try one of other 987846578978975169829 available distros.

Use a retail image with clover.

Insanelymac and olarila are the best places to discuss about hackintosh.

Select Gnome with X server when logging in, default has Wayland and it still has some bugs.

The ONLY time I have had an issue with Linux was with Ubuntu Mate's shitty dual monitor support and all the dumb issues with shitty proprietary drivers on some laptop wifi cards. I have to believe these posts are made by paid shills because it is very hard for me to believe that someone is actually this fucking retarded. I mean christ, it's so fucking easy I carry around a persistent xubuntu live USB in case I'm ever forced to use a computer without linux.

Linux Mint is the PERFECT system for Linux beginner, at best in a VM.
