i have finally found the srp787 at a decent price, $250.

the only problem is that it is on ebay, and i hate buying anything on ebay under any circumstance

some of you people who buy watches on ebay tell me if this is alright or what, i literally have never bought anything on ebay

I know nothing about /wt/ thread but say I buy Timex watch is like say I love windows 10 and gaymen laptops?
>>
>>57829627
Low profile, no sharp edges, positive spring-loaded mechanism, not a friction-fit. The only other non-oem deployant I have is by clockwork synergy because I wanted to try out what is essentially a heuer rip-off and it's a stamped piece of shit. Looked for it just now and I think I just threw it away because it is such garbage. Both cost me around $30.
>>
>>57829698
I should have added that I have oem richemont deployants that are friction-fit. They're well-made but I think the RHD is every bit as good at 1/10th? the price of the richemont oems.
>>
>>57829698

the strapped for time ones at least show no signs of stamping. not sure if it's investment casting plus finishing machining or CNC plus finishing machining, but no sheet metal in sight.
>>
>>57829482
i think you meant rip off jumbo skx

>>
>>57829687

no, (current production) timex is like you have an 8 year old netbook that literally can't run windows 8

paradoxically, almost any watch from before 1972 is better. you'll figure it out eventually.
>>
What does a stamped clasp in the context of a bracelet or deployant means?
>>
>>57830196

made from cheap sheet metal and will bend until it breaks

>>57830196
Stamped clasps have the folding part made out of thin sheet metal that's stamped into shape. Milled clasps, as the name implies, are milled from a thicker piece of steel and are much sturdier and higher quality generally.
>>
>>57830239
In this case the links are made of folded sheet metal and even worse than the stamped clasp.

I spent a long time thinking about this, and I honestly think the MarineMaster 300 is a better than the entirety of Omega's range, and is on par with the Submariner.
Anyone disagree?
>>
>>57831014

well, it's definitely not a better chronograph than the speedmaster. you have unquestionably overreached with the claim that it exceeds the *entire* omega range. it's not even debatable.
>>
>>57831014
If you spent a long time thinking about this, maybe you could post some arguments that led you to this conclusion?
>>
>>57831035
I meant diver, it's 2AM..
>>57831071
The main reason why I'm in love with it is that it perfected the luxury tool watch.
The GS movement is much more refined than any of the modded ETAs that Omega uses in the seamasters, but at the same time it's rugged and you don't need to baby it despite the luxury status.
The case is finished on the same level that a luxury watch would be, but at the same time it's sturdy as fuck and is a monoblock design.
Even the hands are beveled and brushed like you would expect from a luxury dress watch, but at the same time they're wide enough to hold a substantial amount of lume.
The bezel isn't ceramic, so it's not blingy, but again, it's lacquered to a very nice level as you would expect from a luxury watch.
The crystal isn't sapphire to be shatter proof, but it's not like they used a regular mineral crystal and called it a day.
It's a double domed (with a very substantial inner dome) AR coated crystal that looks luxury but is purely tool oriented.
A lot of thought went into this watch, much more so than any diver competing with it imo.
It's a steal at 2k as well.
>>
>>57830771
Thanks, but why do a lot of eBay sellers say not to bring your watch to a watchmaker to be serviced?
>>
>>57831162

it's 2am here and i'm also drunk. there are more seiko movements in my house than movements by any other manufacturer and i'm still pretty sure you're wrong.
>>
>>57831233
How so?
>>
>>57831162

The perfected luxury-tool watch is made by Sinn. Seiko's "sturdy" is like tinfoil next to a tegimented case, and Sinn does not ship anything with mineral crystals. You have to go to Grand Seiko for anything made to the same standard.
>>
>>57831262
I like Sinn, but their watches are ugly as fuck, and in reality, you're never going to really need a tegimented case.
The MM300 on the other hand is gorgeous, while at the same time a tool watch.
>>
>>57831289

they are plain, not ugly.

i need the tegimented case at least twice weekly. it's not about impacts. those would smash the crystal or fuck up the movement. it's about changing straps all the time.
>>
>>57831301
Just how shaky are your hands?
Also drilled lugs solve that issue quite nicely.
>>

>>
>>57831348

>>
>>57831340

it has drilled lugs, mate. my hands don't shake or slip, but if you think you're not leaving marks on the underside of your lugs, then i've got to ask when's the last time you saw an optometrist.
>>
>>57831370

you can scratch a sapphire crystal, too, with a hard enough object.

>Isn't mid range usually around $3000 in the watch world ?

Yes, that watch guide is recommending absolute dogshit. Those "affordable" ETA watches they list in the mid-range are literally the worst watches you can buy they have no resale value whatsoever, you will have to spend about as much as you paid for it if it ever needs a service, it has no horological value or prestige associated with it, it will still set you back a few hundred, all while often having iffy water resistance and actual timekeeping accuracy.

I mean christ just buy a fucking Timex if you want something that looks nice and keeps (very good) time. If you want something truly luxurious and a good piece of crafstmanship, save up for a used Grand Seiko, Rolex, Tudor, etc.

And if you just want something with some horological value and a beautiful movement (while not being necessarily being very luxurious or even practical), you can pick up Waltham, Elgin, Hamilton, etc. pocket watches on ebay for a couple hundred dollars.

Either go poorfag Timex or richfag Rolex, anything in the middle is just a waste of money and you should feel bad if you ever convince someone to buy one.

>So there are no good watches around 1k-2k?

Not really. Virtually eveything in that price range is ETA based and almost 100% of them charge that much based on clever marketing, not because of appreciable differences in quality relative to the $300-500 watches. Oris is probably the genuinely nicest in that price range but even then you're just pissing money away. If you can afford something that costs $1000-2000 then you can obviously just wait longer and get something $3000+, which is when you get into actual luxury watches that hold value, have in-house movements, and have some prestige amongst watch enthusiasts and women you're trying to impress.

Look, just fucking buy it if you really, really want it and it will make you happy. They all work just fine in that price range, the same as pretty much every watch Casio and up.
>>
>>57835248
>Look, just fucking buy it if you really, really want it and it will make you happy.

My question was "what are some good watches in the price range above 500$".

You're welcome for the lesson.
>>
>>57835198
>Also Orient Mako blue or black?

Black. The nice, big, applied numerals and hour markers will really pop with a clean, contrasting white background. Plus you get a lot more versatility with the black if you put it on a matching leather strap as it can be passable in a suit or other formal occasion, while the blue can't.

Don't listen to these elitists. They hate on anyone who doesn't go into debt buying their expensive jewelry.

Most of the watches in that price range are really quality pieces, particularly in case design and finish work.

After two days of wear, I can say I'm really happy with my Borealis isofake. If for some reason you wanted an Isofrane-style rubber strap, this one is a very good one.
It's well made, comfortable and looks pretty good (if you're into that design). Would buy again.

People here have no idea about that price range. It would literally just be Tudor and Nomos on that list. Maybe a vintage Grand Seiko

>Guess what, none are significantly better than those at $500
Let's compare the SARW011 to a 500$ SARB:
-higher-beat movement
-better materials/finish (enamel)
-more/better complications (power reserve, dial date)

For only a couple 100$ more.

>pale in comparison to the ones at $3000
Completely irrelevant, and untrue.

~1000$ Seikos are often just as nice or sometimes even nicer than 3k Swiss offerings.

i i buy one seiko 5 with a 7s26, that isn't the snk809, and want to keep it for a long time, would it even be worth it? how often would i need to service it, every five years?

what i mean is, would the service costs outweigh the entry-level cost, or do these things usually last for a while? i am aware that the 7s26 has only been around for a couple decades now, but that should be enough time to provide some word of mouth advice?
>>

the minimalism autists love that shit for some reason. the best way to understand them is that they don't really like watches, and they wear these things out of spite for those of us who do.

7s26 is serviceable, but you might find that your most economical approach is to just let your watchmaker drop a fresh 7s26 movement in when the time comes.

I read that people said this in the past. She knows my passion with watches and likes the idea of having a mechanical, she seems to think shes going to wind it daily, I tend to think otherwise. She currently has an ecodrive and has been wearing it daily for years, so it's super beat up. The mineral crystal is beat to shit.

A watch under $100 isn't really worth servicing. You can just buy a new one for the price of the service.
If you're attached to it, you can also as >>57844461 said drop a new movement in.
A 7s26 will keep ticking for more than 10 years without a service. The 5 year interval makes sense if you are going to service it though. It's literally like oil changes in a car. You can miss them and it will keep running, but if you want your engine to stay healthy, just do them.

>>
>>57848967
Shipping on ebay is almost entirely up to the seller, so it varies wildly. International shipping is almost always expensive.

China, and (i think) India get government-subsidized shipping for international exports, which is why they can mail you a 99-cent watch with free shipping.

I wouldn't say $61 is shady for international shipping, but it is rather high for an item so light. I would have expected ~$20 shipping.

Actually, I just noticed some machining marks on the balance cock while I was de-fingerprinting the ratchet wheel, so replacing the surface plates with polished ones might be a cool project. I don't have the kind of skill or equipment to do engine turning, so I might look into having the bare plates machined, and then cook up a little dremel rig to guilloche them. Not gonna touch the stock plates though.

Alright, batterymonkey anon here. So there's a radio-sync clock on our desk that we're supposed to use for checking the daily/weekly rates of mechanical/quartz watches. But the structure of the mall blocks the DCF-77 signal completely so it eventually starts to drift (now it's -2s from atomic) and displays weird shit like Nov. 31. This is unacceptable when you're trying to measure daily rates.

So I started a project of building an NTP-synced clock. It involves a single PCB VT-100 compatible terminal that connects to my Linux box on my bench through serial cable on one end and my late grand peps Elektronika 408 B&W mini TV on the other (pic is not mine, but it's the exact make and color).

So the way this works is that the TV displays a text-based clock like aclock, tty-clock or clockywock like an old Unix dumb-terminal. I already did some testing with aclock through a serial cable at 9600 baud, it remains completely synced with atomic time, in fact it turns out to be closer to accurate time than XFCE's own taskbar clock.

Actually building the machine is still like a month away, but wish me luck anyway!

>>
>>57849869
For some reason radio clocks are absolutely shit at timekeeping when they can't receive a time signal for a longer period of time. Do manufacturers just put their defective quartz crystals into them, I don't know.

I though about building a DCF-77 transmitter inside the store, but I only found plans/programs that generate the time the user specifies, and not actually convert NTP. Plus it might be illegal.

Not good enough. When you have to test daily rates it's safest to use a clock that syncs with UTC at least a few times a day and its drift between syncs remains well within the limits of human perception.

And what do I display it on? Besides it would be way over budget, at that price I could just buy a small TFT screen with HDMI and be done with it.

Also I want something unique. I looked at oscilloscope clocks, but none of the circuit designs allowed for network syncing. Also an oscilloscope would be too big, and I bet their power consumption is huge.

Yes, building stuff yourself is pretty much always more expensive than when a factory does it.

Would you faggots be interested in a team speak or skype group thing were we can fling shit about watches on VOIP?
I'm also thinking of starting a watch podcast so if any anons are willing that would be pretty cool.

I never said bad. Just weird is all.

If it came to it, I'd have the BB over the pelagos simply for the crown guards if nothing else. Call me silly if needs be, just preferences. I work near loose cables and edges all day, so for me not to catch the crown on anything is nice.

what does "officially certified" mean?
>>
>>57853350
"Chronometer" is a standard for timekeeping under various circumstances.
It requires official "chronometer" certification to be able to put "chronometer" on your dial.
So placing "chronometer" AND "officially certified" is kind of redundant if you think about it.

Doesn't mean non-"chronometer" watches can't be much more accurate though.
>>
>>57853350
the accuracy was tested by a third party and found to be within their "chronometer" specifications.
most often it will be COSC doing the testing for swiss watches.

that probably is pushing it a bit then. it will definitely look like a big watch, but that's what some people are into... and it won't be as bad as the Diesel dinner plates some people wear on their wrists.
if you have more classic tastes you just shouldn't get that one.

hey guys, so i have had this watch for half a year, and it's a love-hate relationship, hate mostly because i often find it uncomfortable due to the hard metal body (coming from a gshock, had it for almost a decade)

also now in the winter, my arm doesn't sweat at all and the watch keeps on sliding up and down.

could a different armband fix the discomfort and sliding?

would it make sense to replace the current armband with one like this: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Uhrenarmband-Passend-Seiko-Citizen-Kautschuk-Schwarz-18-20-22mm-Divers-Armband-/291253590588

or maybe something nato?
